I have already recovered most of the data off of the hard drive. Windows couldn't see the drive but live linux cd could. Greg Ellison

Sounds like the spindle motor is stuck. The chattering is it trying to spin up, but cannot do so for some reason. Get this drive looked at if you stored any valuable data that you hadn't backed up.
