The Kosovo problem didn't start yesterday or in 1999. it started much earlier, basically ever since Albanians started moving into that part of Serbia in large numbers. Being unable or more likely unwilling to integrate, at least to some degree, into Serbian society, Albanians in Kosovo pretty much always functioned as a separate society much like they did in Western Macedonia and Eastern Montenegro. Due to high birth rates the number of Albanians in Kosovo grew constantly...
...and some time during the mid-20th century they became a majority there for the first time. In addition to having educational institutions (including a University) and media in their language all paid and provided for by the Serbian government since 1945, they also had autonomous status within Serbia...
...however, none of this was enough for them as their attitude towards non-Albanians was always hostile. They basically, wanted Kosovo to be Albanian and ONLY Albanian. Things especially intensified after Tito's death in 1980. when they started engaging in semi-terorrist activity, though it still had individual character (car ambushes, killing of Yugoslav Army personnel). Actually there has been very little "classic tit for tat violence" there's been continuous Albanian violence from circa roughly 1961 until 1987 when Milosevic's came to power. Then there was a period of Serbian domination until roughly 1996. The came a US-sponsored KLA guerilla warfare and terrorism and brutal reprisal from Serbian security forces, and finally NATO bombing in 1999. Eversince then there's been nothing but Albanian violence.
Yes I take it back, state-sanctioned massacres by Serbia could not be described as "tit-for-tat" because they were completely brutal disproportionate crimes. Serbia effectively tried to kill their men so as to kill them off.

The Kosovo problem didn't start yesterday or in 1999. it started much earlier, basically ever since Albanians started moving into that part of Serbia in large numbers. Being unable or more likely unwilling to integrate, at least to some degree, into Serbian society, Albanians in Kosovo pretty much always functioned as a separate society much like they did in Western Macedonia and Eastern Montenegro. Due to high birth rates the number of Albanians in Kosovo grew constantly...

I was referring to the majority of Albanians that today populate the Serbian southern province. An overwhelming majority of the Albanians in Kosovo moved there from Albania, especially after the World War II.

So are you telling me that I am wrong to think that Belgrade did not execute mass-killings in Kosovo and that it is completely untrue that its people were amongst the poorest in Serbia due to lack of national infrastructure and investment from Belgrade.

It has only been in the very recent history that this situation has changed, naturally historic wounds are not easily patched. Not all the Basques want to separate from Spain.

Only Albanians in Kosovo don't want to be part of Serbia. Nobody wants to "make them" do anything. Soverign, UN member states have a basic right to territorial integrity. This is fundamental international law. Imagine a world where every guerilla, separatist, semi-terrorist movement gets its wish to take over a piece of land that belongs to someone else - there would be a "new country" every week.

Large number of Albanians moved from Albania into Serbia over the last 100 years and have for at least 50 years tried to take the southern parts of Serbia (Kosovo and Metohija) for themsleves. It's like a neighbour trying to take 15% of your house.

You don't posses basic knowledge of history and you are trying to make some points by insulting people. Check some history book, Albania was on Austrian side during ww1 and during ww2. Serbia had Balkan wars 1912, ww1, ww2, then wars in ex Yugoslavia and then the bombing and still is economically far away from Albania.

Quite clearly Serbia could not guarantee the basic human rights of the people of Kosovo so in that respect they deserve all the independence they can get.
As for UN official recognition - this is not going to happen with the Russian and Chinese vetoes. The UN's very own actions within Kosovo speak for themselves - they have been active in helping them build their own police force.

Actually there has been very little "classic tit for tat violence" there's been continuous Albanian violence from circa roughly 1961 until 1987 when Milosevic's came to power. Then there was a period of Serbian domination until roughly 1996. The came a US-sponsored KLA guerilla warfare and terrorism and brutal reprisal from Serbian security forces, and finally NATO bombing in 1999. Eversince then there's been nothing but Albanian violence.

Yes I take it back, state-sanctioned massacres by Serbia could not be described as "tit-for-tat" because they were completely brutal disproportionate crimes. Serbia effectively tried to kill their men so as to kill them off.
I maintain no qualms in denouncing the violence committed by the ethnic Kosovans but if they were responsible for much of the violence then tell me why the majority of those that actually died were not Serbians but ethnic Kosovans.
