Joanna is totally unique, being the daughter of Bjork and Rickie lee Jones,
two of the most unique women in song, and its appropriate that their progeny would also be genious. It is the genious of spirit, of authenticity. Of true
emotion and that weirdness that reminds us that true artists cannot help themselves, they must sing for us, and what they sing will always be
I first listened to her while in Mexico on an MTV commercial (yes, they have MTV there). When I got back, I eventually looked her up, and not once did I think her voice to be weird. Maybe I'm tone-deaf, but it really sucks having to see so many people criticize the music that you love. I just don't get it. Do people just say "hmm, I feel like being an asshole on Youtube today and looking up music I don't enjoy"? I'm sorry, but it hurts.
She isnt in the same league, but she holds the same kind of charm that Bob Dylan has. a non perfect voice, but that is what makes her brilliant. her lyrics are abstract yet relevant, and her passion is truly beautiful. her voice is that of an innocent child, that is wise beyond years, and still holds beauty. I love you do Joanna never stop
To all Joanna fans - you need not defend Joanna. She doesn't need it. I love her just as much as the next guy, but she's not for everybody. Feel sad for people that actually get angry about her music, but don't react to them.
@McManatee I think she would want her fans to defend her - not that I necessarily would - but she has publicly reacted with exasperation at criticism many times - I think she needs the backup.
I can stand black metal vocals, death metal vocals and even Bjork. For some reason, the more I listen to her voice the more it irritates me. I should stop, but for some perverse reason I like seeing something very abhorrent from so attractive a person.
@Deliciousfarmbutter her vocals have a function, and in the beginning that function was to repel all the douchebags who could never accept the idea of someone singing in an unactractive way, like 95% of the idiots who comment on these videos. it worked, and that's why her shit isn't on ipod commercials.
@Deliciousfarmbutter what i mean is she makes music for other people who are like her; clearly you are not one of those people so go listen to something else
@gluntford She makes music for people who are like her? That's a bold statement. Oh, let me see what you've written so far: She's a genius and only intelligent people like her music. Now THAT'S a problem for statistics. Let's start with you!
You're a PhD, right? You must be, because Joanna Newsom is a genius and only geniuses like her music. How many different sciences do you have PhD's in? I'm guessing all of them. Find me 29 more people and we have ourselves a sound statistical inference.
@Deliciousfarmbutter yeah, ok, you could probably understand what i mean if you chilled the fuck out. I said a). she's intelligent (true), b). other intelligent people understand that she's intelligent (reasonable) and c). she makes music for people who are "like her" and i don't mean smart, I mean they have the same tastes, and it's pretty reasonable to say that a lot of artists do this. you said "only intelligent people like her music." in conclusion... chill the fuck out?
@Deliciousfarmbutter Seriously watching gay little Paris Hilton lapdogs argumentatively yap at each other from behind fences is what the Internet is all about. KEEP IT UP.
Joanna is a very good and unique artist. This clip doesn't do her justice. The audio is awful. Her voice is pure and subtle and has to be heard clearly. If you have a music clip and the audio is bad DON'T post it. Its a disservice to the artist.
her voice used to bother me. But once you listen to it, after a while you start to like it. Its different. Its unique. Thats what art is. I love her music!
@umdotdotdotok I agree! I use to think she sounded like a dying cat and now its the opposite. Shes an acquired taste and once your on the other side you cant get enough.
She's too far outside the conventionally accepted form of sound, therefore people without an ability to accept and appreciate differences gets frustrated...
I have to admit that her voice does get on my nerves sometimes, except for "this side of the blue", her voice is perfect in that song. But most of the time it just puts a big grin on my face, even "peach, plum pear" just because she sounds like she's having so much fun singing. Sorry you don't like it, each to their own.
@NoJamOnYourBread Who said anything about 4chan or being a dork? You seem like just the type of pretentious know-it-all that would "appreciate" this terrible music.
I'll admit that I haven't bothered ti read this entire argument (because I have better things to do), but who cares? I'm sure there are plenty of people who don't like you're favorite music artist....it's all a matter of opinion.
If you don't like it, then just go listen to something you do.
Well... The vocals are... different. Not bad but definitely different. But that harp is freakin majestic, I didn't even know I like the harp until this.
i dont know if any of you know anything about historical music but during the time period the harp was popular thats what a lot of people sang like. she's insanely talented, appreciate that and move on.
this chick plays the harp so beautifuly but I'm sorry, her voice is so fucking annoying and confusing, at some moments she sounds weirdly adorable but most of the time it's just i-wanna-sing-different-from-anybody-else noise.
why does she always make me cry? i'm usually a super-rational person, but every time i hear even a minute of joanna, i'm ready to weep like a little baby.
its probably because she has one of the worst, most grating voices in the music business today and your ears are pleading with you to free them from pain
@kaini It's probably because she makes herself cry. Advice to Ms. Newsom: write some songs that make yourself cry on stage uncontrollably. It is probably a reliable indicator of artistic success. If you can't, that's okay, you'll just be like Paul McCartney or somebody who wrote great songs young and isn't all that great anymore.
@opinioninflicting Paul McCartney isnt good anymore?? i saw him not too long ago and he was great. he has a recent song that made him almost cry it's called "here today" look it up
@kaini it's because you're a super rational person. she's a super intelligent person and when other intelligent people hear her songs, they understand why it's so great and they are moved
@kaini Well, emotions are just like love. Theres nothing wrong with them. We have it to use our brain too, in all situations. But regarding music, sometimes is better to let it flow.

And she wonders why critics call her voice childish...She sounds like a 6 year old with shit stuck in their throat on helium. Just disgusting. And I can tell you she is not a special harpist at all. Average at best.
@FlockaLorenzzz Don't get me wrong here because I am just as much of a fan of Mr. Mangum as anyone out there, but his voice is no more flattering or classically aesthetic than Ms Newsom's. Both of them tap into vocal expressions that are unattainable by normal registers. To lambast one while being a fan of the other seems counter intuitive to me considering that they are both aiming at the same target. I can understand not liking her music - I cannot understand discounting her as an artist.
@FlockaLorenzzz and you are qualified to make that judgement based upon..what? i don't see any videos of you showing newsom up. no one here gives a fuck about what you think.
I don't think she professes to be a traditional "singer", does she? I'd say it was like psych-folk or something. And there ain't no rules for that.
Sure, she doesn't sound like a typical "popular musician", but what she does comes from the heart, she means everything she says and that's a lot more than you can ask of a lot of other musicians.
You people are so gullible. This is schtick! She's playing a farcical character with relentless conviction so it doesn't look as ridiculous as it is. She is nothing more than a singing Pee Wee Herman. This is Freak Folk Music, and the audience consists largely of bearded, dirty, latter-day hippies who like to say "Oh Wow!" a lot and want to find something magical in things obscure, so they can feel like the smartest people in the room when others scratch their heads.
Wow, you sure give up easily. Have you ever given a thought to, say, looking up harp teachers in your area or finding out how much a practice harp costs? People end up in nursing homes filled with regret when most of their dreams would have been so simple to fulfill.
Thanks for the clip. It's really interesting although I really would've thought an ATP audience would be a little more respectful towards such a delicate performance. I would struggle to enjoy the show with so much chatter in the background. This is why I am so looking forward to see her at the Royal Festival Hall. Should be an excellent atmosphere for her new live show.
maybe if you weren't here watching a video of her performing, your own PERSONAL tastes in music would not be so displeased.
i PERSONALLY quite enjoy her music. i'm not saying your comment is "false". i'm just saying you look like idiotic, taking the time to watch and comment on videos of her that you clearly know you won't even enjoy, claiming you know her intentions, as well as the "factual" amount of talent she possesses.
gem; i just happened to stumble across her music, having no idea that she was at all popular. and i really liked it. i think you sound more pretentious than the people you call snobs.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I wonder if you would all be so quick to say how good her voice was if she was some unknown performer on any of the tripe talent shows ie X Factor - American Idol etc ,minus the harp? Just another case of musical snobbery me thinks.
We get it, you don't like her voice. That's fine. Maybe at one time you liked it, and since realising it was no longer for you there's been some kind of internal backlash.
Whatever the case may be, telling other people what they like just isn't cool. 'Just another case of musical snobbery me thinks'? Grow up.

What a great contrast between the words in the title.
Sawdust and Diamonds.

SHE IS SO ANNOYING. She is not great, her voice sucks and it is not pleasing to listen to at all. She tries to hard to be different

good sir BrianMalone89:
maybe if you weren't here watching a video of her performing, your own PERSONAL tastes in music would not be so displeased.
i PERSONALLY quite enjoy her music. i'm not saying your comment is "false". i'm just saying you look like idiotic, taking the time to watch and comment on videos of her that you clearly know you won't even enjoy, claiming you know her intentions, as well as the "factual" amount of talent she possesses.
[disclaimer: just my opinion; maybe i suck.]

maybe she isn't trying hard at all...maybe she is just being herself and it's too real for you to tune into...

guys, stop fighting, if you don't like her, don't watch the video.
Personally, I think she's fabulous.

Her voice is different but thank goodness for that! Also, her harp playing skills intimidate me. How do her fingers move like that? It's inhuman!

gem; i just happened to stumble across her music, having no idea that she was at all popular. and i really liked it. i think you sound more pretentious than the people you call snobs.

I wonder if you would all be so quick to say how good her voice was if she was some unknown performer on any of the tripe talent shows ie X Factor - American Idol etc ,minus the harp? Just another case of musical snobbery me thinks.
Her voice is absolutely dreadful.

We get it, you don't like her voice. That's fine. Maybe at one time you liked it, and since realising it was no longer for you there's been some kind of internal backlash.
Whatever the case may be, telling other people what they like just isn't cool. 'Just another case of musical snobbery me thinks'? Grow up.
