Wow. Excellent playing and taste. Smooth, close-to-the-keys fingering. Calm posture, but not too stiff. (No fun to watch organists either wobble like a pillar of jello, or stiff up like an iron column.) First-rate in every way. Now let's get you over to Metz - you already have the reverberation time figured out!
Whatever your musical goals are, you are certainly worthy of becoming the next Tabernacle organist. Organ aficionados want to hear you live on a real pipe organ! Thanks for sharing your wonderful Hauptwerk recordings.
Rob, you are a class act! Appreciate your videos but more so your playing. Do you have any CD's out which can be purchased? Or would you consider burning one with a medley of your You Tube and Contrabombarde pieces? Many thanx for your participation.
this is amazin..nice performance.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..could you tell me what you mean by "virtual Organ" Is it the same as digital organ???...if not...where could I find information about it...cos its sounds so great....
I enjoyed this piece very much. I like the way and tempo you play it. In my opinion it is many times played much to fast. The charm of the different melodies is than lost. Is there a way of downloading this file ? It didn't work on the contrabombarde-link.
@dieselheart001 Hardware (Manuals, Pedalboard, etc.) by Classic Midi Works. The software is called Hauptwerk, and can be found at hauptwerk (dot) com. One would need an audio interface, and a midi interface. Touch Screens are utilized to emulate stop jambs. There are many, many, many different instruments which have been recorded and turned into sample sets for Hauptwerk. With this system you can have a Cavaille Coll, a Modern American organ, a Baroque German organ, a harpsichord... Limitless
@dieselheart001 and it's almost certainly going to be cheaper than a small digital organ from most leading makers. You should download the free version of Hauptwerk from the Hauptwerk website- it's a good introduction, and comes with a free Organ, a 2 Manual 30 speaking stop English Instrument from St Anne's Moseley
@bagnewauckland Thank you for the information on the manuals and pedal clavier. Classic MIDI Works does make outstanding items. I am using five Conn 700 series manuals, and a 32 AGO pedal clavier from a model 720. Two manuals, and the pedal clavier have a special optical second touch feature I adapted from a previous Gulbranson design. I am using Artisan MicroMIDI components for the MIDI interface and the Lenovo/Hauptwerk Basic/m-Audio desktop I mentioned previously. Did you read it?
@dieselheart001 I did indeed read it, and was hoping to provide information to others who read it. As for Rob's computer, I believe he is currently using a Mac Pro. I'm not sure about the specs of it, though. Good luck with your setup!
Well, this is somewhat disappointing. Two months, and no reply? Perhaps you are quite busy. Or possibly this instrument is truly a proprietary secret? I certainly can appreciate that. Perhaps it was built for you. Then, explanation of its assemblage and fitting would rest with someone else. I beg your pardon for asking what I did.
I will find my answers elsewhere. However, as I prepare and finish my instrument, I will enjoy sharing
with all who may ask about it, freely, with great pleasure.
Believe it or not, this magic is all done on computer, using a specialized software called "Hauptwerk", and digital sound files- this one is the Cavaille-Coll organ of
Notre Dame de Metz. Using a special high-quality sound card the organist can connect not only high quality audio amplifiers and speakers, but also the manuals and pedal clavier, built by a specialty builder of MIDI components for organs. The monitors on either side display information about stops used and other organ information.

@JoelTrekell : A lamp under which one can live out any phantasy one wants. If you wish to be a cathedral organist, Y NOT ! If you wish to be the pope : Y NOT ! If you wish to grow wings and fly : Y NOT ! Even pigs find The Lamp so kool : PIGS MIGHT FLY !
Rob, You are such a brilliant player with beautiful technique and sensitive fine musicianship. Just outstanding!!! Where do you play, teach, concertize???
Many thanks for the compliments, MicksFlics. Most of my public playing is done for various church meetings. I do play at bi-annual student recitals, but have yet to take on any students.
Have you taken measurements in order to make sure of the height of the organ bench, the distance between pedals and manuals and the distance between keyboards?
What about mechanical resistance to your touch?
(Actually I wonder if ergonomically speaking your music desk isn't too low for you and the lowest keyboard too close to your body).
i would also like this stuff...it looks as though that you could add as many manuals as you what in theory...it all looks expensive for sure. we just gutted out an old rodgers at my school and made it into a hauptwerk, but we did not get dry samples and it's kind of annoying...
Nice performance. I assume that you are using Milan Digital's Notre Dame de Metz Cavaillé-Coll organ. That set has only the Swell pedal (Recit Expressif ) for volume control. I think that is all you used for the dynamic range in your performance, however, if you somehow added another swell within the Hauptwerk program, please tell us how you did so. Also, could you please tell us your stop and coupler list for this performance?
Yes, I am using MDA's Metz sample set for this performance. There has been no special tweaking to the sample set, so I only used the one swell pedal. Posting the registrations for the performance would be prohibitively verbose, but I can tell you that they're pretty straight Cavaille-Coll registrations as indicated by Vierne.
good performance. this one and the video of diane bish playing this piece are easily the best two performances on youtube. how does one go about getting an organ like that? if you could give me some information about them id appreciate it. great performance again!
Rob, A very well played piece on an amazing intrument. I was looking for this piece when i found this video and love it. I am now obsessed with this midiworks console. Is the Notre Dame organ the biggest in the Hauptwerk set? It sounds great!!!
I see a ferocious air battle in my mind whenever I hear this piece. Red Baron bi-plane era...it would make a great accompaniment to a silent, black and white film. Also, you should have shown that wonderful pedal run at the very end.....
Cool. I hear Napoleon crossing the Alps on horseback, updated later to trains, and airplanes doing manouvers! Truly a scenic travel piece, and a picture of the momentum of modern times.
The speaker system in the video is 2x Cerwin Vega speakers + Klipsch sub. I have since changed it to be 6x Definitive SM450s + Definitive SuperCube III.
In any case, what you are hearing in the video is the computer streaming the audio directly to a WAV file so as to avoid an unnecessary analog/digital conversion.
Great performance! I'm pleasantly surprised how good the Haupwerk setup sounds. There's nothing quite like having a Cavaille-Coll (almost) in your living room!
Great separation and articulation in the runs. Sometimes they are performed so muddled. Love the wait on the last chord. Very musical and effective. Rob just keep getting better and better. Yours, Jim
Excellent! It is amazing how good that hauptwork is. I hope you will record a large number of church hymns for us to enjoy. Could I possibly ask the cost of your "console"?
This recording sounds amazing. You possess full measure of a gift of which I received only a tiny taste. I posted a few audio recordings I made on a small Allen digital pipe organ and got punished, not for my obvious lack of talent, but for the sound of the instrument. Cavaille-Coll samples are superior to American post horns, but I think my recording techniques are more at fault.
Hi, thanks for the compliments! One of the reasons I have so much fun making these recordings is that I can directly record using the computer rather than trying to use my camera's cruddy microphone. The result is usually pretty good. I totally know how it is to be frustrated by poor recording equipment (check out my very first video for a good example :)
Dear accousticdecay, yours is a good electronic organ, decidedly superior to many others. It plays very well despite the quality of youtube. Compliments for your performance. Tuttiorgan probably knows few the cats and nothing the electronic organs. Five great stars.

You may yet become a Tabernacle organist: you have an incredible gift; a talent: an inner musical sense that is rare: your coming on here and sharing it with all the world is wondrous: You feel everything inside like Bach surely must have.
Rob - another beautifully done performance. Reading the comments from larryocca, I too hope you are playing in public on a pipe organ. Nothing against electronics but...
Keep up the posting of your work;I enjoy your playing so much. Ray.
Rob - that was beautifully played. It was clean and clear and very musical. I thought that you also played well for the accoustics (electronic). I sure hope that you're getting opportunities to play large pipe organs with wonderful accoustics. Your digital instrument is very nice but you're so talented, it needs to be heard in public on an amazing instrument!
Thanks Larry. On very rare occasions I get to sit down at a great pipe organ and hammer out a few notes, the rest of the time, my digital organ gets the job done.
Great performance. The setup you are playing on is very intriguing. Seems to sound better than any Rodgers or Allen digital organs I've heard. Anyway keep up the good music!
