I have mixed opinions. First, I have had teachers (and pastors for that matter) that would bring their political views into their lesson/preaching. This always garnered a nice wtf when you finally got out of there. Now on the other hand, you are a teacher. It is your job to evoke creative intellectual thought. So with that I think its wonderful if you want to bring a view point even a far skewed one to light. I noticed that you mentioned in an earlier video how many die in iraq;they die so

The guy is an economics prof (...I think thats what I heard)...and his point is that although horrific events like this take place, from an economic point of view it has no effect. Colleges and Universities are exactly the place to discuss and debate these issues. If you want to give the guy an insensativity award then have at it...but to dismiss with no oversight or review...talk about draconian.

I think everyone is missing the point here. I dont think he was fired for his views on gun control. He was fired because he was giving his political views in class instead of doing his job which was to teach economics. Even if the gun issue was in the context of what he was teaching. Its not a teachers job to sway students one way or the other.

As a VT alumni and friend of a student that was shot last week, I applaud the school firing Nicholas Winset.

Nicholas, wake up and take responsibility for your actions. Students go to class to learn - not to be "pretend" shot at by their teacher within a week of the nation's worst shooting rampage - even in a discussion.

I wouldn't list, "Can shoot students with a marker only days after school shootings occur..." on your resume.

This "speaking out" doesn't exactly help you either.

He did it to show how someone can try and help themselves against an attacker. He did not do it to threaten students. Most of the students did not even find it offensive. I can understand your point of view considering you are an alumni. But the fact is that he was not imposing his view nor threatening anyone, just discussing a current event that he had been asked to discuss.
