  • Been to 10 glastos and various other festivals and this followed by the newly reformed Verve was the most beautiful 4 hours of my entire life. Fucking legend.

  • This was one of my all time Glasto highlights. He had us in the palm of his hand for 2.5 hours. Grown men crying with the whole performance. Truly unforgettable. Great upload

  • Seen Leonard in 3 concerts. I am mesmerised by him. First heard him in the early 70's . Love his poetry, adore his music. He gives over 3 hours in a concert but so good is he, that you think you have only been there an hour.

Thank you God for sending us Leonard

  • Can’t deny that LC is one of the absolute best. The meaning of Halleluyah is from Hebrew ‘Praise Yah’, from first two letters of YHWH. So, is this song is a Hallellujah to something else, or is LC, like the psalmist, still able to look upwards, even in the darkest times...?

  • so wish i could have been in that crowd

  • This isn't the best version he's sung. But his talent is amazing. He's such a skilled songwriter and singer. The sun going down is just so much more amazing.

I don't even like religious songs but this one sends a chill down My spine and I love it.

  • don't agree ,,,, watch the people in the audience ,,,, there is no comparison to studio anything ,,, lenny pierces folks ,

  • this version requires you to have already been touched by this song previously in order to fully enjoy i think. listen to a studio recording, thats the closest you can get to the original vision barring some sort of "divine" intervention.

  • he always said he does nt have the best voice,, but dear god,,, he sings with his soul,,, and that is sublime

  • @TheDamePlume yes ! he did not write listening to all of us ,,, he wrote listening to what's inside him

  • Nothing more annoying than the idiot singing out loud.

  • the problem is that most people, think if it's sung by an old guy, it can't be good. while I don't think the original version, nor this one is the best, it's his song. If anyone could determine how best to sing it or how much energy and soul was needed for it, it would be Leonard Cohen.

he's not pop and just like Kurt Nilson, because he isn't the prettiest or the most popular or the best looking, he gets pushed aside to the shadows.

looks does not equal great singer..

  • mr cohen is one increaible man

  • Cohen wrote it, Buckley covered it, Wainright murdered it, and now all modern artists copy the prostrate body

  • don't lash out to those who can't get exited over this. LC is (IMHO) the perfect mix of poetry and music. But some people just may need different stimuli to start resonating. One day they will. And this one is one of his best of the best of the best ..;-)

    Everybody be good, halleluja !

  • No, it doesn't get any better than Leonard Cohen. The musical world has been blessed by his presence and the great body of music he has given us.

  • I cried watching this clip, just as my mates and I did in that field in Somerset in 2008. Brings back incredible memories, thanks so much.

  • @ffenest

Right back at you. Cry every time I watch this clip. Largely depression that I'm not there right now. LC has always been my hero, I was happy to see him at Glasto, and elated that the whole crowd (young/old/rich/poor/sober/inebriated) all fell under his spell...

  • most peacefull song on earth good job leo

  • You don't really care for Jehovah, Leonard, do Yah? But yah do like a bit of Dylan.

  • how right you are Roger ....ignorance and fundamental darkness seem to rule the plantet these days...

  • Yes, Hallelujah, Leonard Cohen....Halllelujah...The world is blessed because you are here...I have loved your songs for decades, and you are still the poet Laureate

  • Love you Len!

  • sounds great.

  • a bit shaky , like da cam , but still :Gr8 !

  • How can you say that sucks?

Tell me another 75 year old that can sing like that.

  • He says it sucks because he is too young, has no depth of character and has no soul. Tell me of another 75 year old who can still make women half his age swoon?

  • Someone should beat that guy singing along with a removable vacuum attachment.

  • Really beautiful song!!

    Thanks, for this video.

  • Killer. Gorgeous. Sublime. Music, music, music...

  • I think Cohen's deep emotion can hard felt by young people. We can't deny that Jeff Buckley also interpreted well so that it is wide spread and be loved by many, though it sounds much better at the first, however, after a while,we know Cohen's emotion is deeper, and it will be in history.

  • his voice and his song are amazing

  • ledhead,,,,,you sureley r a LEDHEAD.

  • man what a song, i really admire him as a composer.

  • one word-BRILLIANT

  • You're pretty stupid, seen as if it weren't for Leonard Cohen, this song wouldn't exist.

  • Haha fair enough. I can understand why you think that, he does tend to talk more than sing, but he's still an epic musician. He won an award for his voice, but he himself was in disbelief over it lol, but I've forgotten what he said.

  • he is a smoker. his voice used to be much better. listen to old versions of the partisan or suzzane.

  • from an oldie,he wrote this,he knows how to interpret his own works, the mans a genius,he may appear pathetic to the uninitiated but he can sing

  • jeff who? Never heard of him.

  • A DREAM!!!

  • Can"t believe its a year since Cohen was on stage at Glasstonbary, magic performance. This song stole the show of the entire festival. 17&18 yrs olds, who had never even heard of him were in total amazement of this frail old man performing one the most moving songs Glasstonbary has ever witnessed.

  • Oh to have been there. Although The Dome Brighton circa 75 or NEC Birmingham latest tour ( & hope not the last?!)

  • my poop is nice

  • i dont like his voice

    but great song

  • I've sung the pants off of girls with this song.

  • Leonard Cohen is the God of Music and Poetry if that is possible .McAsherz do some research you fool, this is the writer of Hallelujah. Leonard Cohen is pure musical, lyrical and poetic genius. He is the poet laureate of not only his native Canada, but the world, and one of the very best musicians alive. If you want to see the most fantastic concert ever then go to Leonard Cohen's and you will have to re-evaluate your naive comments. I've seen Clapton from the floor, love him but Len's my MAN!

  • this video defines glasto 2008 for me, best song of the festival and also includes the 'fist me jesus' flag. class.

  • Yeh I think cowell and co have duped the youngsters into thinking that good singing has to sound like Celine or Whitney.

Even Garrett Gates and Will Young sound like females.

My advice? Ditch X factor and explore youtube for some real talent.

  • The crowd is singing better? Lol, great musical statement!

  • It depends on who's covering it. I personally think John Cale does a better job than anyone with this song but I think we can agree that the idiots who watch X Factor or American Idol etc should stay away from this beautiful and INTELLIGENT song.

  • Who's the artist? The Author or the Reader?

LC wrote the song without him there are no covers!

Interpretation is down to personal taste. Only the creator can convey the true spirit no matter how good the cover.

    Roger Brown - London England

  • To zahrone, thanks, Proletarians/Highbrow the same, both classes are generally ignorant (with some exceptions) just different ends of the spectrum, The X factor is aimed at proletariat by definition, High brow these days are proletariat with money ! This is not a class thing I was only referring to proletariat because the Alex version is aimed at them in a commercial sense. LC is not about class it's whether you get him or not! !This is not snobbish LC is a poet singer songwriter!

  • To xmakatanakid, thanks for the comment but what has being a member of the proletariat got to do with 1984?Suggest you read up on both and get back to me.

  • love you leo, one of the choosen.

  • Who's the artist? The writer of a book or the reader.

It doesn't surprise me that the greatest living human being on the planet LC is not understood by the X factor crowd and never will be. This is the problem when the proletariat are exposed to culture. The world is in a dark place with millions of dark souls, when the light comes - they can't see it.

    Roger Brown London

  • I agree , if you can't see what this is you are lost !

  • To roger

That's what I'm saying on and on and on. He's the most deep and spiritual man I ever met. But I won't say that proletarians

don't understand what Leonard is talking about. Maybe they'll do better than highbrowrd people.

  • proleteriat? did you have to go all '1984' on us ;) anyway, I'd consider myself relatively cultured despite my apparent class. gotta agree with you about this being on a completely different level to the x factor garbage.

  • @rogeruk23 I completely agree. Cohen is the greatest songwriter the world has ever seen, followed closely by bob dylan, but neither would be understood by today's audiences, who have been reared on the X factor (crap) and thus only care about pretty people with good voices but who couldn't write a good song to save their lives

  • @rogeruk23 Oh man. This is nothing more than snobbery.

  • @rogeruk23 I'm an "old bad" who was once young. I thank the gods, every day, that Leonard Cohen was born and has helped me move up a step in my next life.

  • You really don't get it do you? Go back to VH1.

  • @McAsherz - Cohen is the original author of Hallelujah, shut up you fool. And his voice, for an aged man like him, is still wonderful and full of emotion.

  • @McAsher: don't bother to put another comment ! Leonard Cohen is such a great artist ! The best ever !. Once again, Bravo ! Congrat Leonard, you're a star !

  • lol i'll comment what i like.

  • wow ...uh

    Alexandra broke this song..

Leo and even Jeff actually feel this song, Alexandra just sings it; something many good singers can do. Takes talent to really feel the music.

  • Love the drunk guy singing in the background.

  • that was great! thankyou for sharing video.

  • He has the money, everybody knows that. This performance isn't about money. It's Cohen doing what gives him pleasure. Don't hate that way.

  • I am pretty sure he doesn't have the money. The reason he is playing shows has to do with some manager screwing him out of his savings or something along those lines. Although I could be making that up. Pretty sure I read it somewhere.

  • That is correct, his former manager stole some £5.4million which is unlikely to be recovered. So in the midst of all the debates regarding which is the better version which happened at Christmas, the greatest triumph is that the song reached the huge audience it deserves, and Cohen is rightly rewarded financially, and his wonderful compositions are introduced to a new generation.

  • Cohen's manager actually stole millions off him - he isn't as rich as you would think therefore. Luckily now the royalties will be flowing in nicely from Alexandra Burke and Jeff Buckley, not to mention his recent amazing tour! Things hopefully are looking up for him. =]

  • You're... Wrong.

This is Hallelujah the way it should be.

You don't need showy in-your-face guitar/vocals to make this song amazing.

Cohen is the only one who can do this justice, because Hallelujah is no song. This is a cry from inside his heart.

  • You are a douche!

I've also read that he does not have the rights to the covers, which - if true - is a travesty.

  • mm I like this version and the Damien Rice version actually.

  • Makes me laugh when X-factor fans know shit about music! and it pisses me off when some start slagging off cohen and Buckley! whom they knew nothing about til you argued with them that Alex Burke version is crap and never wrote it! :)

  • With all these arguments about the 'definitive' version(cover) of 'Hallelujah', I wonder who's interpretation of his song was the best in Cohen's opinion?

  • good point - but he banked every check - so does he really give a toss in the end?

  • amazing*

  • Bloody awful, but a fantastic song writer. Beautfiful song.

  • what day was he on? i obviously didnt read the set list very well.

  • I thing it's marvelous the way he isn't showing off, you watch alexandra's version and you see all those little cinematic movements. It's full of sex and everything vulgar, everything untrue that ever crept into music. I hate Alexandra and I hate pop music today.

  • hats off to you my friend

  • You realise Cohen wrote this song?

  • true! atleast someone remembers cohen wrote this... there's a comment on another video sayin "what a crap version of alexandras song" ffs!! alexandra burke is a worse version of leona lewis!!

  • sigh**

  • You can't be serious.

  • you are a fucking moron! what you listining right now is the song of the best songwriter on this poor earth which has to carry such idiots like you on its surface.

  • Cohen has said interviews he has doesnt know how many verses there are to this song as each artist who does the song seems to add new ones. He also said it is still a work in progress. One of my favourite songs of all time.

  • good job ;)))))) beautiful

  • Beautiful...

  • L2sing

  • Some great shots here, man :)

  • Dylan and Cohen were at a cafe once. Dylan asks how long this song took to write, he replies 5 years. Dylan was surprised and so Cohen asked how long I and I took to write and he replied 15 minutes. In an interview a few years later he stated

We knew we were both lying. It took me 10 years to write Hallelujah and it would've taken dylan about 10 minutes to write this song.

But this song is originally a book length song. And as Cohen says, Dylan's songs are unpolished jems.

  • i bet you dont

  • how much?

  • you are also a douche in real life :D

  • when i was at glastonbury, i don't think i've ever seen quite so many people cry at the same time. there's this atmosphere about him, especially when he sings this, that makes you feel everything at once and you just feel overpowered by your own emotions.

    it was incredible.

  • Hahaha. That made me chuckle... "wait, did he say glastonbury? WOOOOO!!! - what a man..."

    xxx

  • Cohen makes Dylan sound like the "laughing policeman" great....

  • Dylan is also a great poet. But sadly that's all..

  • You're kidding right?

    I hate fanboys

  • Though thinking about this properly. In my opinion Cohen's voice has bettered with age where as Dylans has withered.

If this is what you ment then sorry

  • Yep, ya can't beat the original

  • He's old, he's passionate, he's brilliant.

  • haha he does sound tanked up lmao don't believe its about an orgasm like pffft

  • Saw him in Helsingborg, sweden, the same tour. Magical. I have never seen anyone in my life, especially not on stage in front of thousands, being so humble and modest. The texts are unmatched in the history of modern music.

  • Or thats what buckley thought

  • This is not a christian song. It's a fact that leonard cohen wrote the song about the power and beauty of an orgasm. Look it up

  • he sounds tanked up...

  • no quetion he's a great poet-song writer,but,singing voice?.

  • you wouldn't say that if like simon cowell you were bringing in 2m pounds a day through it. he owns this version and the jeff buckley version as well as the x factor version. and all of them are in the top 40 in england

  • tuibrogue, I dont think that people have their hands in the air because they think it's a christian song, its pretty obvouse that someone called Leonard Cohen is Jewish. But this is probably the most beautiful and well written song ever written, or at least one of them, pretty hard to quantify that. And i agree that its shite that the X-Factor released it but at least because of it both Cohen and Buckley's versions made it into the the top40 which means a load more people are going to hear them

  • I couldn't watch it with all the praytards holding their hands in the hair as if this was actually a xtian song. have any of them ever read the lyrics?

  • Have admired Leonard Cohen for a long time since my 20's (now 50 ) can't believe X- Factor have chosen to trash this beautiful song , for a start in my opinion its suited better to a male voice , but hey ho !

  • I read in the paper that it took leonard cohen 5 or 15 years to right hallelujah (can't remember)

But this is the true master and no x factor wannabe can even compare to this.

  • The people in the crowd were real people. Not X Factor puppets

  • At least he does all the verses. The last one is the best one and no one ever sings it.

  • good on laughing lenny.

im sure he gives a shit about this stupid furore over who covers his music.

its money in the (stolen) bank for him,so frankly im delighted xtractor used it.

  • cohen will not recieve a penny. He sold his back catalog to sony at the advice of his manager who then fleeced him of his $7million retirement fund. That is why he is having to tour again at the age of 75.

  • If that story is true then I despair. I hope he getting a pension.

What a magician, wrapping his deep and original voice, and thus bringing to life, his brilliant poetry.

In Top Gear parlance: Some say that he can depress a whole nation so much that they will vote for suicide to be mandatory from the age of 18. Or, that he has an alarm clock to awaken him, with an explosive devise inside. Set at 8 am. By him.

On this bombshell, all we know he is that he is not the Stig!

  • He has reportedly earned 5 million back from his tour and he actually still retains mechanical rights to the song, though not all rights. These are enough to earn him an estimated extra £1 million on top of that. Oh and he is 74 :)

  • haha i nearly wet ma self listening to that guy sing oer him at the start!! leonard cohen genius writer but not as good at singing unfortunatly!

  • anyone who was at Glastonbury this year heard the master sing HIS Hallelujah. How can anyone else compare ? Having said that, FGTH's version of Born to Run kicks Bruce's ass...

  • Cannot believe anyone with music in their hearts can say this is the best version? Where is the quality, emotion and voice in the drawl that Leaonard has produced for 40 years. Boring boring boring

  • You wouldn't have the song without him. Think about that you obnoxious twat.

  • this was the highlight of glastonbury 08 for me, and glastonbury 08 was probably the highlight of my whoe life : )

i dont care that x-factor loving idiots will think 'whos dis old man covering alexandras song he's just talking innit' as long as the guy earns some money to have a happy retirement after being robbed so nastily

    leonard, i salute you!

  • simon towel from wet factor is only promoting his bank balance and his ego with karaoke jobs manufactured its the songwriters who have endurance as the beatles do and as leonard cohen does who wrote hallelujah so hallelujah to cohen

  • Good on him for being the creattor of this song. Still can't help but disagree with most of the comments here. I definately prefer Jeff Buckley's version.

  • Whoever 'cover's Leonard's song only reinforces my belief that his is sublime. I agree please download Cohen's version, he was fleeced of his life earnings by his manager and he has given us a legacy of beautiful songs with powerful lyrics.

  • *Please* download the original Cohen version of this song from itunes or wherever. The early mid week download chart in the UK:

    Top: Alexandra Burke - Hallelujah

    2nd: Leona Lewis - Run

    3rd: Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah

'Poised to enter the chart': Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah [his original version].

    Thanks!

  • Breaking news. Lenny enters UK singles chart this evening at no. 34. Please download. Please please please.

  • Only one person sings this with feeling. That is Lenny

  • *Please* download the original Cohen version of this song from itunes or wherever. The early mid week download chart in the UK:

    Top: Alexandra Burke - Hallelujah

    2nd: Leona Lewis - Run

    3rd: Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah

'Poised to enter the chart': Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah [his original version].

    Thanks!

  • the man is a singing legend and anyone who is trying to say jeff buckleys"origianl" was better, he cant't possibly have because this is the best and original!

  • was that the group karaoke version?

  • Are you joking?!?! This is the man that WROTE the song, and performed it originally! Buckley's version may be more to your tastes, but you can't claim it's his song!!

  • Indeed, as the originating artist he has the right to define how it should be sung.

  • The start of a wave that promises to be huge. Go with the flow. Halleluja

  • Tsk tsk...Its not jeff Buckley's song originally. Admittedly though, this version is ruined by the crowd

  • But we know the truth....is our gorgeous, lovely beautiful Cohen...X:D

  • God in Heaven - I love Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah!

  • nowhere will be safe and all the chavs will be singing their incoherent imitations of her materialistic plastic version.. the end of the world is nigh..

  • lol

  • god save from the alexandra burke version ...all sound no substance to her warbling version

  • mon vooeux mr cohen, etre dans la foule pour chanter alluyaaaaaaaaa et vous rencontrer comme neil young j l ai fais

  • ummmmm, yeah you think?

  • i don't think his voice is actually that good, even though the lyrics and songs are really good. just think that there are other people hu've sung it better.

  • Is called singing from the heart with feelings

  • must.see.leonard cohen.live.before he dies of old age!!!

  • Leonard has been writing poetry since the late 1950's when I first read him as a teen in New York. (Let Us Compare Mythologies, Beautiful Losers/ novel) The music is the vehicle for his readings. IMO he's been the best anti-hero poet working live gigs the last 50 years. Like bad whiskey his grows on you. What I like about the way he sings is his voice is real and he's a man, but a humble one; he doesn't belt it out. You have to lean in to listen and so you hear each word.

  • The Welsh-language adaption of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah is out today on CD.

Go to Brigyn's YouTube Channel to view the video of 'Haleliwia', and for details of where to buy the new single.

    Diolch // Thanks! :-)

  • There's a good recording of Leonard's Bournemouth show 11/11/08 here megauploadDOTcom/?d=AAFNKXR0 and here megauploadDOTcom/?d=0ISGIB95 (just swap the DOT for a . )

  • if you were to take away the music you would think this guy was just talking ....im sorry not that entertaining
