We can speculate that it might have started as a detective's casebook in a comic, then people liked Batman so much, the whole comic became known because of him. If its gonna come down to an actual battle... Superman would easily fly and orbit the Earth, track down Batman with his super sight/X-ray vision, shoot his heat vision down on Batman, hold it down til he burns Batman into dust, and burns down a 6ft hole, so Batman can rest in pieces. No way would Batman have a chance at using the "green rock". This battle would suck because there would be no suspense to it.
