There were 12 episodes and a 13th script paid for. Don't remember how many aired, but all but the 13th episode of the series were written by Dennis Klein. All scripts were "told" from Family Dog's P.O.V. Here's another bit of trivia: There was one script where (originally) the FD befriends a puppy owned by a Korean family. Through the Korean Family's dining room window, the FD sees a roast on the table and freaks out. CBS censors made us change the script to a family that was green in color.

@mad4mater Actually there have been more and more cartoon shows directed towards older kids that use that phrase as well as a couple of swears. Most notably suck.

Holy shit. I saw one and a half episodes of this show once when I was a kid, but I forgot the name of it until a few years back when I heard this name, and it sounded familiar, but it wasn't until now I decided to confirm this was the show. I remember one of them (the one I only saw the last third of) had them all at the beach, and the other one was about their house burning down.

OMG. I loved Family Dog when I was little! My parents recorded most of the episodes on VHS, but then our tape died. Thankfully, we found the complete series on Laserdisc and then two VHSes. I also have the offcial plush of Family Dog and then the Super NES game for it!

This is where the show killed itself in its first five minutes. Not that the dog should never be in temporary jeopardy, but that jeopardy should be driven by the dog's self-adventurousness, not by a sense that the family doesn't care about his needs. In order for us to like the family, the family had to be shown as cherishing and amused by the dog as the audience was invited to be. Between the 1987 Amazing Stories pilot and this first, 1991 series episode something key and profound went lost.

Don't apologize, 1000 - you're right. The wife, in particular, has all the maternal instinct, at least where the dog is concerned, of Magda Goebles. As the minutes ticked by in the long-awaited first showing of the series, you wanted to strangle her, and forlornly tired to remember what it was from the Amazing Stories pilot that endeared itself. Premiered by CBS at 8pm, obviously hoping to rope the ubiquitous 'family audience,' the show needed to immediately bare its heart. Only it had none.
