Always liked this part of the movie. He could have carried on with the pirouettes much longer and technically much better. A red line through all of this film when you compare them as dancers, Baryshnikov's classical training shows in everything they do. The stepping of Hines might be good, but he has no body control, no posture.
I loved this movie when I was a teen. Both men are/were (RIP Mr. Hines) the best in the business at their craft. Mikhail may be a little guy, but I can totally see why women would want him. He's still good looking, has the accent, great artist, famous, rich, and an alpha male. Kinda like Prince, other than the accent!
I watched this on the big screen first and that was enough to hook every person inthe cinema. I just showed this to my fiance and he - a complete non-dance, non-ballet person - was completely impressed!
I remember Rudolph as the dancer's dancer but Mishka leaves him in the dust!
Rudy got me into Ballet and Mishka taught me what to do with it! .¸¸.ღ`☆´ღ.¸¸.
The guy showed the world that the Dance is a shared domain of men and women. Without any loss of masculinity. One of the greats. Men today can still learn a lot from him....especially about the power of grace. Thanks FunnydancerAnne.
Not that it isn't impressive (and it is), but you'd be a fool to make such a bet without specifying height of passe leg. Crank the bottom of the toes above the knees and all of a sudden the number of turns is cut in half.
Baryshnikov is the shit. So was Gregory Hines, unfortunately, he is gone, great loss. Dance is the best, studied for 8 yrs.. Really admire great dancers, so visceral & uplifting.
I'm sorry if this is stupid, but I've just put 11 roubles in a few currency converters - it came out as 24 pence (British Sterling)...have I missed something??
@andreasblochmanz It's "My Love is Chemical" by Lou Reed. I have it on my IPod for workout sessons, and think of Misha every time. It's a killer song, man!
lolol he makes me so angry how he's just walking around and chucks out a double pirouette with his arms flinging around and stuff. why can't i do that...
I have NEVER seen anyone come close to the perfectly executed pirouettes as Mikhail does here in this scene & in that quantity! the epitome of a seasoned Ballet dancer-As far as i'm concerned--No One compares to his talent as a male ballet dancer--NO One~!!
@clgmuir DON'T FORGET THE GREAT PUBBLICITY HE HAD ,AS ALL DEFECTORS ,I SAW LIVE MICHA MANY TIMES AT HIS BEST IN 70'S HERE IN ITALY AND IN LONDON ,AND WAS A FANTASTIC DANCER BUT YURI SOLOVIEV WAS BETTER AND PERSONALLY SAW MANY TIMES LIVE SAT HIS BEST VLADIMIR VASILIEV AND ALSO CONSIDER HIM SUPERIOR.OFF COURSE WE ARE SPEACKING ABOUT SOME MIRACOULOUS DANCERS PROBABILY THE TOP 3 EVER.
It has a special place in your heart and a few milllion more. So inspiring! Thanks to Taylor Hackford, el director, por elegir este guión. Barishnikov forever.
the difference between Baryshnikov and today's hyper-bodied "So you Think You Can Dance" contestants is that Baryshnikov is actually doing pirouettes. SYTYCD dancers are just spinning... what i call the "pull up and pray" method of turning. Baryshnikov is in complete control of each turn, as you can clearly see from his perfect landing. i show this video to my ballet classes!
@landcmg You are completely right. But only people who know what classical ballet is about can mesure the difficulty of what Baryshnykov is doing here.
@landcmg --- out of curiosity, how many students do you get these days who are sincerely devoted to the art, and how many are coming in with dreams of reality television in their heads?
@landcmg Baryshnikov was no doubt great (even by today's standards), but vintage fanaticism is pretty annoying. These turns aren't even technically *that* good and by definition just spinning with legs in a low corkscrew position. Passe leg and standing leg aren't even really turned out and you can confirm this in slow motion if you watch this video from VLC.
@georgeou C'mon--seriously? 37 years old, in street shoes and clothes, and regardless of the turnout the balance is amazing. The only thing more "annoying" than "vintage fanatacism" is armchair criticism. The fanatacism comes from respect of a dazzling career, not just a 3 minute clip in a movie.
@drewqq, I opened my statement saying he was no doubt great (as an artist and dancer) even by today's standards. I made my comment in response to the top rated comment that this turn was somehow technically superior to today's "pull up and pray" dancers. That claim is clearly very ignorant because these are not the most technically superb pirouettes.
I did this at a farmers' market yesterday - only I received pumpkins for my pirouettes. Two pirouettes- two pumpkins. (posted by Paul- 8 year old ballet student at Washington School of Ballet)
These two were great together in this movie. I wish they were able to do a few more together. What a great team and a great movie for me. Thank you Baryshnikov and Hines. RIP Gregory Hines.
......mann...i wanna do ballet like this guy!! this is stuff that motivates me in wanting to become the best i can be!! :)
by the way...i thought swinging ur arms for speed throws ur balance off when u do pirouettes?? isnt it suppose to be a controlled turn?? man...how does he do it!! AMAZING!
@bookkeeper57 i bet its not easy!! how in the HELL can he do that!! i thought throwing ur arms for momentum would throw you off balance ..cause are pirouettes suppose to be controlled turns??
@Nutbuster360 His balance is controlled by his CORE--it all stems from the CORE baby! Get that Core rock solid & U may get close "MAY" is the key.....
@clgmuir ....hmm ok...so alot of hardcore "CORE" workouts right?? like sit-ups and crunches with weights including leg lifts?? will that that get my core rocksolid
