They were Poles, including several Polish Jews, transported from the prison in Tarnów. Most of them were young members of clandestine independence organizations and soldiers from the September 1939 campaign who had been attempting to reach Hungary, in order to travel onwards to France and join the Polish army forming there.

This officer of Polish Army (4th army in Allied Forces during WW2) volunteered to be imprisoned in Nazi German Auschwitz concentration camp. After escape he tried to alarm the free world.
