  • @therealbamlee

Read my comment again, dickhead. I am not disagreeing with you.

The two atom bombs saved many American lives. A land invasion without the two bombs would have cost many more Japanese lives too.

  • I'm Batman!!!

  • @adrianwaj that was a japanese zero

  • A true classic!!! Love this movie.

  • My grandpa once told me that he and some of his friends - given the chance - would have defected from the Luftwaffe to the USAAF just to fly a Mustang once.

Apart from the Ta-152 the most beautyful WW2-plane ever built.

  • @KrautGoesWild fucking liar

  • Christian Bale is so freaking talented. Even at such a young age, his power and talent shows. Amazing.

  • I love this film it makes me well up every time - "I can't remember what my parent's look like..."

  • Call me sentimental...

  • Comment removed

  • They would do this with computers if it was filmed now but it wouldn't look as good...still, we could use a new movie or perhaps tv series about flying...HBO only seems to care about infantry

  • Mustang porn!

  • The Mustang pilots were a father and son team - Ray and Mark Hanna. Both now sadly deceased, they were flying legends. Ray was the inaugural team leader of the RAF's Red Arrows and son Mark flew Phantoms in the RAF. Their legacy is the Old Flying Machine Company, based at Duxford airfield, Cambridgeshire, UK.

  • @19Ron66 ray didn't learn to fly until 1947...

  • @adErsante Troll much? Get your history straight bro.

  • @adErsante The US used the atom bomb to end the war. Japan was already effectively defeated, but didn't know when to stop fighting. They had lost virtually all their outstanding islands and a mainland invasion was inevitable. The atom bomb was used to avoid even greater casualties during a mainland invasion - the majority of which would have been civilians. Believe it or not, the two atom bombs used actually SAVED many more Japanese lives than they killed !

  • @19Ron66 it saved the life of american soldiers, who otherwise would have fallen conquering the mainland of japan. of course on the expense of japanese civil lifes. dont try to justify your countries bullshit

  • @therealbamlee

The USSR threatened to invade Japan.

    Estimated casualties: 5 million

    REAL casualties: 166,000.

I think the Nukes were used to stop WORLD WAR THREE. USSR Invading Europe. Without Nukes, Europe = Defenceless.

Fuck Japan, you're not the only nation out there.

  • @RyanBrooksby Im not even from japan.

  • @19Ron66 Keep believing that and we will never be rid of wars. It was to show the Russians what they weaponry had. People are still dying from the radiation, but keep believing your patriotic life saving bullshit. It's shite like this that people lap up and support invasions of random nations. The world is fucked because you lot are flexing your egos.

  • このシーンは、何度観てもいいなあ。

  • I never heard of this movie. Will definately add it to my war collection.... Great scene!!! Must be a well done movie!!! Thanks for posting.

  • My grand-uncle flew a P-51K during WWII with ROCAF. He said the Chinese never lost a single Mustang to Japanese in Air-to-Air combat. The Ki-43 were totally out-classed, while the Ki-44, 61, & 84 were all rushed into service with tons of unresolved teethning problems, compounded by declining wartime production quality standard. And let's not how the USN subs deprived IJA the fuel needed for pilot training, at a horrrendous cost to of their own.

  • wtf are you going to do with that gun man get on the aa man jesus christ

  • One truly AMAZING thing about this particular video...I don't see one single legitimate troll in the entire comment section, A true rarity indeed; Nice!!!

  • I love all WW2 warbirds, but I'd to say after watching a P-51D flying over my house in Philadelphia as a kid was one of the most awe inspiring events in my life. Such a beautiful aircraft, and the sound its engine makes gives me goose bumps. Still does 30 years later.

  • @johndous1970 Truly an AWESOME comment my friend!

P.S If the 1970 in your username is in reference to the year you were born? It would make perfect sense, because that's when I was.

  • i would have liked it better if it wasn't so centered on the kid..

  • I first heard this line on the speakers at an airshow when I actually saw a p51. Actually seeing one in flight and hearing that engine is the greatest rush I ever felt!

  • Love this movie, and this is the best part

  • Just like "Blade Runner," this was considered a 2 star movie when it was released. Then....through the 90's and to the present time "Empire of the Sun" and "Blade Runner" are very deserving 4 Star movies. It's like as the years wore on, the public and the critics all took second and 3rd looks at these films and realized how truly great they were and are.

  • I always thought the sound engineering in this movie was really good, I mean, a quality and fidelity that isn't really attempted anymore.

  • At 2:43, is that Mustang missing its inner gear doors?

  • My grandfather flew P51's in ww2; I love you gramps!!!

P.s.Who else saw Ben Stiller in this movie and said wtf?

  • @moto1p1 said the same thing when i watched it recently. Btw, that's really cool your gramps flew Mustangs. My gramps was on a destroyer in the pacific, but to fly Mustangs... that's just pure awesome

  • @stang217 That's awesome about your gramps. Anyone who fought in ww2 is a hero of mine! My grandpa was in the pacific theater as well, though I can't imagine anything scarier than being on a warship!

  • @moto1p1 i agree with you my uncle was in Pearl Harbor the day it was attacked and my grandpa was later in Italy with Patton he was a Army guy this movie is so awesome, geniuine and so good priceless a must watch for anyone really who has a heartbeat imop

  • @OEKCVB I talked with a guy who was at Pearl Harbor when it attacked as well. I get pretty crazy on my dirt bike and skydiving, but I can't even begin to imagine the surge of intense fear and excitement those men felt! If your uncle & gramps are still around; please thank them for me. I'd show my grandpa movie clips of WW2 fighters, and he'd explain how they were inaccurate. One day I showed him this, and he said "That's it, that's exactly what our fighter sweeps would look like from the ground"

  • @moto1p1 Uncle Wayman passed away in 77 =( I was 12 he did tell me for about a week they expected Japan to come back and land in Hawaii their were all sorts of rumors that America had already been attcked and had Japanese troops in Washigton DC fightin house to house, off course it was a rumor but my uncle was 18, he said seein the dead bodies, and carnage was horrible. My Grandpa is 94 alive says Army life was awesome and lovd seein Patton and loves the USA and says Obama is gutless lol

  • @OEKCVB Sorry to hear about yor uncle Wayman. You're are fortunate you were able to hear those stories before he passed though! I was only 7 in '77. Your grandfather sounds like a remarkable man. He's definitely tough, still here at 94! And he got to see Patton, old Blood and Guts himself...That's AWESOME!!! Please tell him some random dude on the internet said thank you. Mr gramps died in '04 at age 83. I was bequeathed his medals, Squadron & Air Force patches pics of him w/ his P-51 & stories

  • @moto1p1 Thank you and i will yes he is 94 but he walks every day and stays happy he told me at the end of the war young german boys were running towards them wanting to be captured! it was sad he said many were scared and were told Americans would kill them the German SS were horrible he dealt with them many times the death, he told me he had no trouble eliminating a SS high command because they were murderes of jews and innocent people, he has a pic of him next to Patton its cool pic God Bless

  • @OEKCVB oh the stories. Ones I'll tell my grandchildren. He actually wrote a book about his experiences, (never published) but as well written as any book I've ever read! He flew 65 combat missions 3-in a P-47 Thunderbolt and 62-in aP-51 Mustang...Forever my hero ! ! !

  • @moto1p1 Get that book published! we need that information for the young!

  • @OEKCVB P.S. It's impossible for me to watch this without crying! If anyone out there knows or comes across a WW2 vet; thank them. There won't be an opportunity to do so much longer. We owe them everything ! ! !

  • @stang217 - Late friend of mine flew British Royal Navy Seafires in the Pacific, stood with 3 Air kills over Malaya, one confirmed Oscar fighter, rest of it was ground attack over places like Okinawa with the Combined fleet.

  • That kid was me in 1958...Saw several Merlins at an air show in Amarillo, TX. Man...I was never the same again...

  • i saw this movie when i was almost his age, and i can actually fell his despair and abandon......

  • I always cry when he melts down and talks about his mum. Thank you Christian Bale for this performance! I'm not sure i would let my 13 year old do something like this because it's pretty emotionally intense for a kid. But thank you. P51 Cadillac of the Skies!! Rock on.

  • Easily the best part in the movie.

  • As always, necessity is the mother of invention,

  • Well those Mustangs dealt with those Japanese Harvards in short order, didn't they LOL?

  • @piercethevale For Your information: I just read in Air&Space magazine, that there is (at least there was in September 2010) nine flying P-38's left in the world. Five of them were photographed in the air together in the magazine.

  • That beautiful Merlin is sure distinct!! Gorgeous sound.

  • No more fears kid,the USAAF is there to chase and kill those evil demons who held you prisoner for all those years.

  • Same building explodes at 1:15 and 1:56...

Several scenes are the same filmed from different angles. Not complaining, just observing.

  • @YDDES .. yerr i noticed that but they did it because the actor who plays Jim got it wrong the first time so they shot the scene again when the building was still full of smoke and that :)

  • The Mustangs have no gunsights and no armorplates behind the seats, as can be seen when one of them passes near the camera in slow motion. But, in reality they are probably, as most surviving Mustangs these days, modified to two-seaters.

  • @piercethevale "Hoof" Proudfoot crashed a P-38 during a low altitude roll at an airshow at Duxford in England a couple of years ago. There's a video of the tragedy here on Youtube. Search for "P-38 crash". There's still a very few P-38's flying in USA.

  • @YDDES You are very correct sir. The P-38 Lightnings at first were a very difficult plane to fly. Many pilots died when they first came out. However, after a few hundred hours in them, the WWII pilots were some of the best. But still, I do love the P-51 Mustangs. There were several models of the P-51, but the Mustang was like the old 64 Corvettes. Take care sir, and..thanks for your post..Robert

  • i always cry...right @ 1:30 or so.

  • @djlespommes is a magnificent scene

  • @djlespommes yes i FEEL the same....everytime i see this szene @1:30, teardrops fall....

  • @djlespommes

Glad to hear that. I always thought it was just me. Saw the file 5 or 6 times just to catch that scene.

  • @djlespommes I think there might be something wrong with me if I didn't cry.

  • I called out to Ray Hanna as he was about to depart Binrook in a Mustang, after the filming of 'Memphis Belle'"I hope you give us a flypast" so camera ready, normal takeoff and away..so I waited, but not for long! He came screaming in from behind the end hanger, nice and low, right across the apron in front of the tower...Click..wow.

  • @mmomsboy I agree with you sir. The Memphis Belle was a great movie of true heroes. Most of the B-17 pilots were around 22-24. The 8th Air Force had so many losses. The got shot all to hell, but...a lot of planes made it back to the UK. They are very true heroes. Thanks for your post sir....Robert

  • I'm almost certain the waving pilot is the late Ray Hanna, a former commander of the British exhibition team "Read Arrows" and a great pilot.

  • The pilots flying the Mustangs for the film, Ray Hanna, Mark Hanna and "Hoof" Proudfoot are all gone now. Mark Hanna died in a crash with a "ME 109" (Hispano HA 1112 "Buchon") and "Hoof" Proudfoot in a crash with a Lockheed P-38 "Lightning". Ray Hanna, i believe died in a "natural" way.

  • Goose bumps every time

  • ROAR P51 ROAR

  • I loved this movie so much when I was a kid that I actually evied the character 'Jim'. I was only five when this came out but I've probably watched it a hundred times since then. This has to have been Spielberg's greatest film and Christian Bale's as well. Even though this is a drama it is definetly a guy film. I think every guy can relate to being so wrapped up in something as a boy that even a war can't destract you. And for Jim, that was airplanes.

  • Bale is such a brilliant actor in this. He plays with such integrity. I just fucking feel for that kid.

I love the Victors. They are just so grim. They ground the movie when Jamie's reactions to things are affected by his youth.

  • I remember seeing this in the theatre. Quite a moving film.

    STAY AWESOME! :)

  • wait what? thats a japanese prison camp and its being attacked by mustangs? LOL WHAT? p51's were not used against the japanese. accuracy would make those planes either p40s from china or hell cats / corsairs.

  • @gowill2 Mustangs were being used in the Pacific, just like P-47's, B-24's, etc. They just didn't get the publicity like their European Theater counterparts did. For instance, after Iwo Jima was secured by the Marines, the USAAF stationed some P-51 units there.

In this part of the movie where the Japanese have Kamikazes, it means late WW2. So Allied aircraft freely roaming doing fighter sweeps and such would be perfectly normal.

  • @gowill2 P-51s most definitely were used in the Pacific Theater against the Japanese. The Australians flew them as well.

  • @gowill2

This is not the Pacific Theatre, its the CBI Theatre also known as China, Burma and India Theatre of combat. The markings on the P-51D are of the 118th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron , assigned to the 23 Fighter Group of the 14th Air Force. 118th TRS is famously known as the Black Lightning Squadron, they arrived in CBI in October of 43.

  • Could you please upload the whole movie

  • 1:45 to 1:58 is magical!...did the pilot really see Jim and wave?..or was this part of Jim's aviation imagination?....of course a pilot would never see a single kid in the middle of air combat, let alone wave, but it is just an awesome piece of film-making.

  • @upstart1776 I imagine the pilots waves at the POW camp in general. They probably knew US pilots were held there. He waves at them, as if saying: ''we haven't forgotten about you'' Or maybe the pilot made a fly by earlier and saw the boy on the tower, turning and making another pass to wave at him. anyway, it's just a movie. maybe there is no thought behind it and they just thought this would be a nice scene. Which it absolutely is:D

  • "I can't remember what my parents look like..."

    SAND. IN. MY. EYE.

  • HOSS POWAH!!!!!

In all seriousness , this is a totally underrrated movie and Christian bale does an amazing job in it, especially considering how young he was. He should have gotten an oscar nomination imo. I'm not a *huge* fan of his recent stuff, but i am glad he's doing well in his adult career. :D

  • If you really gave this a thumbs down you need to jump in front of a bus

  • I mean, how stupid is Steven Spielberg? Doesn't he even know the difference between a P-51 and a Mustang? ;0)

  • @jonnybottle making mistakes like that is NOTHING new to the idiots in hollywood. What bothers me the most is when I notice a mistake like that and it ejects me from the movie. I'm not wrapped up in the story anymore. Grrr. Hate when that happens.

  • @richardthewriter Please tell me that you and jonnybottle are just kidding!! The North American built Mustang WAS the P51. It became renowned after it was retrofitted with the British-built Rolls Royce Merlin engine. Put down the pipe and back away slowly.

  • @oriskany No. I'm not kidding. There are tons of mistakes made in movies. Read what I wrote. I'm not agreeing or disagreeing at all with jonnybottle. That was NOT my gripe. My gripe is with all the mistakes in movies that are left in. maybe you should get glasses and carefully read my comment....

  • @richardthewriter Let me make this as simple as possible. Did you or did you not agree that the P51 is otherwise known as The Mustang?

Other than that, I wouldn't know to what you are objecting?

  • @oriskany No. Not at all. I agreed that there were mistakes in movies. I don't know anything about airplanes. I'm objecting to mistakes being left in movies in general

  • One of my favorite parts of the movie...when the pilot waved at him, I couldn't hold back the tears....this was one of the best movies of the '80s, hands down, bar-none!

  • FOR AN AIRCRAFT LOVER IT IS LIKE SIREN SONG....

  • This guy plays batman lmao lol Very young here

  • @TheFighterpilot93 yep. Christian Bale was just 13 when he made this movie.

  • @richardthewriter Lol He looks so different now haha :)

  • magnificent! no cgi here! the music apart from the scene is the most glorius work ever written. i have the cd, i am so glad. williams is the greatest composer ever!

  • HORSE

    POWER

  • bwwahahah around 1:00 the guys with their washing get strafed. Ain't war hell?

  • @louthleviathan maybe you should do some research into former soldiers who were in a real war and ask them how they feel watching people being blown apart or shredded in half by machine gun fire before making silly immature statements like that....

  • @tpioneer

  • what a scene.

  • TREX63 and Kraut and others that don't like the movie and/or scene... Hey guys... it's only a movie about us winning the war over the Japs!!! Are you nuts??? We had to give up the P51Ds and drop a nuke on their ass to make them wake up!!! Did Japan EVER bother us again??? OK... I've made my point!!! This is a great movie!!! ... A great scene!!! That's all!!!

  • Okay, the P-51 was a supreme fighter but I wouldn´t wanna use it as a fighter bomber.

    Not with that liquid-cooled engine.

Anybody got an idea what that Japanese plane in the beginning was, by the way?

  • @KrautGoesWild guessing a zero?

  • skip bombing. it was used in WW2

  • Christian Bale before he wanted to trash your fuckin lights.

  • @Whyavier Hahahaha!!! Good one.

  • My favorite movie scene of time! Spielberg is a genius!

  • The power of a great director like Spielberg and others like him such as David Lean, was they could extricate extraordinary perfomances like these from what may otherwise have been rather more ordinary moments. This five minute scene has it all, and must go down in history as one of the greatest. Well done to all involved.

  • stunning

  • It was not uncommon to drop general purpose iron bombs at low altitude and high speed to skip them into targets. It was done at sea and on land. Sometimes improvised methods of delivering high explosives was necessary. Snake-Eye (high drag bombs derived from para-frags, na-palm was improvised from drop tanks and specially treated gasoline, rebar spikes were welded on to create a big, explosive darts for wooden tressels...etc. and so forth.

  • @bc1969214 0:35 seconds, Mustang drops two bombs from the wings ridiculously low, they're not external fuel tanks.

  • @MitkoChan It's called skip bombing. The bombs are delay fused (they will not explode on impact) and the dropping plane flies low and fast directly at the target. The bombs bounce into the target and then explode, giving great low level accuracy and the bombing plane a chance to escape. It was commonly used in the Pacific war against the Japanese by the Army Air Force

  • @stikpusher I know what skip bombing is, thanks. Skip bombing was done on water, not on land.

  • Lol at them dropping bombs from 5 feet up. As badly researched as the dialogue is cringey. What perfect symmetry.

  • @MitkoChan external fuel tank jettison.

  • @bc1969214 0:35 seconds, Mustang drops two bombs from the wings, they're not external fuel tanks.

  • Im 32 and I still get like that when I see Spits!!!

  • Im 35 and i still get like when i see Me109 and FW190

P51 is a very nice plane also Spitfire

  • They're flying a bit low, imagine if there was some heavy machinegun fire and they were strafing that low?

  • kaboom me thinks

  • just saw it, soo beautiful! goosebumps Is the word. thx for uploading.

  • cadillac of the sky

  • whos the douche that said it made no sense to put P-51 in this film? Shakes head!

  • Tear in the eye time

  • P 51's saved the day in 'Private Ryan' too... 'Angels on our shoulders...'.

  • P-51s were most certainly used in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War Two. The United States Army Air Force used them to escort B-29s! Their incredible range made for some of the longest missions of the war. The P-51 in the Pacific, just like in Europe often went down on the deck to "freelance" once their escort duties had been fulfilled.

  • I remembered this scene when I saw Rescue Dawn and Dieter is talking about seeing an American pilot flying straight down at him when he was a kid in Germany

  • " I can't remember what my parent's look like " that alway's gives me a lump in my throat

  • @nikon005 I'm right there with ya

  • jim's obsessed with planes huh? ahahahaha i love this movie ever. .

  • the p-51 was a fighter on the eastern front (germany) not on the pacific front. it makes no sense that a p-51 is in japan. they should use a hellcat or a corsair. real weak spot of the movie.

  • @snooppupc130jrketmas

Type in P51s in the Pacific in Youtube search and surprise yourself.

  • @snooppupc130jrketmas P-51s were used on both fronts. The army air core flew mustangs, p-38's and P-47's in the Pacific theater.

  • @snooppupc130jrketmas P51's escorted B29's from Tinian Island on missions to Japan. In May 1945 the Mustang equipped 506thth Fighter Group arrived from the States where they had trained for VLR operations. By this time Japanese defenders rarely attacked the B-29s in daylight and almost never engaged the Mustang escorts. Determined to hunt down the enemy air units, the AAF directed P-51 squadrons to begin flying alternate escorts and low-level fighter sweeps.

  • okay ya im more of a navy guy myself.

  • Batman Loves Mustangs!

    (this is greatness)

  • the boy is playing so good.. I've got goosebumps..

  • @Natusia84 you've got goosebumps I can't stop crying.

  • @Natusia84 this little boy grew up and became batman!

  • @Natusia84 - I'm sure this has already been said, but the boy is Christian Bale.

  • @Natusia84 ammm, i think he deserves to be call by his name and not just boy U.u ... Christian Bale

  • very nice music and video good !!!

  • great flick.. my fave

  • love when Jim's talking about how he can't remember his parents..that's some damn fine acting by a young Bale

  • That looks less like a young Christian Slater and more like a young Christian Bale... Actually, just checked it out and it is Christian Bale. Maybe you got 'em mixed up? Anyways, didn't know he had been in film for so long...

  • everybody, please culturize yourself a bit, this is one of the best movies ever made. Davecm008, "this is such a sick scene???", wtf!!!??? havent you seen this movie before to make such a foolish comment you idiot???. Oh, my bad, i guess you and everyone else who made a bad comment about this movie was busy watching the Jhonas Brothers movie.... or whatever tha fuck they are called...

  • @SBT300 this whole movie IS the kid..and he makes it great

  • Never mind! Thanks anyways...On my way to pick up a copy now:)

  • Empire of the Sun.?

  • I read 64 comments...

Now what's the name of the movie?

    Twilight Zone?

Help me out here. I've never seen it.

  • The young boy is Christian Slater at age 13.

  • Comment removed

  • I made a mistake in names! I was thinking Bale but wrote Slater.

  • I was thinking Bale but put down Slater!

  • I won't speak for anyone else, but, for me, at 1:45 this was my dad coming home.

  • what you mean this was your dad coming home? your dad is the pilot?

  • Not the pilot in this scene.

My Dad was an A7 pilot in Vietnam.

He would be away from us for many months on a carrier in the Pacific.

I was merely saying that this scene was metaphorical and emotional in its presentation.

    Not literal, symbolic.

  • this is such a sick scene

  • sweet

  • good job. finally

  • Perhaps the saddest movie ever made. I tears ...

  • sad.... maybe, touching, deply touching for all aviation lovers.

  • I would have done the same if ever this happens to me...
