I'm not sure on this one, but the HP bonuses of the espers are x%, not of total HP, but how much HP you gained when a character levels up. For example, if Celes equips Stray, and she leveled up and gained 100 HP, Stray adds 10% of that gain, or +10 HP, making a total of +110 HP.

There's a pseudo-cheat you can use to learn some spells quicker.  If equipped with items that teach spells and with an Esper teaching the same spell, their learn factors add. You can thus create Ultima x2 (Ragnarok+Paladin Shield) or Shell x20 (Zone Seeker+ Force Shield).

You'll soon be able to acquire a better curative Esper; and when you do, Kirin won't be as useful as it is.

The elemental shields teach the tier 2 magic x5, which will come in handy if you are a completist as I am.

I don't ever bother getting the Ragnarok Esper. The Ragnarok or Illumina sword is far better anyway; particularily Illumina, despite casting Pearl instead of Flare.
