My main disappointment was that Alice dumped the "garage band" sound of the last two albums. Yes, Alice did "try too hard" on this album... but since these reviewers loved the mediocre "Roses on White Lace," I'm surprised they weren't thrilled with this album.
"Vengence is Mine" is praised, but c'mon... it's loved for Slash and his guitar, not for Alice!
I think my word for the album is "uneven." Inconsistent. One great classic feel alice song would be "In Touch With Your Feminine Side."
I think Along Came A Spider is a great album. It's not his best but not his worst either, just a solid rock album. I think it has great songs and the concept is brilliant.
And just for the record, Trash is Alice's second best album. There is no other album that I have more fun listening to than Trash. Pure melodic hard rock at it's finest.
You're right, alice kinda failed in his latest album or two. the music and the lyrics are nowhere near as good as fis earlier masterpieces. However, one thing you must know is that Alice Cooper was never about the albums he releases. It's all about the stage show. alice cooper could sing britney spears songs and he'd still put on an amazing show.
You have a fair point. On Alices standards Along Came A Spider was poor but you have to remember that this is a 60 year old man trying to get that little more creativity out of his heart. And he did so, but he just couldn't hit the right note. If anything now he should go back to the Raise Your Fist era because of the rawness of his voice.
I feel its his best CONCEPTUALLY, but not MUSICALLY. The whole concept is just genius, dark and pure Alice. I feel though that the riffs are great, but the structure of the lyrics are a little weak. Like how he repeats "I'm hungry" 4 times, when he could put more in there. Idk, I like it a lot, but DD was a much better album musically. Hey Stoopids the best! Remmber the Coop!
thank god someone agrees with me i was so disappointed with this album i just heard vegence is mine and i thought wow thats awesome gotta buy that. aaand then i heard the rest of it and suicide was around the corner
Good review and reviews , my thoughts are along the same line as both of you . It will grow on you but it falls short for a coop album . The lyric content is nt witty as per the norm for a coop album and mixed with basic rock tunes it just did nt work . Don t get me wrong l love the coop and will be there next time he is in melbourne and ill enjoy every second . To my ears the overall album falls short , but hey what do i know i love special forces and Da Da and will still listen to ACAS .
I don't agree at all : to me it's one of his best albums, the lyrics are just great, and Alice himself had warned before, he'd said "ACAS" was gonna be a real hard rock album, he never said it was gonna be a "WTMN #2" or a "Last Temptation #2". I definitely LOVE it, the story is awesome and the idea of putting good old Steven in it is wonderful. To me, Alice's only "bad" album is "Zippet Catches Skin". "ACAS" is definitely an Alice album...
sorry for me ACAS just stank. it just seemed to be fuzzy beats with moderatly amusing lyrics of murder (that came out wrong). im pretty new to alice but i just think that acas was too soft and what the hell was up with salvation? i know hes christian but thats hardly an excuse to throw practically a full blown hymn into the album. aout of my small collection of cooper albums brutal planet was the best. it was hard balls to the wall rock and i fell in love with it the moment i heard the opening
i think salavation was the "spiders" realization of what he had done all of his life. he fell in love with one of his victims and it opened up something in his mind....and heart...none the less he's crazy....
seriously? Salvation was a hym! I know they need a melodic song on the album and at least one song about god but could they not be the same one?! if i wanted to hear that I'd have listened to songs of praise. i dont mind alice's songs about god some of them are decent, but salvation was downright horrible in my opinion
I love watching your guys reviews, it's awesome that you guys do it together

Have you guys listened to Welcome 2 My Nightmare??? I think it is a fantastic album, and I'd agree with your review of Along Came a Spider.

Catch me if you can and i'm hungry would be awesome live
I really love this album so its a shame he didnt tour it.
I know where you live is the weakest song on the album imo.

Bottom line: this Alice album just doesn't grab you. You summed it up well, "trying too hard", yep....Well said, they cannot all be great.
Vengence Is Mine does come off well live, as it did in Montreal last Saturday, in front of 20,000 people.

Almost everything sounds like garbage the first time you hear it because you're not used to hearing it.
Wake the Dead was the best song with the best riff on the entire album. I've liked at least a couple songs from every Cooper album.
It's a better overall album to me than Dirty Diamonds
