Thanks for posting this video. I love Michelangeli's interpretation of the Beethoven concertos as well as his many other piano performances. I have this CD and always marvel how beautiful the music is everytime I listen. He is a true artist and the sounds he made from the piano is unbelievable.
I have this CD.... it was one of the biggest musical influence of my life... I have heard this concerto hundreads of times! No words... a dream interpretation!
The claim that Michelangeli did not play "spontaneously" is rubbish. That he was ultimately prepared and that fingerings were all in order should be the norm for ANY concert artist. It was instead the facility which he showed, the control, the touch, plus a wonderful sense of line that left people--especially pianists--dumbfounded.
He was an enigma. Plenty of people play all the notes, but then there is the serenity, light and communicativeness that is Michelangeli. Those who heard him live--!!
Thanks...I had this piece years ago and my hard drive crashed with my entire collection...Never mind the quality of the video...the performance was superb...
My good man, if you're the sort who cannot even tolerate this kind of recording quality (which is actually quite tolerable, considering...), then I'm sorry to say that you're cutting yourself off from a large portion of the greatest musical testaments in the history of recorded sound.
A fascinating performance this one is, by the way.
This is a really amazing performance; too many great pianists seem to just take this movement much too seriously and technically and usually the strength needed in this piece is lost. This is a rare exception. Another favorite of mine is Arrau/Klemperer, the sheer power of it is amazing, but this is another one of my favorites. Could you please post the other two movements? Thank you for this one, though.
perhaps too perfect. Not technically, but musically. It is too polished. Michelangelli was famous for never improvising on the stage but having every single detail thought-out and planned. Not as spontaneous and energetic as the russian folks
He plays simply great!!
