One of the many reasons this version is magnificent is that Branford was raised right in the music.Bouncing arpeggios from Johnny Dodds, swing feel that contains the 'big four', the energy of 'Trane, the minor key probing of Miles, real modalism and not mere patterning, etc. This is THE WAY it is done if you are going to play "JAZZ". Feeling, personality, life...no matter how fast you can play, if you can't "say", you are lost.
Branford is the baddest cat on the planet. PERIOD.
I honestly like this version better than Coltrane's one. Just my personal preference; Tain swings so much harder than Elvin Jones and Calderazzo is killing.
You've a right to your opinion; the fanboydom in these comments is generally over the top, but this one I can't let go.
It's clear to my ears, at least, that of everyone playing here, the one who's done the *least* amount of homework is Watts. If you can't take the time to transcribe, then at least listen to what's going on on Elvin's snare on this tune. Frankly, it's as if Watts never really dealt with Elvin. But then few have; Elvin is the Monk of drums.
@peace0freedom nah... tain wasnt playing love supreme he was playing with branford in 2004 not 1964. What he played was right, swinging and showed his knowledge of history
Fuck. One day I hope to get 10% of the power coming out of my sax as Branford does here... This is Trane's masterpiece interpreted in a fantastic, fresh way.
No matter how many comments are posted or how eloquent they are... words cannot possibly describe this performance. A few come to mind... Amazing, moving, emotional, driving, powerful, artistic. This is musical perfection. Yes... Trane WOULD be proud. Wow!!!
I went back and listened to some trane recordings after listening to this a few weeks ago. I heard influences I thought I recognized from a player I'd been listening to recently and realized they were from Branford. He picked up influences from Trane when he made this recording from recordings I didn't even know about at the time. Cool!
@harbansjoeljr Why ruin your "review" with vulgar language? Your positive tone was negated by the unnecessary and offensive language. You can do better than 4-letter words.
@roadlesstrvled because thats the shit right there, when I listen to this stuff I can't help but say "damn, these guys are mothafuckas" cus they play so well you, it makes you wanna shed for hours and then swear at yourself when you practice for hours on end to sound half as good as these guys then you see you need to work alot harder to get to that point where they are, so I swear and I say these guys are just great awesome mothafuckas! you a mothafucka too but its a good thing homebori:)

When Branford comes out of the roach section at 9:05, the release of tension is amazing.

7:12 is the most epic drumming I have ever seen. He's soaking wet from the combined effort of playing the drums, passion, and intensity.
