Lol, not on my asus republic of gamer... currently running crunchbang based on statler. I do think people don't realize how bloated pc prices are simply because of windows OEM fees your paying without noticing.
The phone stuff is useful, but I dont get how they are perceived so much more important than desktop linux. The linux desktop is quite alive and saving many people from ridiculous windoze problems every day. Personally Id rather use a laptop than a tiny droid, although I do have a droid. Maybe its my eyesight, but I think "desktop" linux is handling the heavy lifting required for what I do.
Linux is alive and well because people are being hit by otherwise lose-lose scenarios: 1) Windows 7 OEM is $100 (1/3 the price of the entry level laptops at Best Buy), and 2) That $30 version OSX Lion will not work on those Pentium 4 machines that everyone has.
Linux is a solution that makes an older, yet stable 2+Ghz computer feel like new, especially for those people who do not need multiple core processing for their daily computer usage.
The thing about the cd vs dvd thing is - blank DVDs are the same price as blank CDs now and cd-only writers are pretty much obsolete. However, there is still a big difference between a 750MB download and a 4GB download - so I think theres still a reason for keeping the ISO smaller.
I'm on Linux right now. This is after many, many, MANY years on windows, Why? Because I have never had a truly good experience on windows, it always seems to break. I been going with Linux since early June since windows xp gave me a explorer.exe based BSoD. As of right now, my Linux install is running as good as when I first installed it and feels every bit as stable. Microsoft has probably lost me for at least another year if not two till i feel like trying it again.
Chris - you need to stop cutting Alan off when he's talking...
Also, I doubt that all of the soccer moms out there are gonna understand commands like sudo, wget etc just to get non-synaptic package manager software to work. I think that is Linux's failure. Sure it's great for the tech savvy, but for the regular computer users, it'll be more of a headache than a benefit. As a case study, look at how netbooks failed. People found it to alien, and felt locked in with the default software...
@CMDRSweeper yes I agree with that but I am still concerned with the freedom part of the free and open source software. Debian ensures that slow restriction creep wont be a problem, I am just worried about our Ubuntu cousins who may not care much about restrictions and required-software issues. It would be a sad sad day if Ubuntu which millions "depend" on / are used to get softnapped by corporations. Mankind need a free and open common base computer system including LibreOffice.
Canonical is for profit, companies get bought every now and then. There are concrete guarantees that no amount will buy out ubtnutubutunutuuutbutunubuntu or whatever right? I'd like to read the canonical social contract if only I could find it.
@scientiavictoria Well that is the fun part of OpenSource, Nobody can buy them out, even if the open source project has a company backing.
For one reason, they may buy the company, but the source is out in the wild, so all that will happen is either a fork or a new project will be started, just like LibreOffice and OpenOffice...
Pricetag for Linux is one thing... But my laptop was getting old, it wasn't pulling XP as snappy as my desktop and even a fresh install didn't cure it either.
So... Since I had great success with Linux on my server, I decided to throw it on my laptop.
End result, it became almost as snappy as my Win 7 box that has a SSD, in short... Cheapest upgrade I have EVER done.
i sorta think SOME linux will diebut stuff like Ubuntu and linux mint will definaly stay but the thing is the change sometimes make stuff better but that brings us vista so some changes would be nice in linux OS but not to much like vista or vista and maybe vista
Thank god for Vista, that horrible experience turned me to Linux. Lets hope Windows 8 flops super hardcore. Maybe more people will turn away and go Linux and be much happier.
@kamaboko1 Maybe true. according to my understanding I can download Gnome 2 or another UI. I am not sure how well it would work with latest Ubuntu though because I never tried it before. Right now, I am leaning towards Freebsd.
It's all about advertising. Except Linux users no one knows that a new version of Ubuntu has arrived. Ubuntu must have official (from canonical) Desktop release videos, so that news channels can show. Its only how users are going to know there exists an operating system called Linux. Those videos must contain feature explanations like security, speed, office suite, social aspects, features that makes sense for general users. Only then game and hardware vendors will be more interested on Linux.
My linux desktop is not dead and I'm going to continue to use Linux. The guys also make a great point about "journalists" (I use that term extremely loosely) creating troll articles to gain readers. It's just a desperate article using propaganda techniques by someone who claims that they can predict the future of computing.

While Linux users have been forced to troubleshoot their own shit for years. Your Linux user status will put you on top of the food chain with peoples who are good with mechanics and guns when the shit hit the fan! It especially true if the apocalypse is the Skynet scenario. Skynet will likely be running on Linux anyway.
I'm a windows user and I know how all of my shit works, thank you very much. And I have a decent understanding of how my mac works because of my experience with linux. Nice way to generalize.
Once Linux can run top notch games, ie "Call of Duty" or "Halo 3", and I mean games that are produced for Linux and not just ported over, then, by God, Microsoft had better be very afraid.
@mrbr549 not entirely, still most business would use Windows unless Linux got more advertising out there.
but i agree on the games, I flip flop between trying out linux and giving up when there's nothing really amazing that Windows 7 can't do in one form or another other then Ubuntu's software Manager which is great.
but the real kicker is i game just as much as i do other stuff and Linux is just to annoying in the gaming department elsewise it's a good alternative.
@Spamazoid Games sadly yes, But I have 2 machines one Linux desktop machine where I do most of my stuff and another dedicated desktop machine that runs linux so basically I only go have fun and kill some time on my windows machine...
I think the biggest things that are hurting Linux are ease of use (an area that Linux is making huge strides in) for non-technical users and fragmentation (which has been getting worse) as its hard for a new user to know which distro to use. As of this post, I believe that Linux Mint is the lead for ease of use. I think the real issue overall is desktop OSs in general vs. mobile OSs. I see mobile getting a huge lead but desktops will never fad away.
Even if Windows 8 is a flop, Linux will not make it in the Desktop market... people would just use xp or 7 or wait for an improved Windows 9. We don't have the Gaming or Popular Professional Software titles let alone a Mega corporation to push linux on the Desktop through marketing/products.... And I don't think Canonical has what it takes to make a significant change in the Market although they are trying for it.... but I can see it failing big time for various reasons I have no space for here
I don't think desktop linux is "dead". I think distros like openSUSE and Red Head would (and should) dominate in the enterprise world but honestly I don't think Linux is ready to really compete with WIndows or OSX is the average consumer world for various reasons. That being said, I think everyday linux is becoming more and more of the ideal desktop. As Linux gets more popular more commercial software will be created for it, OSX is experiencing this as of late.
So the desktop I been using since 2004 that I just installed on my brand new i7 is dead. Don't think so for me Linux is been getting better and better every year from Ubuntu to Mint to Mythtv with a bit of Fedora, Debian and Xubuntu I been around the block a few times and am not going anywhere that not Linux based. Well maybe I give FreeBSD a try someday when am bored!
To quote Chris; I'm a bum now. LMAO That shit made me laugh so hard but not having a job doesn't make you a bum. Tell that to the unemployed Americans that were effected by the bad economy.
I think there's a misunderstanding in what "open source" means. Open source projects can be retail products, and closed source projects can be free as in beer. I've been using Linux for a little over a year and a half, and while I've run into problems, and had to learn how to deal with them, it's not *that* big of a deal. If you have a problem, you have a community to fall back on. With Windows/Apple, you have a tech support queue.
i know that Bryan is out of the show, but i just have a question: when he said "sabbatical" did he meant that he wanted to go away from the show fo a while, or in the meaning of "sabbatical year"?
It might be dead if all the different famous distro does not come together and force the developers of software to release there versions of Linux for a single most power distro ever.
Hi! I like the way Allen talks confidently about BSD, so now, i switched and using "PC-BSD", just to see how good it really is. Now, after three weeks of using it, i found it to be really good, and easy to use.
The reason why people develop well designed games and pro software Is because they get paid. They have a duty to make their software as good as possible for the customers to buy their stuff.
And these free and open fanboys does not understand that.
They are like these occupy wall street idiots who wants free money and shit.
@KingHerring I said good software. Not desktop environments.
Look. I love linux just as much as the next guy. But I don't lie to myself. Linux doesn't have anything compared to windows. Linux doesn't have any professional webdesigning software, Flash or video design software. And no, Kompozer is not professional. Flash4Linux is in early alpha or something.
And the best video editor we got is openshot, and that's buggy as hell.
There's no business in linux programming. Only hobby developing.
@blackoutworm That's laughable, there are so many applications.
Video design, novacut is in development and openshot/kdenlive are already great.
You are right, there is no professional webdesigning software, flash, etc. But it's coming.
You're saying there's only hobby development, which is the whole premise of open source! But whose to say that this doesn't produce professional software? Take a look at an RSA animate about the surprising truth what motivates us. The software we have is amazing.
@KingHerring Dude. They are all buggy as hell. You can not rely on them.
Have you even tried any good video editing software lately?
Sony vegas or Adobe Premier are both very good, and so is final cut for Mac.
They are stable and have amazing effects and functionality.
And when you say "it's coming". Is that a dram you have or can you prove it?
Look. As long as there are OS's with better alternatives out there, people are obviously gonna choose them instead of linux. Regardless of what's coming.
@blackoutworm I've used pitivi for simple editing, openshot for generic, and kdenlive once before. I'll admit kdenlive is buggy, but it's improving. All of these applications improve.
Is this a dream, no, open source software improves rapidly and it's growth is exponential. I'm looking forward to elementary OS myself
And no, that's not true. As mentioned in the show Windows 8 might result in failure, and WINE can run SO MANY APPS now. Even my brother (the most linux-hating) said he might switch
@blackoutworm point being that eventually the software will get much better.
For example, development. I find any software development on windows or OSX is extremely inferior to what linux has to offer.
So what about wine you ask? It means people can run their windows software and still use linux applications. But as the user base increases so does the developer base so the quality will increase.
@blackoutworm tweaking is required but most people would just ask their geeky linux friends. Kdenlive is not as far behind as it used to be. As I said, progress.
And what will happen is important, what's happening now isn't. The future will be now, and the results of now will be the future, which is so far positive
Wine works best for lots of games, and support is growing with things such as the humble bundle
Professional software is going web, and theres still professional software either way!
What you fail to understand is unlike Windows and OSX Linux OS are Free. What programs you get in a Linux OS is fucking amazing considering it is FREE. The other non Linux OS have lots and lots of money so yes the programs for those OS are going to be a lot better. The only way Linux is ever going to change that if some of the big Linux OS changed their business model and started charging for the OS. Until then Linux will always be playing catch up to the other two big OS.
@KingHerring Some software are amazing. It all depends on the developer.
If I want to create a professional video, I use either vegas or final cut. Why? Because I want to get shit done without having bugs and crashes all the time. Most people don't care if it's not free. Most people want their software to work. Because most people work, and can pay for their stuff.
People spend time and effort into their projects. And deserve to get paid.
Nomatter how you slice the pizza. OPEN usually means SUCK
@blackoutworm You have yet to give me VALID EXAMPLES of how OPEN means terrible. Tons of great software is open source, as of now you are ill informed and obviously haven't taken a look at the software centre plus all the great apps you'll find from tips sites like omgubuntu! There is just so much waiting to happen.
@blackoutworm That's simply not true. More and more businesses are adopting the open source model.
And most people don't know what ubuntu is, but technical people do, even if they don't use it. It's growing among schools, workplaces, and the IT so it is destined to reach the home, everyday user (where it already has a market share)
And developers make apps to make money? Bullshit, I'm a developer and it's not about money. It's about passion. Look up "The surprising truth on what motivates us"
@blackoutworm You are so right. I did not have an idea Linux Existed, till my dad told me. He said ," son you should try Linux its better then having a coaster you call a labtop." I did and the rest is history. If my dad said nothing,to this day I would still not know what Linux is. It would do wonders if their were commercials to tell people about it. me and my dad have a background in all os systems, but at the time, All I knew about was Windows or Mac.
Linux Mint is absolutely my favorite desktop distribution now... And cheers to Portugal for dumping Microsoft's nonsense and giving open source projects a chance! ;)
Linux based Desktop/GUI is working great for me. I love this stuff.

i know that Bryan is out of the show, but i just have a question: when he said "sabbatical" did he meant that he wanted to go away from the show fo a while, or in the meaning of "sabbatical year"?

It might be dead if all the different famous distro does not come together and force the developers of software to release there versions of Linux for a single most power distro ever.

Hi! I like the way Allen talks confidently about BSD, so now, i switched and using "PC-BSD", just to see how good it really is. Now, after three weeks of using it, i found it to be really good, and easy to use.

PC gaming slowing down is a myth.. Someone needs to put a stop to this.

dead or not, I'm still going to use Arch Linux on my desktop. Screw what the mainstream is doing.
jeffreyparke 4 months ago
Let me tell you guys why linux dekstop is dead.
It's basically because of open source.
Open source sucks. And I've always sid this.
There's not any business in free and open.
The reason why people develop well designed games and pro software Is because they get paid. They have a duty to make their software as good as possible for the customers to buy their stuff.
And these free and open fanboys does not understand that.
They are like these occupy wall street idiots who wants free money and shit.
blackoutworm 4 months ago
@blackoutworm I guess you don't know that companies make insane amounts of money off of FOSS software? *cough* RedHat *cough*
KingHerring 4 months ago
@KingHerring No, and I don't care.
There are still no good software or games for linux.
Linux is 20 years now. Microsoft is 26. Windows became big and awesome after only 5 years.
Why? Because of marketing. They spend money on marketing because they have money.
And because they are successful, then people use their products to make money.
Why do you think Sony and Adobe have amazing software for Windows and Mac?
Money is always the keyword here.
Most free software = crappy beta projects with bugs
blackoutworm 4 months ago
@blackoutworm No good software? Take a look at all the options: kde, gnome3, unity, etc. VERY good software, much more choices than windows or osx.
Linux is 20 years old? I think you mean the kernel. 20 years ago it was a tiny project by an individual, it took time to develop.
Marketing? No. Microsoft had an investment and goal from the start, linux didn't.
And these companies have it because duh, it's 90% of the overall market.
And no, free software is usually quality unless you use unstable.
KingHerring 4 months ago
@KingHerring I said good software. Not desktop environments.
Look. I love linux just as much as the next guy. But I don't lie to myself. Linux doesn't have anything compared to windows. Linux doesn't have any professional webdesigning software, Flash or video design software. And no, Kompozer is not professional. Flash4Linux is in early alpha or something.
And the best video editor we got is openshot, and that's buggy as hell.
There's no business in linux programming. Only hobby developing.
blackoutworm 4 months ago
@blackoutworm That's laughable, there are so many applications.
Video design, novacut is in development and openshot/kdenlive are already great.
You are right, there is no professional webdesigning software, flash, etc. But it's coming.
You're saying there's only hobby development, which is the whole premise of open source! But whose to say that this doesn't produce professional software? Take a look at an RSA animate about the surprising truth what motivates us. The software we have is amazing.
KingHerring 4 months ago
@KingHerring Dude. They are all buggy as hell. You can not rely on them.
Have you even tried any good video editing software lately?
Sony vegas or Adobe Premier are both very good, and so is final cut for Mac.
They are stable and have amazing effects and functionality.
And when you say "it's coming". Is that a dram you have or can you prove it?
Look. As long as there are OS's with better alternatives out there, people are obviously gonna choose them instead of linux. Regardless of what's coming.
blackoutworm 4 months ago
@blackoutworm I've used pitivi for simple editing, openshot for generic, and kdenlive once before. I'll admit kdenlive is buggy, but it's improving. All of these applications improve.
Is this a dream, no, open source software improves rapidly and it's growth is exponential. I'm looking forward to elementary OS myself
And no, that's not true. As mentioned in the show Windows 8 might result in failure, and WINE can run SO MANY APPS now. Even my brother (the most linux-hating) said he might switch
KingHerring 4 months ago
@KingHerring Sure software improve. No duh, as long as they are in development.
People don't mind pay for good stuff, because most people have a job.
Also, you went through video 3 editors I've tried. None of them are very good.
Buggy or not, they still need to improve to be as good as the paid software.
And they still don't have the cool and amazing effects
Wine can run a lot of things. So what? We are talking about Linux developed software here. Wine stuff is still developed for Windows users.
blackoutworm 4 months ago
@blackoutworm point being that eventually the software will get much better.
For example, development. I find any software development on windows or OSX is extremely inferior to what linux has to offer.
So what about wine you ask? It means people can run their windows software and still use linux applications. But as the user base increases so does the developer base so the quality will increase.
It's not unlikely and definitely will happen.
KingHerring 4 months ago
@KingHerring Wine is good when it comes to older stuff, yes.
I have yet to run any video editing software under wine.
And another thing is that Wine is a workaround.
I hate workaround and tweaking, and so do most people.
Tweaking is a hobby thing for pc interested people.
And you always bring up what will happen. I don't care what will happen. We live now, we talk about now and today's technology.
In today's world, no cool games and no professional software have yet been developed for linux.
blackoutworm 4 months ago
@blackoutworm tweaking is required but most people would just ask their geeky linux friends. Kdenlive is not as far behind as it used to be. As I said, progress.
And what will happen is important, what's happening now isn't. The future will be now, and the results of now will be the future, which is so far positive
Wine works best for lots of games, and support is growing with things such as the humble bundle
Professional software is going web, and theres still professional software either way!
KingHerring 4 months ago
@blackoutworm
MrStephen182 3 months ago
@MrStephen182 I don't fail to understand anything
And yes. The software are good considering it's free. But that's also where linux fails to grow bigger.
The question was "Is desktop linux dead?", so there you have your answer. It's not dead nor dying.
Companies sell their PCs with Windows because that's where the money is.
Antivirus software, MS Office and all that crap costs a lot of money. But linux is free, so they have nothing to win there.
So if linux is dying, it is because it's free.
blackoutworm 3 months ago
@KingHerring Some software are amazing. It all depends on the developer.
If I want to create a professional video, I use either vegas or final cut. Why? Because I want to get shit done without having bugs and crashes all the time. Most people don't care if it's not free. Most people want their software to work. Because most people work, and can pay for their stuff.
People spend time and effort into their projects. And deserve to get paid.
Nomatter how you slice the pizza. OPEN usually means SUCK
blackoutworm 4 months ago
@blackoutworm You have yet to give me VALID EXAMPLES of how OPEN means terrible. Tons of great software is open source, as of now you are ill informed and obviously haven't taken a look at the software centre plus all the great apps you'll find from tips sites like omgubuntu! There is just so much waiting to happen.
KingHerring 4 months ago
@KingHerring Not terrible. But it's the reason why linux isn't growing
Open means no commercializing. Why do you think most people don't even know what ubuntu is?
Or any of the linux games for that matter.
We all know what Windows is and what iPod and macbook is
That's why people use these products.
Sure more people would use linux operating systems if they knew about them.
How can you Not see that?
Developers build good games and software to make money. Not to please the greedy people for free.
blackoutworm 3 months ago
@blackoutworm That's simply not true. More and more businesses are adopting the open source model.
And most people don't know what ubuntu is, but technical people do, even if they don't use it. It's growing among schools, workplaces, and the IT so it is destined to reach the home, everyday user (where it already has a market share)
And developers make apps to make money? Bullshit, I'm a developer and it's not about money. It's about passion. Look up "The surprising truth on what motivates us"
KingHerring 3 months ago
@blackoutworm You are so right. I did not have an idea Linux Existed, till my dad told me. He said ," son you should try Linux its better then having a coaster you call a labtop." I did and the rest is history. If my dad said nothing,to this day I would still not know what Linux is. It would do wonders if their were commercials to tell people about it. me and my dad have a background in all os systems, but at the time, All I knew about was Windows or Mac.
