not quite. it gives us a deeper view into Matthias's life and it helps when he recoginzes the rat who killed his family later on in the series.

Notice the roses in the intro theme and tapestry. Remember Martin the Warrior? Rose, the mouse that Martin loved, died. The Roses are there for a symbolic reason.

They scratched Mossflower and introduced a cumbersome back story. Jacques knew when it was best to keep things simple.
