i met Yes in the old Pan Am buiding @ JFK back in The early 70's when they first started out Great guys. Anybody catch them at Port Chester NY back then?
@GabrielDhalaman2 You may be right about Moraz being better than Wakeman, but it's obvious that Kaye CAN play - he was classically trained, but is more of a rock player, while Moraz is a jazzer - Wakeman could use some taste on the sounds he uses, and how to play the occasional 'blue' note - all imo, of course! I'm getting a bit fed up with musical snobs saying that Kaye and White can't play when they clearly CAN. Why not just say you prefer one over the other? :)
I love Jon's story of how the band first wrote & recorded this and his playful "La La" version of the song to introduce it (BTW, he sounds amazing! & divine..I could listen to Jon singing just La La all day!)..and the crowd goes nuts! I love this song, always one of my favorites and they do a gorgeous & flawless version here!
On the other hand, after listening to this, maybe it was good Bill left, if this is how he was going to play, yuk! Ha! Bring on AW. I am a self-reflecting nano-prog-bot.
Delgift, and, i never implied White was bad, just that he brought them down from the elevated plateau they had reached. He eventually found his way and shines immensely on Awaken, but Topographic Oceans was a bit sloppy, though, the third side is inspired and wonderful. I also loved his playing on Release, Release, his most concise (Bruford-like?) performance. So, there.
Delgift, duh, I was talking about Yessongs, not the studio album. Anyone with half a brain knows Bill played on that LP. What I was saying is: Considering how incredibly free Bill and the band were on his two Yessongs cuts, we are left to only imagine how they were stretching Heart of the Sunrise live at the time. I maintain to this day that Perpetual Change and Long Distance Runaround, live, showcase YES at its all-time best, and showed where they could have gone , had Bill stayed on. Not to be
I think everyone, and I mean everyone, who has played in YES should all get together and play one last gig. I know Anderson's looking a bit grim, and Wakeman's having trouble with his liver, but just fr one night, and I'd pay all the money I own to see it.
Bruford is playing this completely different here. I just learned the exact drum part off the original studio recording. He does some of the stuff the same but he is an improvisational drummer anyway. I also like the way Alan White plays. One is not better than the other; two different styles.
agreed on the electronic drums. Too bad. Erikdavid 5000 is insane.
The best Yes performances are the two Bruford cuts from Yessongs. Listen to those and you'll hear where Yes could have gone, but NOOO, Fripp had to get on Bill's shoulder and start whispering sweet nothings. I can only barely imagine how great the other Bruford tunes were that didn't make the album. What were they doing with Heart of the Sunrise at that time, or Astral traveler? The imagination goes wild. White brought them down
@Yesshows01 I agree, but Alan White turned out to be Yes main drummer. So I would say the classic line up is White, Anderson, Wakeman, Squire, Howe, therefore, the best, or at least the most important.
Anyway I couldn`t imagine Close To The Edge recorded white Alan on drums. You know, it`s difficult to get a grip on this things. Let`s say everybody has their importance.
@lorenic95 Alan is a great drummer. Let´s say Alan is an Audi A6, but Bill is a Rolls Royce. Anyway an Audi A6 is a great car. That´s only my opinion. I love how Alan plays the drums too.
I wish I could've seen this tour. My first and only Yes show was on the Talk tour. Hootie and the Blowfish and Peter Wolf (from the J Geils Band) opened. Weird show.
No shit! Those ridiculous things ruined the ABWH album. A real shame Bill's reunion with Yes couldn't hallmark his great drumming skills. I was at this concert, and Bill was just drowned out in the mix by Alan's "real" drums. Even so, it was great to see these five members of the band together again. They're the ones who made Yes so successful; they were there at the band's peak.
Agreed! The lineup that produced Fragile and Close To The Edge was THE BEST Yes incarnation. All their fame and fortune flowed from these masterpieces. I love Alan White, but Bill Bruford had that edge to his drumming that made Yes music come alive. This lineup is what made Yes famous; so glad the five of them had a chance to play again. This is how I will always remember Yes.

@kennywowie Alan isn`t a bad drummer, anyone who says that is just crazy. But I admit that Bill has more craft and dynamics.
By the way, Heart Of The Sunrise is part of the Fragile album. Bill is the drummer on the record, not Alan.

Bruford, Wakeman, Squire, Anderson, Howe. That´s the best Yes lineup. One fo the best Rock lineups without any doubt.

I couldn't agree more. And the same goes for Rick Wakeman whose keyboards started to sound like toys from Tormato.
