You can't protect yourself from gusts like that. You can't predict them and you can just pray to god that the kite won't lose height too fast. In case of doubt just let the kite go. It's better to pick it from a tree and fall 5 metres than to fall 20 metres. In that case kitekillers would be nice so you can forget the part with the tree :P

But it's obviously safer if you don't kite in winds that you can't handle and to choose a kite that suits to the wind.

Yo nothing was broken or injured except maybe the rib cage from laughing to much....! that particular kite was probably to big for the wind speed but we thought we would give it a go any way....... needless to say that kite never stayed out that long....! the wind speed was about 27mph so way to fast but were always game for a laugh and the guy flying it was probably about 11 stone....sorry there was no info never done you tube before but thought this video was far to good not to share.....!
