One of the many reasons this version is magnificent is that Branford was raised right in the music.Bouncing arpeggios from Johnny Dodds, swing feel that contains the 'big four', the energy of 'Trane, the minor key probing of Miles, real modalism and not mere patterning, etc. This is THE WAY it is done if you are going to play "JAZZ". Feeling, personality, life...no matter how fast you can play, if you can't "say", you are lost.

Branford is the baddest cat on the planet. PERIOD.

When Branford comes out of the roach section at 9:05, the release of tension is amazing.

I honestly like this version better than Coltrane's one. Just my personal preference; Tain swings so much harder than Elvin Jones and Calderazzo is killing.

You've a right to your opinion; the fanboydom in these comments is generally over the top, but this one I can't let go.

It's clear to my ears, at least, that of everyone playing here, the one who's done the *least* amount of homework is Watts. If you can't take the time to transcribe, then at least listen to what's going on on Elvin's snare on this tune. Frankly, it's as if Watts never really dealt with Elvin. But then few have; Elvin is the Monk of drums.

I went back and listened to some trane recordings after listening to this a few weeks ago. I heard influences I thought I recognized from a player I'd been listening to recently and realized they were from Branford. He picked up influences from Trane when he made this recording from recordings I didn't even know about at the time. Cool!
