If someone had been inside, I'm sure the firefighters would have gone in and saved them (but still let the house burn down). They should, however, have offered to the guy to put out the fire for full price (say $5000) or whatever the operation costs.

Hey Phil, love most of your logic... but on this one I have to point out a small fail in regards to the firefighters not putting out a fire... 1 = no one died - except sadly the animals that the owners left in the house while they tried to put the fire out with a hose (retards - get the animals first). 2 - this is like getting in a car wreck, and then being mad at a car insurance company that you didn't pay doesn't fix your car. If they would've paid the $75 then the FD would put out the fire.

Phil, you haven't though about it. You can't have a voluntary fire service if people can insist you put out their house even if they haven't paid the subscription. It is the non-paying dudes fault. If someone had been inside, I'm sure the firefighters would have gone in and saved them (but still let the house burn down). They should, however, have offered to the guy to put out the fire for full price (say $5000) or whatever the operation costs.

@newperve ive done a little more research about the whole incident, and honestly after reading so many of other people's comments, including yours, i would be arrogant not to see the legitimate points made. i suppose it is only fair. i still however feel morally obligated to save the home. i know it may sound stupid, but to me it would make sense that they save the home, and then perhaps using police intervention or perhaps a tribulation, the family would be forced to pay.

If your morality is consequentialist I would argue that the consequences of having the house burn down (more people pay the fee, one house burns down) are overall positive. As I understand it there is serious problems (legal? political?) with trying to collect money for saving houses that are burning.

In fact my moral stance in this issue comes from a beleif in property rights which forbid any demand that someone use their own property without compensation.

I'm not saying they should get away with breaking the rules. I'm saying the rules in this scenario are ludicrous. Why is there no provision for people that didn't pay the fee? Bill them $500 if they didn't pay the fee. Heck, bill them $2,000. I've heard of people running up more than that just going to the ER, getting a ton of tests done, only to find out nothing was wrong. This was a real threat and their inaction lead to the neighbors house nearly burning down as well.

Why isn't the fire department policy so that you can 1: pay the $75 'insurance' or 2: Not pay and when they respond you pay the fine for not having the insurance (after the fire is put out).
