  • The life of Nick Ray celebrates 100 years in August.

  • Love you, Nicholas Ray! Great ending.... I had no idea you were separated from Gloria... or that you were even married. But I really liked the ending you all improvised... it was very real, and a classic piece of septieme art. I hope to see it on my local big screen... we are very lucky to have a theatre saved and dedicated to these old masterpieces.

  • I'm related to Nick Ray :) He's my Grandfather's cousin.

  • Probably one of the most underrated directors ever. You know what Godard said about the cinema, "Nicholas Ray is the Cinema".

A character in "The Dreamers" said that. Sorry for the random reference but I love Nicholas Ray and that quote made me happy even though I have not seen "The Dreamers".

  • I remember in Godard's Pierrot Le Fou Jean-Paul Belmondo says he sent the babysitter to see Johnny Guitar. "Good for her education." he says. It was on TCM a couple days later, and I watched it of course.

  • Is someone able to write the sentence at 1'13 about a "hero"? I don't understand english very well, and I need it for my study!

    Thanx very much!

  • My heroes are no more neurotic than the audience. Unless you can feel that the hero is just as tough as you are - that you would make the same mistakes that he would make, you can have no satisfaction when he does commit an heroic act.

    hope that helps.

  • @floglobe Actually, he says "fucked up" not "tough" - the word is censored in this version of the clip, which makes it sound a little like "tough." Other versions on YouTube have it uncensored... not sure where this one is sourced from.

  • No you stupid cocksucker. I'm not Blanfrack. I'm just a guy who knows what a sniveling little queer you are.

  • Nicholas Ray was a lot of things, but pretentious he was not.

YouTube can be a forum for "serious discussions," but since Blackfrack doesn't offer anything deeper than commenting on how Ray dresses and whose profile is devoted to his own self-pity, it's hard to take him seriously.

  • Actually, Nicholas Ray had this unique way of bonding with both his actors and later, his students. Many people said that despite his eccentricities, he made you feel comfortable and relaxed, and this brought out the greatest performances of actors from James Dean to Humphrey Bogart.

And if you don't think Nicholas Ray was such a unique artist, why the hell are you here?

  • The patch was just a prop, he would frequently change which eye it covered. It was just another of his ecentricites.

  • i love this guy.

  • as one of the original filmmakers, it is a very strange sensation to see the material recut. personally i'd rather have the whole picture available as it was made.

  • Now that is interesting. I always thought the end to In a Lonely Place was so unremmitting because it was so real. Now you hear what he has to say about the original ending and it all makes so much mre sense. Great director.

  • Nicholas Ray is my favorite director of all time. I can't hide my unabashed love for IN A LONELY PLACE, either. Thank you SO MUCH for uploading this.

  • @RubyTuesday717 In a Lonely Place and They Live by Night are two of the most underrated film noirs of all time.

  • @xalstarx

I second that emotion !!! Well said & well put !!!
