Dachau...Auschwitz ....There faces dont look hubled they just look scared

  • Brilliant...just Brilliant...hes to music what J. D. Salinger is to writing..you find it brilliant but you dont know why....

  • Leonard Cohen, what a BOSS.

  • This voice, has the BALL!

  • people get sooooooooo angry about a song.. i understand that this is the original but i prefer jeff buckly's version... its not that i dont like this one.. and i think Cohen is sooo talented, especially for writing the song in the first place, but i just prfer Buckly's arrangement.. its more my 'type' of music

  • Dear people saying other peoples covers are better.

He MADE this amazing song. He wrote the lyrics, the melody, the chords, the harmonies, the beat, the rhythm, everything. Other people are copying it. It's like saying a replica of someone elses piece of art is better than the original. It's not.

    Leonard is amazing.

  • how dare people who upload other versions of this call it "official". it's bollocks.

  • It is the definitive version of this song, imho.

  • Listen to Jeff Buckley's version and enjoy - check.

Find out the song is a cover - check.

Go to original's version to expect to see people bitching - check.

    People bitching - check.

Oh YouTube commenters, sometimes you are too predictable. :)

  • There's something new in Cohen's version in the last few years. He seems to sing with the sorrow of an old man who knows he'll never experience the exquisite agony of love again. It's sublime.

  • All The covers are good, but this one stays the best.

  • thanks leonard

  • song is big time bullshit.bullshit.bullshit

  • song is big time bullshit

  • I typed in Hallelujah in on YouTube, and when I did I didn't want to see fucking Alexandra Burke. I want to see this.

  • his voice is shocking !!!!

  • better the one maded by Jeff Buckley

  • @PhilDstr the one maded by jeff buckley is just a cover. it's known: copies never reach originals ;)

  • 0:25 : 21 people do not really care about music ):

  • Leonard Cohen, is a poet. But he talks in a melodic tone when playing this song. But I like it.

  • 1:10 - 1:27 The sax is just realizing that is is playing for the greatest bass voice of all time.

  • Thanks SME for posting this original video and let us enjoy the version from the man who worked several years on this song to get it right. There are some good covers from others, but nothing beats the original!

  • "It is written in the Holy Qur'an that God granted the Land of Israel to the Children of Israel and ordered them to settle therein (Qur'an, Sura 5:21) & that before the Last Day He will bring the Children of Israel to retake possession of their Land, gathering them from all different countries & nations (Qu'ran, Sura 17:104). Consequently, I believe that opposing the existence of the State of Israel means opposing a Divine decree." - Sheik Abdul Paleizo, Imam of Rome

  • fantastic voice! fantastic music!

  • fantastic voice! fantastic music!

  • poetry

  • Fuck me this is perfection!

  • @WillShakespeare2007 yes it is perfection, if you are blind and deaf

  • Wauw!

He still has his great voice!

  • @poplova FU. I got chills this man is BANGTIDEHHH.

  • @poplova you'll never become a famous music critic by being tone deaf, but you might just get it for being nasty and talking a load off shit..

  • @bryson1962 i'm sorry for how this is gonna sound, but some "artists" need to know when to retire gracefully. madonna is one of them, this shrivelled up "person" is another

  • @poplova I guess you're entitled to your own opinion, but look back at the last few seconds of the video to see how many people disagree with you. ;)

  • the guy lookes like he's about to have a heart-attack on stage. i'm sorry for saying this, but the writer doesn't make the song a hit, the singer does. i don't care if this guy wrote it, alexandra made it a massive hit

  • @poplova its been a hit many times fool, jeff buckley, rufus wainwright and cohen himself. When alexandra sang this 4 different versions of the song hit the uk top 100. This means plenty of people heard her sing it then remembered another version that they thought was better and went out and bought that instead. But no, you're right alexandra burke deserves ALL the credit.

  • @poplova Just because he's older now and might move more slowly that doesn't mean he's about to drop dead. And yes, he CAN sing. Perhaps not in a way that pleases you, but he can sing. A singer who doesn't write their own material has nothing without songwriters. The writer creates and allows the singer to have a hit. Alexandra only had a hit with Hallelujah at all because the song is so beautiful. Has she had any hits since? Serious question, as I don't know.

  • @hennaG2 yes she has, she's had at least 3 others. bad boys, all night long, and start without you

  • @poplova idiot

  • @poplova I'm sorry, but without Leonard Cohen we would be minus this song in our world! And i'd like you to introduce me to someone who has such a deep and unique tone to their voice as he does! He is a talent. An amazing talent.

And if anyone "made this song a hit" it was Jeff Buckley! Not Alexandra Burke. All Alexandra made was another piece of manufactured x factor s**t.

  • MERAVIGLIOSA!!!!

  • Forget Rufus, forget Alexandra, forget all the others this is the only true version. And 16 people are deaf.

  • @bryson1962 the joke is people like you. people say what a great voice this guy has. he can't sing to save his life.

  • @bryson1962 i'm glad that i have no fucking clue of who is rufus or alexandra.

  • @railander Rufus Wainwright, Alexandra Burke

  • @Cohenova and yet i have no fucking clue of who they are :D

  • @bryson1962

The interpretation by Jeff Buckley is as good as the original if not better.

  • @bryson1962 great song

  • I'm 34 and I'm fan from I was 15! Amazing songs and a unique personality. Keep it up,Leonard!

  • @bryson 1962 ; indeed! LC is de enige die je de emoties en pijn kan laten voelen in dit lied (I try: nobody can let you feel the emotions and pain in this song as the master himself!!!!!)!

  • The best version ever................ the original and the master.

  • The orignial is always the best!

  • is not important how technically well you play or sing, and this man, putting all of himself in what he does, shows that. He makes vocal mistakes, his voice will not sound beautiful to everyone (like Dylan's), but he gives it all, even if few people know that this song was composed by him; Jeff Buckley's beautiful cover is much more popular, and Rufus Wainwright's (or should I say about Shrek's?) version, sung all in the same way and adding almost nothing to Buckley's cover, is more famous.

  • the rawness of this song gets to me every time, i love this song

  • it touches heart....we will have this song as a wedding song to walk down the aisle..so intimate

  • @virtualcircus well said...but if you do, leave out the second paragraph....the one with Delilah and Samson's reference..:)

  • his voice is wonderful I hve never heard him before Thank You Roberta Kray X

  • Laughed so hard when this song popped up during the sex scene in Watchmen.

  • i like to listen to an old man songs.... cause he mean every word from his heart!!!

  • My Dads favourite song and mine.. We had it played at his funeral and it broke my my heart

  • Listen this is a song for lord jesus he never died he lives foreverin us !Peace .

  • @rinotrip Ehrm, no.

  • @rinotrip It's a song for God. הללו יה (Hallelujah) can be translated as praise G-d

  • @bazzo9 it's not only God..it's basically a romantic song with numerous Biblical references like Delilah and King David..

  • This is used in Watchmen where Nightowl II and Silk Spectre have sex

  • @clashrogers

    wow you're a smart one.

  • Love the organist!

  • maestro..

  • wow what a voice. This is the first time that I listen this singer and I like the way he sings! It makes me fell also like I'm leaving that moments wow!

  • Leonard wrote this song, he adds new verses, he has developed it over many years, and he is the only one really in touch with the emotions that are contained in his words....I rarely enjoy covers, for obvious reasons, as i so respect Leonard, but if there is one I do enjoy, it is that by fellow Canadian and friend, KDLang

  • this song sounds so unique to different people, i like everyones covers except alexandra burkes why did she feel like she had to drag every note out longer

  • I actually much prefer Leonard Cohen's own recording to Buckley's cover. Cohen's voice fits this song so well...

  • Is he really a singer? He has no voice at all!

  • @bzkaa You kidding ?

He has an amazing voice, and there is real emotion in it.

  • watchmen sex scene!!!!!!!

  • Lyrically, this guy is probably amongst the best in history. Personally, I don't find his voice very listenable, but you have to respect him as a huge positive influence to music.

  • jeff buckley wins :/

  • @muscleman242 Not at all.

  • my fave version hands down <3

  • The Best Song Ever!

  • simply perfect. no more comments.

  • Grazas Leonard polo recital en Vigo

  • The Man

  • The woman with the hat is kinda hot btw.

  • he is a genius id love to see him play with bob dylan

  • Goosebumps every time I hear him sing this. It has some sort of emotion that other covers completely lack.

  • @SuperHollieeeX This isn't actually a cover; Leonard Cohen originally wrote and sang this song, all the others are covers. Still, amazing song... *goosebumps*

  • @MmerryDdeath I know he wrote it, I meant the covers of the song other people had done. Not that this itself was a cover. ;p

  • LOVE IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • is that drummer john travolta?

  • they should employ this guy for pendulum, he can be the bass :P

  • tov meod...yafah... linda!!!!!!!!

  • 18 people not watch shrek!

  • The original singer and writer of Hallelujah, fabulous!

I dnt find any imperfections in his singing, not any at all...thats his style- it's folk music-ish.

  • @wisemaninmadworld There just are imperfections. There's no doubt people like Lady Gaga sing better. But the thing with real musicians is that they don't need to sing pure. They need to sing with passion, and that's a skill that a lot of modern-day singers don't master.

  • The original singer and writer of Hallelujah, fabulous!

  • Alexandra Burke's version has lost all of the original's power and story line - it's just a forgettable pop song. Long live Leonard Cohen.

  • Oh My Goddness... is he died??? He sings as an undead...

  • @Dallecharmed93 no, thankfully, he is still alive. it should be a shame for music like this when he's dead

  • @ArtistfulRival ahaha I was kidding... I mean that he has a "strong" voice and his voice is like a undead man... xD Obviously I am kidding... i love this song... <3

  • I really love this video... Thank you very much...K

  • Fuck me....I've been doing Edmund Cull a misjuctice all this time..I thought he

just tortured the staff and lost tourists at Corals in Harrow Road with this sort of shit...I wished I'd known other ponce Fuckers would have been taken in by it...I could have made a mint.....Cull really is a fucking legend

  • Looks and sounds like Edmund Cull from Harrow Road....Thanks fuck Burke did it justice.

    ....26-2-1935...12-12-21010+

    mis you

  • he's very cool

  • Goosebumps.

  • I overheard sompeople at our school arguing over this song.

my friend was arguing that this version was So much better.

    and it is.

they thought Alexandra Burke's version was better.

i started laughing at them when i heard that.

they said "eeh nooh shut up did you take GCSE Music?"

    i said no

    then they say "exactly"

    Lol

  • Love it!

  • thanks god to have created LC

  • Good Grief!! If he can become famous for singing, then there's surely hope for me!!

He may be the 'Original' but give me kd lang any time ...

  • @Hey0G0 he's not famous for singing. he's famous for what he sings. one of the greatest songwriters you'll find. so if you can match that, you too may have a chance at getting away without being a great singer.

  • @Hey0G0 You've obviously never heard blues, jazz or swing. Especially the latter. The singers sound very much like Cohen.

  • WOW!! Makes me feel like no other Hallelujahs. This is Hallelujah the way it's meant to be

  • WOW!! Makes me feel like no other Hallelujahs. This is Hallelujah the way it's meant to be

  • Goosebumps.

  • how can you say leanord cohen is untalented he is a legend just like tom waites instruments themselves..great blues singers...

  • There is only one right word for this: wow

  • 944 sing with me :"hallelujah, hallelujah,halleluja"!!!

  • This is the world`s greatest living poet His truth and passion are unequalled, his expression of love unparalleled on this planet.Hallelujah! Hallelujah!Hallelujah! hallelujah!

  • he is great artist!

  • This song brings hope to people like me, that can't sing! Thanks Leonard!

  • Is he jew?

  • @yuval3010 He is, Yes.

  • @yuval3010 נראה לי

  • Can't understand how 16 people didn't like this

  • @Txorly i can't believe it either...what's there in this song to dislike???

  • @sullivanandlithium I don't know, it's impossible for me to understand :(

  • @Txorly Probably spiteful Buckley fans who realized that the original was the best.

  • @Nogli Actually for the record, my favorite studio recording of it is Buckley's, but Cohen's live recordings blow them all out of the water.

  • @Nogli you're right... I love Buckley's version, so clean and emotional, but this rough version by Cohen is so suffered...

  • He is as towering a performer as was Sinatra...he isn't there for the band...they are there for him.

  • LEFT ME SPEACHLESS

  • is he singing jeff buckley's words? :/

  • @JD0NNELLY other way around

  • @mufc187 Yeah i know its his song but i didn't think the original had the bit about the chord at the beginning? I'm probably wrong though dunno

  • @JD0NNELLY yeah, it did.

  • What an amazing, deep, velvet voice...

  • Comment removed

  • prachtig, dit is pas muziek

    lisette

  • Absolutely amazing.

  • leonard is so cute hahah i love this person..he is a great singer and a grat jew!! :P

  • Leonard Cohen's voice is fantastic, as is the organ solo at 3:15

  • Really tremendous..A artiste top of his class!! Beautiful.

  • it's the imperfections in his singing that make this piece of music amazing. It's raw and real, unlike some refined studio polished version.

    ...Perfect as it is.

  • @Gabriella2506 May be true, but Rufus Wainwright's version has the same ammount of emotion but is much better IMO

  • Sorry, but i think it's not the best cover, even if it's the original...

But i love his voice, and yes he has a soul...

(sorry for my english i'm french...)

  • I respect the man....but I sorry to say I find it boring, I find Alter bridges or Jeff Buckley version

  • Singer with a soul

  • just saying, Jeff Buckly's version is much better. But I have respect for this guy because he wrote it.

  • @SomeKindOfKirk You Are Right The First time i heard this song it was On shrek after that I heard it a few times on the radio then I listened To Bon Jovi's version and now i can play it by myself!!!

  • I cried when I saw this live.

  • his version has the most insperation and he tells the story better than anyone in the world! his voice makes everyone think about the song and while the other singers maybe sing well but they cant tell the story like he does

  • @gkidcj -Well he did write it.And wtf is up with SomeKindOfKirk's comment about cohen being the most untalented singer?Cohen is one of the musically and lyrically/poetically talented people your ever likely to lay eyes on.

  • @ahenderson666 haha well my last name is Cohen lol but ofcurse i know youre talking about him ;)

  • @ahenderson666 he meant untalented at singing; seriously it just is annoying listening to this rather than un-beautiful.

  • @lovefight1136 Does not annoy me...

  • @ellbo2 .... never said it annoyed YOU..gosh. i said it's annoying listening to it ( for me)What ? can't i have no opinion?

  • @lovefight1136 Woah! Did not mean to annoy or offend you, of course you can have an opinion, im not a dictator.

  • @ellbo2 Singer with a soul

  • Tahle píseň nutí k zamyšlení a v podání Leonarda je to Úplně nej Super

  • Jeff Buckley's version is PERFECT

  • 14 dislikes!!!! wtf u messes. original is the best

  • I am sorry but i find the version of Lisa - hallelujah way more beautiful its almost like He talks but then again hes way older i guess

YET i still find this beautiful.
