  • fantastic Ronnie Drew sings this song with a lot of feeling R.I.P. Ronnie

  • I think this song defines Post Tramautic Stress Disorder very well. This man was a sailor (gainfully employed and not homeless) who went through a traumatic event and became unable to function in society (became homeless). I salute you, Donegal Danny, and hope that you found rest. May all those who serve upon the sea be kept safe in the arms of the Lord.

  • They played this song in the Caledon part of Second Life! I loved it!

  • Ronnies dead a year today....RIP a legend of a man

  • ronnie drew will never die with songs like this. RIP

  • Powerful stuff!

  • a great great song

  • I heard that Phil Coulter wrote this. Does anyone have any details of the crew that died , or is it just a song written about people that died at sea in general?

  • Has been a long way since I knew THE DUBLINERS, maybe in 1975. I like them in that times and today. I keep many Lp' s of this group and now I hear them in you tube also. Tahnk you for posting

  • MAGIC!!! We used to all sing this in the '70s coming back from Celtic games on the JFK supporters bus from Perth. I say on the way back cos we were a wee bit more mellow by then, and songs like this came more to the fore and suited the mood. Of course it was the rebel songs full blast on the way to the game. (oh, and all during the game too, heehee.)

  • why were u now

  • Superb music.

  • up the dubs!

  • What a song. I hadnt heard it for 20yrs at least and it still brought a tear to my eye. My uncle, tho from Teelin, used to sail out off KIllybegs to fish, and also lost several friends to the sea. I always remember him when i hear this song. God Bless him and Ronnie to. What a great voice.

  • What a great song, thanks very much for posting it and to those who have left and gone, RIP

  • I've been playing this song on my acoustic for a long time, but I cannot remember where I heard it first..tho I know this is not the version I heard when I was a young'n. Is there another famous one?

  • I don't think there is another version. I first heard this sung by the Dubliners in 1974. I assumed it was a traditional folk song but later found out it was written in the 60s or early 70s by Phil Coulter who I think was the Dubliners manager at one stage. He also wrote the Eurovision song contest winner 'Puppet on a string' which is a complete contrast in style to Donegal Danny.

  • I'm new to the Dubliners. I love this, just great! thanks for posting it, keep up the good work.

  • If you're new to the Dubliners, check out the videos posted by kellyoneill. It's a lot of magnificent songs by the legendary Luke Kelly, definitely the best singer the Dubliners ever had - perhaps the best singer Ireland ever had.

This might very well be Ronnie Drew's best performance, by the way.

  • @oskhen85 this song is one of the very best of Ronnies songs but he did many in his way - and he did it good- The Dubliners was a fantastic group when Luke, Ronnie, Ciaron, Barney and John was the members- but thet still are a fantastic group - see them every year when they are in Denmark

  • What a fabulous song. And sung so well. The likes of Ronnie Drew and Luke Kelly won't be seen again. They were a product of their time. RIP

  • I totally agree. R.I.P.

  • @Poldweia thats true - the Dubliners was and is a fantastic group - i talked to Ronnie and Luke after a concert in Galway in 1968. That is nice to remember and i will never forget

  • Lord have mercy on Ronnie and Luke - and away we are into the future.......

  • one of my favourite songs from the legendary dubliners!

  • single? check my profile out!

    umm ok Zy

  • they also have a song with this in the lyrics;

" I was dancing in the morning when the sun was young "

i need this song for my uncle,

does someone know the title of this dubliners song?

  • @KONINGKRAB

"I danced in the morning when the world was begun

I danced in the Moon & the Stars & the Sun..." ?

mean that? Thats *Lord of the dance* sung by Jim

  • Awesome absolutely awesome. This is one of the Dubliners best Irish songs, may their name and legend be remembered forever!. Thanks russellhoffer for this excellent Dubliners music video.5*****

  • my great uncle was a killybegs fisherman who died at sea. my grandma would well up if she heard this song. brilliant song.

  • Wow, great song. Never heard this one before and im already lovin it !

  • "Here's to those who are dead and gone":-

Ciaran,Luke,Bob,and Ronnie - "The friends that we loved dear"

    RIP

  • love this song - RIP Ronnie

  • I too worked as a fisherman for many years and come from a fishing family..this song really is a tribute to all who have died in search of the silver shoals...its NOT a pleasant place to be in a force 9 and your heart in your mouth as the waves crash down...I salute all men of the sea...a very special breed indeed...Ronnie was a personal friend....May he rest in Peace!

  • they called him "the kind of Ireland". that he was...i just wish i was back in Ireland to see his funeral, if it was public that is.

  • King would be great

For All the Dubliners thanks a million!

  • Here's to those who are dead and gone...RIP Mr. Drew.

  • Praying for you Ronnie. (R.I.P.)

  • this song was written in the aftermath of the two trawler disasters on rathlin o`beirne, co.donegal in the early seventies. the burtonport trawlers evelyn marie and carraig una foundered within 18 months of each other but unlike the song there was no survivors. from either boat

  • we have all mist a great man.good bles you ronnie hope you have fun hverever you are.

  • up donegal!!!!!!!!!!! R.I.P RONNIE.

  • R.I.P. and god bless RONNIE.... ur a true irishman , as u know when we sang that song, ill cherish it RONNIE, god bless, and have a good one ...Sean..

  • It reminds of finglas, lol, Hail to da boys.

  • This is a sad song about a fisherman from Donegal who lost all his friends were they drowned at sea, he was the only survivor. He will never will work the sea again because of the accident. He is in the pub reminising about that terrible night. He is toasting a drink to his lost friends.

  • in the summer i will travel to the eastsea

i hope, that i can go on the sea with a boat

  • can someone tell me what this song is about?

i mean who is donegal danny?

im from germany and i dont understand it very well

  • Mieserwixer, basically the story is this..

Danny was an Irish fisherman from Donegal.

He has vowed never to return to sea since one night he and 4 other crew men set sail fom Killybegs, and were caught in a storm. The boat was swept into rocks, where it crashed and sank. The crewmen all jumped into the sea to save themselves, but only Danny survived.

Danny has never forgotten the horror of that night, and the loss of his dear friends.

  • aaah thank you okay

    sad but it rocks

i can imagine the dubliners as the crew^^

  • @CTmania It was him and five other fishermen, actually ("There were five of us from sweet Donegal, and one from county Down") (If I've heard correctly - sorry it's nitpicking, I know)

  • Hi remember going fishing of Donegal in a 36 foot half decker out about 6 miles scariest time of my life it turned into a force 8 gale. The fishermen who go out day after day have no fear its a dangerous job and sadly a lot have been lost over the years.

  • youre right!

    i love the sea

  • @mieserwixer

I was once told this song was about my uncle, Danny McCallig from St. John's Point, near Killybegs. He was from a fishing family - all the brothers were fishermen and his youngest brother was lost at sea at the age of 18. I remember the story of the drowning and how one survivor followed a light across the water and scaled a steep bank to safety before the light disappeared. I think his name was Danny Gallagher so it's possible that both Danny's are the inspiration.

  • @epicz1231 I love this

  • im drunk and this song gives me a great feeling in this moment

    this will live forever

  • sorry

  • lol

  • uppppppppp dub

  • love ronnie drews voice

  • never been on a fishing boat but hands up a dangerous job .

  • heil from germany!!!

  • top tune , class

  • i'd like to take this chance with this song in mind , and pay my respects to the donegal brothers who the sea claimed while out on there trawler.danny was one of the brothers name, the only consolation i would take from this is they died together..in there late 60's and early 70s its what i would call a tragic loss, so think of them when you hear this song, 15-3-2008.......

  • Would like to make a dedication to Stoker 1st class Edward Wall R.C.N. North Sydney N.S. K.I.A. October 1942

  • I fished on a white fish boat out of Killybegs for 2 years in the '80s. I'll tell ya this much "deadliest catch" (Discovery Channel) is pretty fuckin' accurate

  • reminds me of my time fishing out of killybegs ,

  • In memory of Norwegian fishermen who have died at sea in the hundreds up through the years. And special to a childhood friend of mine and his son(14) who both froze to death

    at sea in april 2004.

  • Fucking Awesome song. Reminds me of the late 80's. Both parents are Irish and whenever we'd leave London to go on a long journey like the seaside The Dubliners tape would be there. For some reason this song and 'Willie MacBride' stick most in my head.

  • my god this song is great. sad but great. fuckin legends.

  • replin to d comments futer down d page about ronnie s great songs dannie farrell would hve to be up der wit dem a legent luke kelly is sadly missed fuckin legents

  • Great song. I spent a lot of time in Ireland in my younger years as my mother came from County Leitrim. In all that time I never heard this song played in a pub where you could be guaranteed to hear all the radional classics.

I was told a few years later that you won't in fact hear this song played in Ireland very often as it evokes, particularly around Donegal, a lot of very sad memories.

Great song nonetheless and very moving.

  • Fabulous song - fantastic country!

  • now u have it

  • when i hear this song i imagine myself in that pub in donegal what a great song pity about the poor fishermen though there still dying in those poxy fishing boats.

  • Ronnie Drew has the most distinctive and amazing voice

  • I'am a fishman..great fucken song.

  • Great song! Great pic. with our beloved, sadly missed Luke - and Ciaran.

  • The best song that Ronnie ever sang ,[ by Phil Coulter]

  • i dunno he sand a few good songs if you ask me but yeah he sings this very well indeed

  • And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda is better

  • Waltzing Matilda still makes me cry or very nearly. this is a sad song too, but sung so well it makes ya happy even tho the words are so sad.

  • man i love waltzing matilda, he sings that very well
