When these records are set does anyone pay attention to the size of pool in which it was set? i.e. there may be more turns required in a 25m pool such as this, but it's more efficient to finish a stroke and turn on a hard surface than finish a stroke and take another in a 50m pool. I mean are the records for 25m pools only? This vids two years old so maybe I'm missing the latest on DNF apnea.
@ImEasyAs I guess 25m pools are the most commonly available length? I know for example the UK has only 5 Olympic pools (50x25m) and 27 other 50m length pools.
Also I was only guessing that it's more efficient to push off a wall but it seemed logical, you're using your legs (some of the biggest muscles in your body) and the wall doesn't move with the force like water.
Amazing. I made some notes in my blog ("Hawkeye's Freediving Blog", too long for comment here) on Dave's incredible technique. Thanks very much for posting this!
It's always good to see how relaxed a person is by their form. He just totally flows, also don't feed the troll, flips is just getting a rise out of you, and he wins if he succeeds.
is this guy hyperventilating before he takes his breath, of course this is a big achievement and i am not trying to put any swimmer down , an underwater swimmer myself, i never hyperventilate it surely makes no sense to do this, i thought the whole point was to relax your body, i would class this as taking an unnecessary risk as you can get shallow water blackout n its like cheating because anyone can use this technique,
He's not hyperventilating, he's "pumping". After a full breath you "pump" some more air into your airways using your mouth. This guys is a world class athlete. I think he knows better...
he clearly is hyperventilating, if you watch the start of the video, you can see him breathing in and out very fast, the evidence is in the ripples in the water, when u pump you pump IN not out, otherwise pumping in and then out IS HYPERVENTILATING, if he was only pumping in then there would not be fast ripples in the water as he starts,
im not disputing that he is a world class swimmer, he is definately a world class experienced swimmer, i am only addressing the basic common sense of it, maybe you have to hyperventilate if u want to swim that far, as i have not seen anyone swim this far before, is the very longest world record, do u know of any longer 1 my friend
What he is doin is breathing very fast to build up a supply of oxygen in his blood. Over time and lots of practice, its possible to get very good at this technique and achieve great distances underwater.
@muspiano This is absolutely untrue. The amount of oxygen in a human's blood cannot be increased by breathing fast. Normal human blood oxygen is saturated at 96-98%, under all normoxic conditions. It's hard to tell for sure, but Dave is probably doing some mild purging to lower his blood CO2 slightly, and finally, right before the dive, packing some extra air into his lungs using the muscles in his mouth and throat. Only he would know for sure.
@kwkarol yes, this is commonly known as "packing." it adds air to the diver's total lung volume, beyond the amount that he/she could inhale using the normal respiratory muscles. Hard to know for sure, given the quality of the video, if that's definitely what Dave is doing. But, you're probably correct. Chances are also good that before he packs, he's doing some mild "purging", aka hyperventilation, to lower his blood CO2 levels (but not to much; very precise). Only Dave would know for sure.
Yeah, I can see that. I said he was good at what he does. You know what? You're right. I'm going to set out right now and spend my life trying to become amazing at holding my breath. I'm gonna be something!
Oh yes, that's right. Because what I said implied that I play video games all the time. Well I know one thing. Holding your breath is damn sure meaningful.
Based on your ignorant attack on this mans achievement, I have made the assumption that you are an uneducated and unfit human being; playing video games came to mind as something you would consider worthwhile to excel at. Forgive me if I was wrong.
You may not see the implications of something like this, but they are endless. I am training for the SEAL Teams right now, and this is something they require. Anything you can do to master the physical body and the physical world is well worth while.
Pretty big assumption to read a couple comments and make the jump and say someone is an uneducated and unfit human being. Unfit human being? Are you referring to physical fitness, or are you actually saying that I'm not suitable to be a human being? Surely it's not the ladder. Actually I hope it is. I like to imagine you as some ridiculously judgemental person who gets so offended over my harmless comments that you deem me as some horrible human who's unfit to live. How's that for an assumption?
No, I value you as a human being, that was purely from a physical standpoint. The basis for that was the fact that you find this pointless, when in fact it is quite amazing and very difficult to do. Anyone that takes physical training seriously, would see that.
My claim for you being uneducated is purely based on your response. Using profanity and improper English to attack this guy is my basis.
Please forgive me if either claim was without merit.
Hey, trust me it is not stupid at all, he can swim underwater for 4 minutes, its almost like he's a sea mammal, imagine to go diving somewhere near coral reefs, relax take one deep breath and go down for 4 minutes...wow...he can be down even longer if he doesn't swim all the time, you feel like part of the sea which is, at least for me one of the most magnificent sensations.
What do you mean? How is this more meaningless then uh.. ANY OTHER SPORT? In todays society we dont need to be good at anything physical so I sure dont see how something is more meaningfull then other things.
I like how it says 'No diving' on the side of the pool. I know it's referring to jumping into the pool, but I still found it amusing watching this video.
I took 64 breaths while watching his entire submerge swim...
