HOOKAH: VAPOR OR SMOKE?

ok so just so you all know the hookah is smoke not vapor, when yo "bake" the shisha it produces a lot of smoke cause its tobacco, so whe you inhale of your hose it creates a vacum on your base making the smoke from the stem go down that trugh the water in the form of bubbles and up the hose... that means the water only works as a filter and coolant for the smoke.

hookah is still burning somewhat. because the coals are very close to the materials which does cause some charring. a hookah is somewhere in between combusting and vaporizing.

Personally, I notice that the juicier the shisha is, the larger the "clouds" are, and the drier it is, the smaller "clouds" are, so from what I can conclude, it is not a smoke, but a vapor. Even if the charcoal produces smoke, the kind I buy emits no visible smoke, why then should it become visible through the hose? So again, I feel that it is a vapor (mostly if not totally).

I smoke pipes and cigars. I just bought my first hookah and tried my favorite pipe tobacco in it. I made it into shisha using some glycerine to moisten it. It worked really well and was very nice but evidently wasn't really smoke. Had I blown that much smoke with one of my regular pipes, there would have been a considerable cloud in the room. It still smelled really nice for quite awhile after smoking though.

It's vapour because when the smoke comes down the hookah and into the water, there is a exchange of diffusion with the water and the "carbon monoxide", the carbon monoxide is given the ions of water particles from the water in the vase, so it will be: 1 oxygen, 2 hydrogen, so that makes it water....and into water vapour, water vapour is a cause of a gas into liquid OR liguid to gas (the operation of hookah smoke). The water vapour also carries with it the flavour with it. Happy smoking people!

i definitely think its vapor...cause:

1.) The "smoke" disappears almost right after you blow it out (unlike cigs)

2.) The tobacco bakes, not burns

3.) Not really tht important but shisha doesnt contain tar

It's more rather both. If you think about it, the tobacco is still being burned regardless, the smoke has to go somewhere. When you inhale it through the vase, it hits the water which causes a connection for the water to go into the smoke. Thus making the smoke have water vapors mixed in with the smoke making it feel lighter and cooler as well as easier for you to inhale.

@xPSYCHOxRAVERx i get what your saying but thats not really how it works. the smoke does not mix with the water and you don't inhale any of the water. The water just cools it down, you should research how a vaporizer works for a better understanding. when using a hookah, the shisha is being heated, never burned. If you burn the shisha in your session then your doing something wrong. in a way if you heat something with not combustion then you get vapor. thats what shisha is mostly.

All I know is that the stuff you pull from hookahs is usually cold, it's a puffy white (not grey or a dark black) and if it were burnt in any way, you'd taste it. I guess it depends on how you define smoke.

It's an interesting question, I've actually pondered on it myself.

It is indeed smoke, not vapor. Smoke is the residual matter released from the heating or burning of other matter. Vapor is the gaseous form of matter that can be reconstituted into liquid or solid form. What we inhale from our hookahs cannot be reconstituted into anything, so it is therefore smoke, whereas water, for example, can be rendered gaseous-water vapor-but can be reconstituted into water or ice.

@sclb45 Matter IS being burned, but it pyrolysis, not combustion. The particulate matter of the tobacco, honey (or molasses) and flavoring undergoes this process, which is why we get smoke, not vapor. As I said before, since the residual gas cannot be reconstituted into any singular liquid or solid, what we smoke out of our hookahs IS smoke, not vapor.

But I did realize one thing, I was sick a couple years back and that had affected my amount to take in oxygen, but after smoking hookah for what 5 months or so, I noticed how my lung capacity has expanded. -- thumbs up :D

It's a little of both. The coal directly heats it, where a vaporizer just brings hot air from a ceramic coil over the weed.

I think its got to be mostly smoke. When you exhale a vaporiser hit the cloud is no where near as dense as a hookah cloud. More often than not its nearly invisable.

@VoteNixonIn69 You're inhaling massive amounts of smoke, but if you just take a hit of shisha and blow it out, it vanishes... Like if I take my lung capacity of smoke, then I'll have a huge smoke cloud, but if I just take a hit of it, like a normal inhale then I won't even have that much of smoke volume. But again, that's just my opinion.

i see what you mean, in my opinion its smoke, doesnt water need to heated up in order to turn into vapor? every time i check my vase after a session, its always cool or at room temperature. then again, im human, i could be mistaken
