  • I am from Detroit, i've seen this for myself and it just really makes me sad to see my beautiful city fall victim to such a horrible epidemic.I live in MN now and my parents still live there and looking @ what's going on i can't understand why they are still there... I just ask for everyone to pray for the city that has made so much history for America, all i want to know is WHY????

  • Detroit will rise again from the destroyed concrete buildings and all the dust and show what a strong city it is. And the car production will increase even more that it did during the last year of 2011. Good luck Detroit!

  • @petereuropa Not to be cynical and pessimistic but, no it most likely won't.

  • @petereuropa

    Cheerleader or empty words?

  • $100 dollar homes! Unbelivable! Of course the houses are a lost cause but the land is worth more. Buy up a neighborhood and it will be worth way more in a few decades, even if it ends up being farmland.

  • the recession did this to detroit? Try 40 years of horrific leadership, failed liberal policies, and indifference of city's black population.

  • thank insane living in a vacant area like that guy

  • OCP needs to take over and build robocop. That will save Detroit.

  • downtown..rush hour..ghost town..c'mon be forreal..then u stand on the blvd and 2ed and say thats where all the action is??? thats teh new center area(mini downtown) detroit may be shitty..but its never dead

  • downtown..rush hour..ghost town..c'mon be forreal

  • Such great architecture and it's just going to waste.

  • (OCGC) Outsourcing, Credit, Greed, Corruption...

  • Fifty dollars, and I thought buying a house was expensive, lawls!

  • @nhlalwenhlezondo It will be when they send you your first property tax bill, I'll promise you that. Especially once you're done refurbishing it and making it livable again.

They'll soak your $50-house-buying ass for thousands every year while the top 1% laugh at you while paying essentially nothing.

  • '

what is wrong with the city of detroit and government and UAW,,,

    how cause the detroit ruin,,,

    who did that,,,

come on time to clean up and fix the nice pretty city of detroit

  • i may not be american but i still got concern for there economy i hope they can regain control again down the track

  • Hope you all enjoy driving your Honda / Toyota / Subaru / BMW / Mercedes Benz!

  • @goofylittlecat I do! Honestly blaming Europe for the bad and corrupt politicians of Detroit who prevent any kind of reform and run the place into the ground is kind of weird.

  • Yep, this America...they can find the money to send their Armies to Iraq for no reason other than oil to kill ten of thousands of People, but they can't find the money to help their poor or fix infurstructor....America, home of the empire.

  • every city has ruff parts in disrepair And they only show bad parts on these short of video

  • can we just get rid of detroit

  • @josh666675 how about we get rid of you in detroit :-)

  • Ay, any DETROIT peoples sick of hearing only about the bad parts of Detroit??? Come to our page and check out our tribute to Detroit ... its great past and hopes for a better future. After all the Detroit Motto is "We hope for better things; it shall rise from the ashes." In 1805 Detroit burned to the ground and rebuilt to become one of the wealthiest cities in the US ... there's no doubt we can do it again. Comon people! Let us know if you like our tribute!

  • @FusionRecordsTV The best parts of the Detroit metro area are the white suburbs.

  • unscenedetroit.blogspot.com

  • i was there this summer (i live north of it) and it looks even worse. i saw several dozen homeless, a cop shootout, and my parents 50's suburb in ruins. its quite interesting to see.

  • This makes me so sad. Detroit, just like Buffalo, was a fantastic city to visit as a child, absolutely impressive architecture.

  • MY LORD. I WOULDNT STAND FOOT IN THAT STATE!!

  • @Langtry613 WHY OR WHY NOT!?. SERIOUSLY!!!!!.

  • but 50 bcks for a house wow. i would instantly buy one of those wooden huses n fix it up people ardee crazy to overlook that. california is like 1000 for a 1 bedroom a month tor rent

  • @LILT0NI0211 They are not livable..the pipes are gone, there is mold, water damage, fire damage most have been used as meth dens etc. all of this would literally kill u if u tried to live in one these homes.

  • thats bad but its like this in cities in the bay area of california too n. thos would be nice houses though if they werent all dirty.

  • I know how the longtime residents feel, but this was unavoidable. First the auto industry came, then the workers cme, then the houses were built and sold to the auto workers. Now the auto industry is gone and the workers left with it.

Not all of these houses were lost to foreclosure; back in the early 1990's there were blocks of abandoned mansions. If an old lady lives there and she dies, and there's nobody to buy the house, it's going to fall apart within five years.

  • There are companies like Apple they make BILLIONS of dollar but they manufacture in china.

Thats a good example why the jobs are gone.

I wonder why US people buy from companies like this?????????????

  • @capalonga007 I agree...I lost great jobs because of that.. My family has owned multiple businesses in Detroit for over 60 years and they DO NOT buy anything foreign and they do not sell foreign products etc. everything is American made and produced and serviced right here in our country or it does not get bought. I stopped doing business with Dell do to there foreign customer service policy.

  • that house costs 50 bucks!!!

  • @nrubmx

    It's still overpriced.

  • Pure Michigan

  • Detroit needs some tough love. The decay is merely the tip of the iceberg. The schools are ailing as well. This video almost made me cry. Part of me wants to cry, and another part of me says "time to rebuild, and make it better".

  • The train station is being remodeled.

  • what can we do i got it write a book about it, so people can read about it to !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Fifty dollars for that house?? I wouldn't pay Fifty CENTS for it!!

  • it is a good place for Fallout Movie.

  • I left Detroit over 30 years ago and it had massive areas of abandoned ruins then. Among the ruins were families paying high rents to slum landlords who refused to invest in the properties because of high crime rates. It was a tragic implosion of energy. The cycle of condemning areas and perpetuating slums in order to redirect the population has only worsened. These buildings are far too young to be in such disrepair. - A telltale sign of corruption.

  • 50 Bucks for a home !!!!!! damn if they had jobs there I would buy a whole block lmao

  • "Open your eyes"

  • what they dont tell us.

  • GOD JOB AMERICA....NOOOT!!!!!!!!!

Have you never heard about city-planning?

What are you going to do when the the oil is gone?

    Start building metros, and railways?

This would never happened in Sweden.

  • @timjbd

Was kinda hoping he'd just bulldoze everything and kick everyone out to start over. I'm kidding of course... but I just hate to see it the way it is.

  • Economy my ass. I lived in that hell hole 40 years ago and even then there were entire sections of the city abandoned and gutted. There you go...witness the legacy of liberalism, unions, and cultural vandalism by gangs. Detroit was once a proud industrious city before the welfare society showed up.

  • ITS MAINLY DETROIT EASTSIDE THEY NEED TO FIX THE GHETTO WE CANT LET KIDS TO CONTINUE TO GROW UP LIKE THIS ITS VERY UNHEALTHY TO THE MIND SUBSCRIBE TO MY YOUTUBE ORIGINAL VANDYKE BOY ENT. GHETTO FEAST PART123

  • i wanna do graffiti in detroit

  • @timjbd

It's really too bad. Many of the homes had such great architecture. Wish I had a time machine.

  • Ughhhh.... Detroit looked like this BEFORE the recession

  • Detroit makes Newark look like Miami Beach

  • Could this happen to the uk ?

  • @pmackenzie65 Anything is possible

  • @pmackenzie65 if you keep manufacturing in your own country, and you may can avert it. atleast in england you guys have less crime, so it may not be AS bad.

  • Making the USA a better place one city, street , and building at a time madinablogs . ucoz . com (without the spacing and go to blog its the last one.) Please help. Help set up a group to help Detroit. Help the people please its all I ask of anyone with a heart .We don't need your money just your advice and people to take action. !

  • @RonPaulR3v0luti0n

You should read Matt Taibbi's Rolling Stone account of when J.P. Morgan came to town.

  • @timjbd

Being Swedish I must say that the "assault" started a long time ago - when we were still predominantly socialist here and has very little to do with (neo-)liberalism. One can even go so far as to say that the "high school reform" of, IIRC, 1968, was the beginning of the end, then accelerated through the 70's and 80's. There's been something wrong with our society for a long, long time. (If I could put my finger on a single event, I'd probably make myself a fortune.)

  • Those skyscrapers are going up in China as fast as they're pulling them down in Detroit. Simple transfer of economic power.

  • This is very sad. The alarming part is that this could happen to any city in North America. Is this a foreshadowing of our future?

  • @timjbd I like stuff. I like saving money on stuff even more. The stuff I buy from overseas is always cheaper, yes I have to wait longer to get it, but it's still cheaper, and the same "crap" they sell here.

  • If the government could give a certain number of whites military protection, say 1000 white families, and seal off an area of this disaster zone just for them, those whites would have the place rebuilt and looking beautiful in under a year. Hell, even if you gave those whites the right to defend themselves, they'd be just fine.

  • @timjbd People don't want to spend an arm and a leg to buy American products these days. Fix the economy and maybe I will stop shopping in China.

  • @timjbd Could it be that Detroit had an economy based on one product, and when the foriegn markets were able to undercut them the city failed? When you have an autoworker making $70.00 an hour in total compensation that company will fail. Throw in crack cocaine, the ghetto lifestyle, entitlements which make working pointless and you have the perfect storm which is Detroit.

  • What has happened in Detroit will happen in every major city in the United States. When New York City goes bottom up it will be over. There are thousands of small towns across this country that almost ghost towns. As the collapse continues larger towns will follow. The great experiment known as the United States has failed. What is needed today is what made the United States powerful. The leadership of your intellectural superior.

  • @timjbd Now, certainly, the current economic crisis is like gasoline thrown onto an already raging fire. Further, the transfer of our nations jobs to other countries has been a knife in the heart of the USA, and I thank Bill Clinton for that (1994 NAFTA). Two agonizing terms of G.W. Bush amplified the damage. Now our nation is in serious danger of become what Detroit has been for decades. How quickly can we become a 3rd world country? We may very soon see.

  • This was all happening in Detroit and Highland Park long before the economic crisis hit. Economics had nothing to do with level of destruction.

  • What congress and all business that want to send our jobs to other counties need to see are all these video tours of not only Detroit but all other places hit hard by these economic catastrophes. Not just once but repeatedly. I know that somewhere, those people in high places must have the intelligence on what's going on nationwide. They just need to wake up and see the big picture and keep on seeing it for what it is.

  • Cool doc. Well done. Check out the video for my song, "Detroit, Detroit" by Jeremy Shere.

  • @ShereJeremy

    Thanks. Loved the song...

  • I saw detroit before the 2008crash. I am sure it didn't help any but detroit was a sh*thole long before that. And to think it was part of the model cities program.

  • The problem has been exacerbated by corrupt politicians in the city and a hopeless clinging to the "Motor City glory days." People have this grand dream of building Detroit back to its former glory, but the city is too big (geographically) and too ravaged. It needs to be downsized and find an export that is NOT tied to the health of the automotive industry.

  • I think I spotted Kurt Russell as "Snake" in "Escape from Detroit."

  • @MinmatarThrasher you are clearly misinformed...these places never would have ran in the first place without unions and the conservative government paid the bastards to move to china

  • well i'm from Poland but once while working near Lapeer we made this trip to Detroit just to take a look .obviously we didn't take a risk to visit those abandoned neighbourhoods not even much of the city itself. we just passed throuhg the suburbs, reached the downtown. but even that was very sad. burned or half-burned houses, very few cars, very few people. but watching all those videos i didn't know it was so bad. anyway it seems to me it must have been a flourishing city once...

  • @demvids hey i live in arizona to! east mesa. are "ghettos" are nothing to this, they make ours look like paradise.

  • I moved out in 1980 and I've never regreted it. It was bad then, and now its worse. For $1000.00 bucks you can buy a whole city block? Tear down the houses and plant harwood trees. If the city comes to life again in 50 years or so the trees will be worth a lot of cash ... just a thought.

  • i'm from ontario, canada and i was wondering if they got rid of that abanndoned factory on e palmer and concord street? I have been to detroit acouple of times..

  • @1988scottcarey

    Yes. Still there.

  • Ha ha British. You are making the same mistakes as Detroit. You're next!

  • @Graciethemom englands too small for whole citys to go that bad

  • fall out 4 detroit

  • i used to live in detroit but now i moved to Georgia. i moved becuase it snowed so much and it was cold and even are house sucked.

  • And its coming to a city and town near you.

  • I think they should scrap up all these abandoned houses and buildings, and let it return to nature. I think it's a futile attempt to try to restore it.

  • @Finntroll17

That is exactly what they ARE doing.

  • @grrrstick Don't forget to thank Granny Granholm as well. This is just a tragedy and people still don't get it.

  • this place is a drug dealers dream...traphouses in bulk

  • Population of the city is now less than 750,000 from a high of 1.8 million in the mid 50s. What's more, it is 95%+ black. The city is not dying, it's DEAD. Frankly, the best thing to do would be to disolve it and let the surrounding suburbs absorb the few viable portions of it. Then demolish the majority of the residential areas and let them revert back to prarie land. (Detroit was fairly unique among American cities in that most working class owned detached single family houses close to DT.)

  • why am i moving there?

  • I live in a city like detroit but with less problems. Providence ri. The former mayor, david cicilline was so corupt and a liar. We had a huge budget defict and everybody in prov knowes it's his fault, and he denies it, and now he is a representitive in us congress. Even buddy cianci was way beter than cicilline. Look it up man. Corupt cops selling weed under the leadership of the head of the city police dep. Cicilline didn't punish him. We have to stand up for our rights.

  • pretty much disney land for bums

  • THE ONLY ANSWER IS TO BUY AMERICAN PRODUCTS !! LOOK FOR MADE IN U.S.A.

  • @saintmj57 actually not nessasarily...american cars are often made in Canada...if we work together...we together can fix this city

  • @MTLbigJ im a developer living in nyc and i plan on trying to develop detroit with over 200 architects and 50 developers.

  • At :22, I lived in one of those houses and that hotel too when I was a little Kid. I am amazed that they are even still standing. Detroit's lesson is actually "Don't bite the hand that feeds you".

  • this is a people problem not a property problem .....parts of a house just don't walk away . someone takes them ..... there's a reason outhouses where built away from the main house .....YOU DON'T S**T WHERE YOU LIVE and you don't tear apart your own city and leave it in ruins

  • i went to detroit acouple of times to get oxy's in a area like this on chene road..It was fuckin hilarious, here in ontario you don't see much of this while there is bad areas, but it's acouple of buildings or houses not streets apon streets of abandoned houses..

  • imma buy those houses for $50!

  • looks like something from fallout 3

  • Dear America,

Repair your "Democracy" first. Then come invade our "Dictatorships".

  • Detroits lesson to other cities is to never put all your eggs into one economic basket. Detroit's entire economy was based on the car industry and all other business was there to cater to the people who worked for that industry. When they packed up and shipped out the city was devastated economically. The US Federal government also contributed by urging companies to decentralize from cities after WWII so that manufacturing couldn't be as easily taken out by a nuke during the Cold War.

  • This is the future for the rest of the USA too. We think we're so "First World" while millions of jobs are sent to China and the rich rule us all. That's "Third World" in my book. We're doomed.

  • this is what happens when you get rid of Robocop

  • The result of a culture that has ZERO value for education.

  • This CAN be reversed. One possible avenue is The Michigan Film Tax Credit which is BRINGING JOBS AND OPPORTUNITY here to Detroit. But Governor Snyder wants to end that.

Contact Governor Snyder and tell him to SAVE THE MICHIGAN FILM TAX CREDIT

    Governor Rick Snyder

    E-MAIL: Rick.Snyder@michigan.gov

  • @airdriver 60 days of a filming cannot save a city, the real sollution is lower corporate taxes and lower personal taxes. There is a good reason why Texas and Tennessee are taking all the jobs from the rust belt.

  • Wow!!! I knever new that a city as great as detroit was this bad. all race issues asides, we all know why this has happened... when good jobs get shipped overseas because big corps don't wanna loose that "all mighty dollar". Don't think that detroit is the target, stuff like this is happening everywhere. some places worse than others. We as americans need to put and end to this and bring our jobs back to our country again, to revive cities like this.

  • @speedy97rs Jobs weren't being shipped overseas in 1967 when this decline started so that's not what destroyed Detroit.

It's true though that this is the future of the USA if we don't stop allowing Corporations and their Politician lapdogs to walk all over us. Don't worry though, our Chinese masters will fix it all for us one day.

  • @siuwed Jobs *were* being shipped away in 1967...it's just that they weren't auto jobs...YET.

  • @siuwed, well, I beg to differ; jobs were being shipped as early as the 60's but not in droves as it is now. This downward trend has been going on for a very long time.

  • so sad

  • 50 dollars for a home on a lot.

Since you can't name one city made better by an influx of blacks, perhaps you could name a culture or race other than Black Americans that venerates pimps, whores and drug dealers as its heroes?

  • European-Americans created Detroit. When the European-Americans left becuase of black crime, Detroit became a black city. That's what it is now.

  • down with land development and urban sprawl, up with restoration!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yup, city is a fixer-upper. Definitely a fixer-upper.

  • if detroit dies america dies

  • WOW !!!!!!!! THAT NAFTA SURE HAS BEEN GOOD FOR AMERICA

  • @timjbd

yea and then do a search for poorest cities in the USA and you'll see detroit leading along with cleveland, miami, buffalo, etc via the US census Bureau. these 'cities' have huge black 'ghetto' populations, which sap much of any economical benefit.

  • Between 1969 and 1978 my dad worked at the now closed Dutch consulate in Detroit. After this post we went to Honolulu until 1988. In june of 2010 I returned to Detroit for a short visit for the first time since 1978. I did not believe my eyes: My nice childhood neighbourhood totally in disarray, totally neglected: A total Slum. I was sad and shocked. I only stayed for 4 days, then we went to Honolulu. That is a better place for a holiday, according to my wife..................

  • no californian child should have a pair of shoes until all these buildings are full and restored. no one in new york should have a new house or a sidewalk until this beautifull city gets what it needs.

  • white flight

  • I visited Detroit last year (i'm from england) just for the simple reason of going some place no tourists really go to (hired a car & drove all around Michigan) & to be honest, i found it quite a nice place! It is very desolate, but must people we came across were friendly enough & i felt safe walking into bars (even though i must have stood out a million miles away as not being local!) Its easy to be put off by horror stories but it seriously wasnt as bad as you hear it is.

  • The recession has had nothing to do with this. Train station closed in 1988? Come on. It is over and will never come back.

  • @mdz255

Mexican town? You think mexican town is nice? I dont think you know detroit

  • Detroit was dying because it was no longer a safe place to do business, work or live. And a place with out enough good schools and educators. But they can become a great Big City again if they get back to doing those things.

  • @timjbd Yeah namely the democrats that have always run detroit.

  • Looks like some neighborhoods in Chicago.

  • Detroit´s decline directly tracks white flight and the black take over of the city. Haiti was once the richest country in the Carri-bean. Now it is the poorest. Sad but not a coincidence.

  • What this video doesn't mention is that the train station is owned by a deadbeat Billionaire named Matty Maroun that would rather leave the place rotting to lower property values so he can buy up the rest of the city for pennies on the dollar - The same guy owns the only privately owned international Toll bridge on the USA border. He's abusing his real estate monopoly and suing the city to prevent a second bridge from being built so his bridge and trucking co. have no competition

  • Unbelieveable!

  • When theres no money.. People leave... Its that simple

  • @atticana It was not "the blacks." It was the undercurrent of racism. There was a 25 year cycle the moved steadily north on the west side as middle class blacks and mixed race people acquired property in older Jewish neighborhoods. After each 20 year cycle as certain blacks became more affluent they naturally sought out newer homes. This was also excellerated by the construction of teh expressways that displaced people in older neighborhoods, driving them and whites furhter north. I saw it.

  • Thanks Mr. Henry Ford. You would be proud at what you created.

  • Detroit------a conspicuous victim of corporate globalization

  • wow, look what bush and obama did to this place. what a shame.

  • @Endorush85 LMAO. It happend WAY BEFORE BUSH

  • Capitalism at its finest.

    Socialism is the solution.

  • @theindigonation Trade barriers are the solution not socialism. Stop importing cars from Mexico or whereever else and the Jobs will come back. Globalism kills prosperous nations.

  • 0:10, not a hurricane. Detroit is just another Pripyat (Chernobyl). Soviet has their bad nuclear plant policies, USA has their union-loving Democrats.

  • who is John Galt?

  • @atticana Wat is with you people always bringing up peoples color? U needs to get with the program. America is a smelting pot. Look it up if you donts know what it means.

  • tRAIL OF TEARS

  • @atticana SHE IS A REALIST.

  • Legalize weed, gambling and prostitution and that city will be booming within a year.

  • I cant believe how dead detroit is seriously i would never ever ever of thought this would of happened unreal! Man it reminds me of a comuter game i played called Half life 2

  • Search 'Chernobyl' on YouTube... then u will see a ghost town!

  • the only reason detroit is like that is the redwings and black people.

  • If Detroit wanted to pay me 1,000 dollars, I could take out all of those vacant homes with a giant gas tank and a match:)

  • I left Michigan last year and I miss it more than I ever thought I would. I live in the Southwest USA now and it's nothing like Michigan/Detroit. I grew up around this blight, driving through the city a lot because my dad used to work down there. A lot of things killed Detroit - you can't pin point it to one reason. However, the thing that surprises me the most about Southeast Michigan is how segregated it was. A lot of suburbanites turned their backs on the city and left it to rot literally.

  • Meh good riddance..American cars are rubbish.

  • @MalkavianMadness does the netherlands make anything other then child porn and drugs?

  • @timjbd Wow soooo sooo true!

  • The community DID earn it - we fought our ASSES off to keep the community going. But when government deregulation and tax breaks for moving auto plants to MEXICO came about, there was nothing left to fight WITH!!! A 300 year old city dead because it's cheaper to make AMERICAN cars in MEXICO and CHINA and OUR OWN GOVERNMENT MADE THAT NOT ONLY POSSIBLE BUT GAVE THEM INCENTIVES TO DO SO! Don't talk shit about those of us who bled for it and just ran out of blood to give

  • @Aercaer 100% right my friend..

  • @Aercaer thats because the government doesnt care about you.

  • @Aercaer I remember that, my Mom worked for GM for 28 years until they pushed her out with early retirement and half of what she was promised in benefits. It's hard to believe how prosperous and beautiful it was just 50 years ago. I wonder if Las Vegas will look like Detroit in 50 years?

  • @Halftrac look at the forbes or whatevers list of the countries with the top life satisfaction on the planet... its all the european countries on the top of the list, and guess what... they are socialistic.. so chill

  • Detroit has looked like this for many years long before the most recent recession. These homes are not newly abandoned.

  • $50? daaaaaaaaaamn

  • 21st century america looks more like berlin 1945

  • @atticana no

  • @atticana It's got nothing to do with race and everything to do with ethics and economic philosophy. Detroit was corrupted long ago by the auto unions and the heads of the auto industry who bent the government to fight their battles for them rather than competing year after year in a fair market place. I live in Atlanta where we have a huge black population. This city is doing extraordinarily well despite the down economy.

  • Michael Myers on the pillar at 1:30. Oooooooh!

  • Welcome to the future of America! I've got to head to Canada quickly before it's too late.

  • a 50$ home?

  • Detroit got ruined by Heebs in the 60's when they sold their properties to blacks, or simply abandoned them. Then came the riots, which totally messed up the city. In the 70's, factory workers were a joke for mass producing cars that 60% of them were good. I have heard horror stories on what went on in plants. Let us not forget the UAW...what a waste! How can you people feel there would be job security when you are lazy, milking the company as much as you can?

  • @Echostarwb oh bullshit. people can only be as good as their resources allow, and when greedy american industrialists fled to the third world to exploit lower currency values, and therefore cheaper labor, the people of detroit lost their jobs and the city emptied.

neocon jerks love to scapegoat american labor unions, but when american dollars are finally devalued closer to third world monies, capital will flow back into detroit and it will flourish once again.

    your comment is pure ignorance.

  • The best think for detroit would be to round up the entire infrastructure, plant a big forest and let the niggers dance

  • It is too bad how it has turned out. You can just picture those neighborhoods being filled with people at one time. Now, just a dark shadow of it's former self.

  • @timjbd teabaggers

  • Looks like scenes from a movie/film! Sad!!! Anyway cities rise and fall. But where is the new Detroit?

  • Wow Halftrac is a broken record spouting brain washing lies. Same with some people here saying "It's all obama's fault." Oh wow, I love it when people blame it on a new president, when it started quite a years ago. Haha some Americans, you.

Well, you can't help greedy capitalists you know. Capitalism is good, but when you have greedy, vicious bastards controlling it, some things up.

  • Looks like a post-apocalyptic city: Lifeless ruins, long neglected, heavily infested with bandits and feral animals, law and order are long forgotten concepts and any decent people who lived there fled long ago.
