For any baseball fans out there, do the clarinets at the beginning remind anybody of the song in "The Natural" after Roy Hobbs smashes the clock at Wrigley Field?
Just like a few other songs by The National, I get the feeling like they are sung for that human that is trying to stay true to themselves while trying to experience an authentic human existence in world that at times can feel so synthetic - you just aren't sure what to think at times so we each have constructed these strangely beautiful places we go to when the cold side of the pillow starts to get warmer. You flip it, rinse and repeat. It's a scary line, and as a human you just aren't sure.
this is music at its most purposeful,a companion to emote with while reminiscing your silly crazy life..music thats there with ur experiences to enhance them&make you aware of those moments' preciousness..a good tune for me is something that will be sad with me when im down&wont try to disturb that into some glib line about how its OK..complementing all this input i get everyday from everything ...this music is deceptively life-affirming,for all its magical&somber droning...BE-fuckin-AUTIFUL!!!
Probably also my favourite National Song. It about being young and free and is based on the kids running up and down their street in Brooklyn setting off all the car alarms. No better band
Not my favorite song by The National, (Ada is since I relate to it the most), but such a fine piece. I wish the whole world listened to the national, the world would be a better place.
This group is the one thing that got my father and I to share anything.
It's probably the best The National song, and that's saying a lot. It's got a magical quality to it, it's uplifting and slightly depressing at the same time... You just feel it.
lol i was listening to this song and i saw your comment and told my bro about it and he thot it was a profound comment and he said "is she a famous comment poster"? so thats why i wrote it you weren't really supposed to understand i just was bored so yea

This reminds me of Fall in Grand Rapids...Especially long drives with cigarette smoke and green lungs.

Guy Garvey (from Elbow) introduced me and no doubt many others to this song via his BBC Radio show.
Fantastic piece of work from The National - wonderful lyrics a warm love song with a slightly melancholic after-taste.
