  • You make me practice everyday. My girlfriend hates you. She said "Its Phil-x or me!" My response? Dont trip over my cable on the way out bitch!! Bahahahaha Thanks Phil-x!!!

  • whats the trick with making a divebomb-esque sound around the headstock? i can't figure it out :(

  • hey phil. i just want to say that your awesome, and a big inspiration for me to rock.

    thank you so much.

    enjoy your weekend

  • phil! why do you like to do this guitar stuff in your kitchen? hahahaha

  • @philx1111 i noticed you have a plate for a tremolo cavity on the back of the viper, but didnt see a trem. im just curious what you put there

  • Yo Phil, I heard you talk about your signature pickup that soon will come out (or already has?)

I was kinda amazed by your choice for an Alnico 8 magnet, and you mentioned the use of such pickups on Van Halens first record.

As a matter of fact, I have a vintage Ibanez 58 flying V copy, that has those pickups (super 70's), and I am glad that a pro like you recons the quality of that hidden jewel of a pickup:)

  • lol i always end up stripping wires with my teeth..

  • are you canadian by chance?

  • wats your favorite guitar

  • phil , sometimes tying the springs into a compressed state with thread , then snipping it after the pickup assembly is together works ..... too many lost springs previously

  • come on!! this guy sounds awesome on a fucking pocket marshall..lol phil you kick ass

  • Is he stoned in this video ? Sure seems like it....

  • Are vipers your favourite guitar? i see you using them all the time in pictures and shit, i have an LTD viper and its craaaaay-z dood

  • just like food..preparing his guitar for rock n' roll in kitchen ^^ :D

  • see thats why i like emg's the are easy installment. non of this shit like sottering, putting in springs ect

  • @RamboVan1 i get what your saying but that is the WRONG reason to like a pickup.

  • @philx1111 yeah but i enjoyed the pick up and feel in love with the sound then found out when i went to instal it was easy installation.

  • @philx1111 Indeed, it's all about the sound! Besides, I preffer the soldering and stuff. Makes it more rewarding with the hard work and whatnot. Also, P90s rule!

  • @philx1111 You Made It Look Easy!

  • @RamboVan1 emgs suck

  • @TheCollisionofworlds to you they do but i enjoy the heaviness of them

  • @RamboVan1 any pickup can sound heavy you dont need a shitty active circuit to sound heavy

  • @TheCollisionofworlds im not into the active ones

  • @RamboVan1 Wheres the fun in that... I completely rewired my strat last summer, The satisfaction knowing I made it sound bitching again. Ooo Yeahhh! Haha.

  • @BigBadBlues85 im realy lazy and always on the run with my band so im always tryin new stuff in a fast amount of time. plus i like the heavy ness

  • @RamboVan1 Ahhh I see. I didnt realise you played with Paul McCartney & Wings. Still though, Lazys no excuse for not being able to fix the shit out of your guitar.

  • @BigBadBlues85 not to be mean or anything is that sarcasm. just asking but... you'll be surprised how time i spend on my guitar the pickups for me are the most time consuming for me and i just want to get it over with.

  • @RamboVan1 No buddy, you said your on the run with your band. Bannnddd On The Runnn... Never heard of it??

  • @BigBadBlues85 i heard if it sorry didnt get the joke at first. made a mistake

  • @RamboVan1 soldering isnt a big thing... :D

  • @kemotox oh realy. i never soldered before. it looks time consuming and risking so.

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one who has a hard time with those damn springs.

  • What does Phil say in the beginning?! :D I can't ever tell?! D':

  • a job i wasn't looking forward to, but you made it look easy! just wish i hadn't ripped the pots out without labeling them....fun times ahead. also you are fooking amazing..its depressing watching you rip those vintages and vipers new assholes. do you modify the vintages much or are they straight from the factory?

  • @mrphilcollins i NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER mess with a vintage guitar. a) if it's not doing what you want, trade it for something that does b) any "messing with" will decrease its' value on the vintage guitar market.

  • @philx1111 unrelated subject....what advice would you give to a guitar player who wants to go down a similar route(session work etc.) to you. did you go to a guitar school or did you work up from playing with bands until you made a name for yourself?

  • @philx1111 Re issues dont count though right? or does the 100 yr old wood make it "vintage'?

  • first i was like wow he's calm and than PHIL X i was like :D

  • Hey Phil you should come and play open mic night in my town, please. It is in our ice cream parlor. i will pay for your ice cream.

  • can i have your autograph man? i think yer pretty chill n all

  • who is the chick who is taping you?

  • I'm using 2 screws cause I don't give a shit haha

  • cool cat

  • Hey phil, how does the p94 compare with your new arcane PX90's?? cheers :D

  • hey phil, any soldering tips my friend/? i have that same iron also

  • Comment removed

  • Phil X! What pickups did you use to record that song in the backround with the sick unaccompanied guitar solo intro.

  • @PGROSYE02 that's a Gibson P94 in one of my LTD Vipers straight into my 1960's Gibson Atlas bass head into a Marshall 4x12.

  • @philx1111 sorry, just learned something new... what is the advantage of playing into a bass head?

  • Hey Phil.............try using a product called "Flux" on the wires before soldering.

    It improves electrical contact.

My Dad is old school and taught me that..............it works.

  • PHIL X the only man in the world who can make a pocket marshall sound awesome!

  • Cracked Gibby necks are routine. Anybody worth their salt has done a dozen of them.

  • Phil, I got a tech question for ya... WTF you doing with those vice grips?

  • @guitartec what vice grips?

  • @philx1111 Also interested in Trem cavity dude. :)

  • @guitartec There's a pair of vice grips sitting on your kitchen counter in the vid. Thought you might be using it as a capo.

  • Phil you're so badass man! Keep rockin

  • Hi Phil. Saw a few Bon Jovi videos with you in the lead guitar. You were fantastic. I will pay to see Bon Jovi just to watch you play. Great job man! How did it feel working with those guys? I know you used your guitars, did you use Richie's amps and effects? Let me know. You Rock!

  • I love my pocket Marshall to!

  • 1:08 - the secret to Phil X's infinite energy. He's powered by Energizer!

  • Hey Phil, i want to make my Gibson SG Standard look worn and theres a dude on Kijiji that claims he did work on one of your guitars and his name is Rob McWilliam.. is this true and if so, would you recommend him?

  • P94s are great pickups. I put a set in an Epi Les Paul Studio sounded great big and ballsy distorted and nice chimey cleans kinda like a bigger sounding tele.

  • hey phil are the p94s hum cancelling?

  • @MrStratman2011

    no, far from it:)

  • Hey Phil, who was taping this video?

  • This was really helpful thanks Phil. By the way congratulations on landing the Bon Jovi gig!!!

  • Cool video Phil. I don't know if I could even treat a beater guitar that bad working on it.LOL . I work on my own stuff and guitars for others as well as wind my own pickups and it makes me happy to see another guitar player who is not afraid to get in there and mod or fix things on their own. I'll change pickups 4 or 5 times in a week just to find the right tone sometimes. Love your demo vids and your playing is just amazing Bro !!

    Mike

  • Phil, i need help. Its Parker from Facebook. I just recently ripped the neck pick up out of the epi goldtop cause i wanted to. Just alone the bridge p90 sounds awesome now. But a week later, something happened and its not grounded. I checked all the wires and they are making contact. Do I need to take it to the guitar tech to have him fix it or is it something you can help me with?

  • Hey Phil what type of yamaha do you play?

  • we're cookin' rock 'n fuckin' roll in the kitchen today!

  • I baught vintage solder

  • hey phil what does your shirt say?

  • wow. youre a great person phil x. keep rockin! cause you really kickass !

  • Dude, nice pocket Marshal, i wanna one. But here, in Brazil, it's too expencive. :\ Nice tone, by the way. Do you Prefer p96? Or p90?

  • Hey Phil, i was wondering who did the work on the viper neck? i found a 68 Gibson Les Paul Custom in the trash(yeah i know i was shocked when i saw a Gibson case in the dumpster) on the way home from school but it had a cracked neck. I dont have a problem shipping to get it fix i just was wondering if you knew anyone who did quality work on neck repairs?

    Thanks, Robert

  • @guitar97dude hey man, the guy i use is always backed up. you should try to find a guitar builder/luthier in your hood. are you in the US/Canada or somewhere else?

  • @philx1111 Yeah, usually the best thing you can do is find a local person, probably someone who owns a store and does repairs and stuff and make friends with them, if you do that, your prettymuch golden.

  • @guitar97dude wow a 68!!!!!! lucky you

  • @guitar97dude ....Kenny Marshall in Virginia Beach, VA is a genius at guitar repairs. He works out of a shop called AL&M. He has clients all over that bring their guitars with them when they are here on vacation because he's so good. Cheers.

  • Very cool, i never knew how easy it is too switch till now. Im definitely gonna swap pickups in my Arctic Frost Ibanez this weekend. The Ibz 7 and Ibz 8 pickups suck lol

  • Philx you are ten time a more talented song writer than bon jovi

  • i put a P94 in today, the red is hot a fact i failed to note...seems like most pickups you have white and black and ground the rest but live it to Gibson to make shit interesting, but i got it wired up right and i swear i love the thing P94 rocks balls!

  • hey Phil, do the p-94's sound close to the p-90's , cause i'm looking for pickups to stick in my 81 SG and i really want that p90 type tone.

    thanks,

    Pascal.

  • @FahQposeurfag that SG is a perfect candidate for P94's. just don't throw out (or give away or sell) the originals.

  • @philx1111 ahaha yeah, i knew you would say that about the originals, but the main reason i'm switching is cuz i got that SG used and the jackass who had it before me had swapped em for Jackson p/u's. thanks for your help

  • Hey Phil, love you playing and videos!! A small tip... Blowing on solder to cool it down can cause cold solder joints. Just an FYI. I know you tour a lot and probably want your guitars sounding their best. Thanks again for all the cool VIDEOS!! They Make my week!

  • Have you looked at the Epiphone Nick Valensi Riviera? Comes installed with 2 P-94s, sounds amazing!

  • The kitchen, the best workshop XD

  • Hey Phil I have a 2010 Gibson Les Paul Standard Traditional (non-chambered) and I can't really think of anything else I could do to it to customize it and fix it up. Any suggestions??? Thanks bro u rock!!

  • @gibsonguylp thanks, man. you don't customize/mod a guitar just to do it. you change pickups if you're not happy with the sound, blowtorch the finish off (or get it repainted) if you don't like the color or get new frets installed if you're not getting enough grab on the neck. stuff like that. but if it ain't broke, don't fix it. if the mods are irreversible and you're unhappy with the results, you'll kick yourself in the ass.

  • Any tips Phil on how you can pick so many notes on fast runs as opposed just hammering and pulling off,I'm practicing a lot of the time on that technique but it's difficult as hell and Sloooooowly coming along. It might be a difficult question to answer but any help would be appreciated.

  • @SRV1DOORS1HENDRIX1 it does take a lot of work but the secret is don't even play anything fast for a few weeks. play all the licks you WANT to play fast super slow. make sure your alternate picking is bang on and you're making no mistakes. this will develop your finger muscle memory for when you start speeding the licks up. you'll notice a huge difference after the 3 or so weeks and if you don't, you were cheating and it's all on you.

  • @philx1111 Thank's man I appreciate the reply.I don't plan on cheating,I'll write back in a month after practicing your advice and let you know how It's helping.

  • phil you really fast learning songs.. haha learned all bon jovi songs for a short time.. even though you dont like bon jovi at richi's flying V in fretted americana :P

  • @kochiyose12 man... i never said i didn't like bon jovi. i grew up on 'livin' on a prayer' and me and an acoustic guitar on 'wanted dead or alive' was a deal closer in getting laid. slippery when wet is still one of the best rock records ever.

  • @philx1111 im not taking that, anyway bro, phil keep on playing such good old songs, because of you i learned zepplin, hendrix, the funk49 ect.. songs, and you rock man, im 20 and hoping to play vintage guitar cause i have the buck its just its hard to find good guitars in my country. thanks phil :)

  • @philx1111 this may sound dumb but how do you remove the tone pot im wanting to mod my viper like urs with just the bridge pickup and idk how to remove the pots and switch

  • @Z0S0The0utrider69 aww man, i learned that shit when i was a kid. now i'm lazy. i just rip shit out and if it doesn't work i have to figure out why and fix it. if you look really close, you can see what wires to cut or desolder.

  • @philx1111 thank u almighty Phil X!!!

  • NOT TUBE AMP HOW DARE YOU.!!!!!!

    jk.

  • hey phil, what is your favorite bridge humbucker for a guitar like your ltd viper? you rock man!

  • @shredthegnar01 i like classic PAF type pickups. the last humbucker i had in a viper was a seymour duncan

'59. it's my fault everyone says i use the SD alnico pro II as i said it was for a long time but when i took it out, it said '59 on the back. i think 1 week i tried out 3 or 4 pickups and forgot which one i liked the most. haha.

  • @philx1111 thank you for the input man!

  • @philx1111 hey i got a guitar with p-90 i want to try humbucker and check the different tones, are the hole to small for humbucker to be installed? what can i do?

  • @kobrw it depends on the guitar. i was curious like you about an old jr reissue i had. i could put the humbucker in the p90 hole without any mods but if you don't screw the pickup right into the body with springs or surgical tubing, you have to install the hummy with a ringmount which will leave 4 little visible holes if/when you put the P90 back

  • @philx1111 thanks!

  • I will probably do this with my tokai :)

have you ever tried kent armstrong pickups?

  • ps. you eat lunch at two?

pss. have you ever tried a pignose amp?

    THEY KICK ASS!!!

  • What string gauge do you use?

  • I love my pocket marshall too! i make some records and put in my channel, check it out! and I'm following you on twitter.. you're one of the best players i've ever heard man.. keep rollin'!

  • Wow Phil, I leave the strings on to change pickups too...except on strats. Wait I did leave them on one time on a 21 fret strat. Just pushed the whammy bar down to give a little more room to get the scratch plate out. Looking forward to the new Drills.

  • How much you will practice each day?

  • As you seem to can play extremely fast licks on any guitar I've seen you play, I am very interested to know

1, what your preferred string action height is on your personal guitars?

2, at Fretted Americana do all those guitars have descent low action or what?

I know the common answer is its all in the hands but, all hands need a little help to shine and a nice action is always a wanted thing!

  • @angusgrandison 1. medium. HATE low action for 2 reasons. i) i like the guitar to fight back a little. if it's too easy to play, i'm not feeling the instrument. ii) if the action is too low it's cutting off the room the strings need to vibrate to get a full tone. 2. all the guits at FA have medium action as well. i used to walk in and every guit david handed me i handed back and told him to raise the action. they know better now. btw... hands don't need low action. they need practice.

  • @philx1111 wow the action talk.. that was really true. :o haha

  • Man,i love that sound

Do you think that the p94 works well with distortion?

  • @meentoso wasn't that distorted?

  • Hey Phil, nice video! It's cool to see a guitarrist that really knows his intrument completely.

About the buzzing, you could reduce it by soldering the metalic box that covers the pickup to ground. It'll work kinda like the bridge cover in Telecasters.

Oh, and I was wondering, have you ever tried making your own Stompboxes? 'Cus I bet you'd love to mess around with that stuff :3

If you have any interest in that, I'd love to point you some sites and even some cool projects to mess with.

    ROCK ON!

  • Springs are a pain the butt. Oh they also make the pickup wobble at times. Man, get surgical tubing instead. Cut it to size and you can install a pickup in a snap. It also keeps the pickups from moving around. looking forward to seeing your band live. If you ever find your way out here in southern Alabama, you need to book a show at The Hangout on the beach in Gulf Shores. The Shrimp & BBQ is on me.

  • cute dog philly !

  • Definately considering using a humbucker sized P90 after listening to Phil X's tone.

  • Even in a kitchen with a tiny assed Marshall he sounds better than me.

  • your crazy playing and singing reminds me of Bumblefoot. You guys should do like a tour together lol.

  • I cant get over how awesome you made that little marshall sound. I thought you said you liked the evil robot better than the tonemaster eh!?!?

  • Only a true madman would solder on a sweet counter top like that.. You live dangerously Mr. X.. LOL Love you dude...

  • @2000guitarman LP type. am i missing the question? check out evertune dot com

  • @2000guitarman 1. Evertune has 3 styles, LP type, tele and strat. 2. 3G. waiting for 5G. 3. i don't think i have a singular favorite guitar or amp as i love many but for all intense purposes, i LOVE the '58 ES335 at Fretted Americana and even though it's not mine, i'm calling it out. amp wise... my 60's Gibson Atlas bass head is magical and my fave combo is still my 60's Tonemaster.

  • @2000guitarman the evertune bridge is only made by a german company called vgs at the moment, unless the copyright thing's gone and then it could be gibson, fender or anything in between c:

  • Cool vid, Phil, thanks for posting. My wife says "Hey, he likes to tinker with his guitars just like you!!!" LOL. Tip for you with the pickup springs: alligator clips or surgical clamps. It'll hold the spring in place just long enough to get the screws threaded into the pickup's legs.

  • Is it me or did he make that pocket marshall sound a lot better than it should have?

  • btw sir, you're my biggest inspiration when it comes to the guitar. I watch atleast one of your fretted americana videos before i practice every day (and often when i'm workin on scales i put the head phones and listen to you while i do so)

  • do you think gibson '57 humbuckers (i believe what was standard on the '60 les paul) would sound nasty on a reissue '72 tele (the tele that comes with humbuckers and a strat neck!)? by nasty i mean i want sick dirty good tone.

  • @bigtravis1313 i'm not sure, bigt. i've heard tele's sound really cool with humbuckers but it's a different wood make up than a les paul. plus, those pickups are probably low output. it doesn't hurt to try one out in the bridge before you commit. oh yeah... see if you can split it (4 conductor wiring) so you can get more of a tele tone at times.

  • @philx1111 you absolutely made my month by replying, and I will definitely keep that advice in mind when i get some money saved up.

    Thank you sir.

  • You should check these out for the spring problem! stewmac (.) com/shop/Tools/Special_tools_for_Electronics,_pickups/Humbucker_Helpers.html

  • Why the hell there's a tremolo guitar backplate on a tune'o'matic guitar?

Swapping pickups with the strings on, LIKE A BOSS

I think we're the only two guys who do it like that

  • @Octopus502 i mentioned why in the description. i just had an Evertune bridge system installed on this guitar and they remove a little bit of wood when doing so. thus the backplate.

  • @philx1111 Right on, did not see it. Thank you for the reply, phil. But hey, does it work or is it money and guitar routing for not much more than some roller saddles and locking tuners?

  • @Octopus502 Nope, gotta count me in on that too LOL!!

  • Have you ever tried Tesla Pickups? I have the Tesla Opus-1 in my LP and I can say it sounds freaking awesome. Good output, very rocky but also very very clear. Hard to describe.

  • Little dog!!

  • Who's the cameraman?

  • HEY PHIL! When's the next Drills album coming out?

  • @2minutestomammoth been working on it like crazy. fine tuning mixes and still have to sing 1 song. hopefully end of july.

  • I'm going to attempt to switch out my bridge burstbucker in my LP std today for a Dirty Fingers p'up...wish me luck, i'll probably fuck it up...

  • @barkatthemoon81 that's how we learn, man.

  • Phil, you must be the only guy who doesn't destring your guitar to change the pickup :D

  • i only use two screws cause i dont give a shit! bahaha. rockstar.

  • In your kitchen... OW!!

  • Phil, come to Pittsburgh, PA to play sometime...I`ll pick ya up from the airport.......then we rock!

  • My electric has been sounding buzzy too. In both pickups. Sometimes, it'll sound perfect, but then all of a sudden, it'll drop sound or start to buzz. It's a 91 SG with all original parts. So, I'd hate to try and replace anything.

  • @GuitarHeroPhenomSux you probably don't have to replace anything. just take it to a tech and have him check out all the solder points. if it's intermittent, it's probably a loose connection or cold solder joint.

  • @philx1111. Thanks for the info. The pickups are humbuckers by the way. Oh and congrats on the Bon Jovi tour. I almost got to see you when you came to New Orleans but I couldn't afford tickets.

  • Why do you have something yellow and blue in the neck pickup position of your guitar?

  • @captsomeguy1 it's a tiny wolverine action figure

  • Hey Phil, it's a LOT easier to solder pots, if you use one of those dorky technician visors that enlarge the view.....can get the solder exactly onto the joint and see it going on. ;-)

  • @OzziePete1 it's not my vision that's the problem, although the visor would make me look more professional. my hands are really shakey 'cause a) i can't wait to try it out and b) i'm a hyper motherfucker

  • @philx1111 Lol! Gotcha.....just thinking you'd see the solder joint a lot better, not criticising you. I found out that the visor helps with the solder joint. Amazing that the guitar in question holds tuning at all after that headstock mishap! Have a kick ass weekend mate, love your vids they area joy to watch. Ended up buying a Evil Robot combo, I was that impressed. :-)

  • D'oh, just checked out the Evertune bridge system. It keeps guitars in tune, in which case, this Viper is a perfect candidate.....

  • Can you make a video just showing us your personal guitars? or like demoing them?? :D Please

  • That power cord hovers dangerously close to the melty bit. Don't die Phil, take care now...

  • awesome much

  • Who is filming?

  • @sebastiaan222

I'm guessing it's Ninette, his wife

  • freekin rockin kitchen Phil!!!!

  • Dude. Do a phil x house tour!

  • About the problem installing the springs into the pickup assembly, I saw something in Stew Mac a while back called "Humbucker Helpers". Maybe that could help you out? Just a suggestion, rock on man

  • a fine head of hair

  • Phil has a dog XP

  • horrible as an instructional video, awesome as a vlog.
