Well, the tunneling for Phase One of the Second Avenue Subway was completed yesterday. Now, the real fun begins: will the phase be done as scheduled or will it fall victim to another financial crisis again?
Congratulations on completing the west tunnel, by TBM, for the Second Avenue Subway. Too bad that the TBM cutterhead cannot be seen opening up the tunnel, but it is great that one half of the tunneling is completed. A repeat performance for the east tunnel is going to be great to see later this year.
MTA, can you make the N train much more accessible to the South Ferry/Whitehall station on weekends? Most of the shuttle buses aren't very reliable when the #1 line can to be cut short whenever there's repairs going on and it has to stop at 14th st.
I doubt any of that will happen. That has been planned for decades, from having the line go to Throggs Neck to having it connect to the IND Fulton Street line via a tunnel under the East River to the Court Street Station (which is now being used by the MTA for the Transit Museum).
Besides, according to the Second Avenue Sagas blog, the first phase of the Second Avenue subway is in trouble. Will it be another repeat of another canceled project, due to financial reasons again?
Well, it seems that the plans for further extensions of the Second Avenue Subway, after Phase FOUR, are going to be in place. I will most likely won't see it happen in my lifetime, but the line has potential to be extended than the 4 phases planned.
@pictureisup1 That's why locals call it "The line that time forgot". The reasons for the line's many "false starts" and delays are numerous and complex.
@DrSurprise - The Q train going to Astoria is just a solution to bring another line there. Once the Second Avenue subway gets underway, hopefully in 2016 or 2017, to 96th Street is complete, then the Q train will go that way instead.
but my guess is that people will complain that one line will now be diverted and if the N is the only line servicing Queens, there will be over crowded trains that the MTA will have to come up with a plan to relieve congestion. idk if this may happen, its just my guess

The MTA , despite all the hype is merely building a stubway.

I think there are provisions to extend the 2nd avenue line into Throggs Neck too.

@DrSurprise - The Q train going to Astoria is just a solution to bring another line there. Once the Second Avenue subway gets underway, hopefully in 2016 or 2017, to 96th Street is complete, then the Q train will go that way instead.
