  • hey mate quick question.

can i place 2x1tb hard drives in the unit it self so there are 2tb worth of storage or can the unit only handle 1tb by it self?

  • Sorry about the late reply.

Duo can handle over 20TB of storage (if drives that big were available). If you install 2 x 1TB drives, you can see it as 2TB of storage but you will have no protection against HD failure and you will need to do a reset into RAID0 mode as soon as you get it. Maybe buy an empty RND2000 and install a 2TB drive. Then add a second 2TB when price allows to backup your first disk. Then you will get 2TB of storage AND the option to protect against failure.

    Make sense?

  • can i place 2 drives into it and use them as 2 storage drives? as in... not using xraid?

  • Yes you can. In Flex-RAID mode, the Duo can be configured as RAID 0 or 1, up to two volumes (i.e. you can have two RAID 0 volumes each consisting of one disk, ala JBOD). To switch to Flex-RAID mode, you will need to factory default the box (make sure to backup your data), and during a span of 10 minutes after booting, click Setup in RAIDar to bring up the X-RAID/Flex-RAID selection box.

  • RAIDar is the free software untility that comes with all ReadyNAS.

  • thanks dude! i actually bought one the other day not knowing the full deal for what it actually is. ...

    will this work?

i have two disks that are in usb enclosure. Can i put 2 1.5 tb disks in the unit in xraid mode and have my two usb drives plugged into the readynas? ...so that the usb drives will show up on my netowkr as welll?

  • Yep, sure can. You could hang 2 USB drives off the 2 USB ports on the back and see them as more network storage. That would leave the front USB port for you to do backups to USB. Do regular backups to USB of your photos and take the drive off site for full protection.

  • No. It is a network attached storage device and media server for storing sharing and protecting your digital media and important files. Airport Express is a router, for sharing your internet connection.

Normally I would advise that you connect the Duo to one of the Ethernet ports on your router so you can share that too. However, I believe that the Airport doesn't give you any Ethernet ports to do this.......

  • Will I access the internet with this device. Will it replace my Airport Express and share internet access instead?
