you should show wat u do mining cause if u find or do something awesome we want to see it. and a bit of advice is to make a small room with a bed inside your mine so if if u gotta stay in there u can. wen u want to leave take the bed out and back with u. if u r in the middle of nowhere & there a monsters dig a 3 block deep hole, cover the top, place a torch, and dig out your hole until it is morning or till u think its safe

1st secure the perimeter second place torches (candels around the whole area) cuz monsters spawn in dark and if you don't have light around monsters will spawn there . Then once you have that don't I would make alot of fences and place them around the perimeter . And what I recomend you to do is collect alot of wood, iron,sand to make (glass) and most important diamonds !!

To sleep you need an inclosed room and monsters not near you. Making an inclosed room should be simple enough, but you need to light the area around you to keep monsters away from you. Torches are the best to do this, even if its raining torches do not burnout so place them everywhere around you about 5-7 blocks apart from another for maximum efficiency (plus you dont need to waste them).

Need anymore advice feel free to ask me or anyone in the comments im sure will tell you a great answer.

Just fill the open space with dirt as a quick fix so you can sleep. Then find more sand/glass. Next you need to get make armor, using cow leather or iron ore so that mobs wont kill you as fast. Then kill spiders to get string to make a bow so that you can kill creepers from a distance. Then once you are well protected it will be safer to mine.

OK mike you should try building a bedroom in the middle of the hill going off your hallway. this should work no matter what. an important tip monsters have a limit on how close they can spawn near you so if you leave your house and come back their will be monsters in unlighted places. i think the limit is 24 blocks away.
