Kangal dogs have been around since Assyrian and Babylonian periods. Geographically and not politically, Its not just in turkey, but found mainly in Mesopotamia. In the past they use to use these dogs to hunt down lions. My grandad has one in turkey. Mainly used by south eastern turkey....as they are in to their live stock.

Although a male Fila Brasileiro can definitely hold its own. I've been researching the Volkodav breeds, and they are very impressive. Pyrenean Mastiffs, CAOs, CO, SROs, Sage Kooche, Mioritics, Bukovinas, Armenian Shepherd dogs, Tibetan Mastiff, Kangal, Akbash, Maremma, are all very impressive.

I had the priviledge in the mid 80's to visit Wildlife Safari in Winston, Oregon, where Laurie Marker first worked, before she took her save-the-cheetah program back to Africa. While at the zoo, I had the wonderful opportunity to have my picture taken with her cheetah ambassador, Khayam. I can still remember how soft that cat's fur was and the sweetness of her personality. Will never forget K's curly tail, either! :0)

I have a question though..As far as I know Kangals become very aggressive in hot areas..We had a half-bred in the Western Anatolian region and it would go mad in the summer - midday. I don't see how they get used to the Savannah..

Great vid. Exept 1 part. You say - cheetahs arent safe in nature reserves. Thats wrong. Yeas other predators steal the cheetahs kills, kill their cubs, even adult cheetahs ect. But that has been happening for tens of thousends of years. And cheetahs populations have only grown. Its only since the 20 century that they, (along with many many other spiecies) have become endangered. So you cant blame the environment or other predators. The only reason cheetahs arent doing well is humans!

The proper pronounciation of Kangal is Khan-Ghal.

I am very happy to see that this Turkish bred dog can do something to help our friends in Africa and also save the cheetah race from being killed.

Although as a previous Kangal owner, i would hope that you are staying true to the breed and not mixing it with other breeds. As mixing the Kangal with other breeds have resulted in dogs that can become the opposite of the Kangal, vicious, non-loyal and aggressive.

I am from Sivas region in Turkey, where these dogs are native! My dad'd Kangal was killed by a pack of hungry wolves... He put a good fight though... He killed one wolf before he died... He was an old dog...

A typical Kangal dog is very brave, very calm (unles chalanged) and very loving...

Forgot to mention that the female who was attacked by the 4 coyotes survied but she now bears a scar on her face as a reminder. She has actually killed 12 coyotes on her own... not all at once but over time. Her companion that defended her DID kill 4 at one time to get them off of her though. These dogs are massive and extremely powerful.

Kangals and Anatolian Shepherds are NOT a breed for everyone! Never train them to fight & NEVER hit or abuse them. They will protect themselves even from their owners if being abused. There are no BAD pets but there are some bad owners. They must be taught what to bark at & what not to. This is a big one if the dog is a pet and not a working dog. Especially if you have neighbors near by. Wonderful pets if they have the right owner. Most are great dogs for guarding flock while some are not.

I have owned two Kangals/Anatolian Shepherds. They are loving, loyal, & protective of their family. They guard for as far as they can see, hear, & smell. I know someone whose Kangal killed 4 coyotes for attacking his female while she was guarding flock. Some are terrific with a flock while others are not.
