  • Had enormous trouble with my two hole draw and started thinking that there was a bad problem with my harmonica. Since watching your video, I immediately got clean notes from my two hole draw and I've almost got a good grasp on bends!

    Thank you!

  • Thank you for the video Jon. It has helped massively.

I bought my first harmonica and one of those stuffy "you can teach yourself harmonica" books. It was dog dirt. I couldn't get to grips with the pesky little harp, until I discovered your videos and books.

I bought a copy of Rock & Blues Harmonica and I'm now getting nice tone, clear single notes, improving daily and more importantly having a shitload of fun. Everyone should go and buy a copy NOW!!!

    Thanks again.

  • question- why do you do a draw on the 2 instead of just blowing G on the third hole? it seems like a much easier way to slide into the notes, rather than having to reverse the breath so often

  • @JubileeGiggles sorry, that was meant to be a post to your "understanding the I-!V-V" video

  • @JubileeGiggles 2 draw is more difficult, but it is the money reed. The reed you can bend and make talk. 3 blow is very easy but also very inexpressive.

  • Thank you so very much! I just got my harmonica last night (Christmas eve) so I only just started playing today. I watched some other videos covering the same subject, but after this lesson everything just fell into place! I can easily play single notes now, accurately and with MUCH better tone than just a few minutes ago. I just wacthed you "Good morning lick" tutorial, learned me very much too! If I continue in this pace, I'll be playing decently in a few weeks! I really apprecciate what u do!

  • I have been trying to get a single note for the last few days before finding this video. I had been doing this, but backward. I have been pushing the harp down instead of up which causes my lower lip to cover most of the bottom of the harp and my upper lip to cover only a little. i seem to get good results this way, but i was wondering if this is wrong and will it cause me problems as i progress? I ordered one of your books and waiting for delivery. I am looking forward to getting it. Thanks.

  • Thank you for taking the time to post these great lessons!

  • "Try and feel a connection between the 'ca ca' in your throat and the reed of the harmonica."

    haaaaaa...

But seriously, this was a great lesson. You clearly explained proper embouchure and I was hearing improvements in my tone before even finishing the video. Excellent.

  • this

  • Thanks so much man my first time watching the video and i am already doing better then the last 5 days of trying!!

  • still haven't found anyone on Youtube who demonstrates how to achieve Butterfield's acoustic tone. If you've heard it, you know what it is.

  • holy crap, finally. i get it. i've been practicing forever with no luck. then i watch this video and go something like this : " Oh...." . thank you so much!

  • @ItsMrRumpleToYou HAHAHAHAHA

  • You got that blues personna thing goin, the voice, harp guitar. You got it all. Great video. I'll check out your other stuff. Thanx

  • I use the tip of my tongue under the hole to get a single note...... but when i do that, it is more difficult to bend the notes....what should i do?

  • @juanchodt Relearn. Do what the lesson says.

  • This was very helpful!

  • you would make a great joker(batman) ,also love your lessons, helps much.

    (greetings from turkey!)

  • I have been working through rock n' blues harmonica and it is a great book. Entertaining as well as very helpful. Actually has one of the best descriptions of basic theory I have come across. Thank you for all. I love your videos, as well. Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge.

  • I've been trying to be able to comfertably play single notes on the harp since I started playing, and this halped out alot!

    5 stars thank you

  • this is real help!!!! thx

  • Hi, I tongue block all the time and cant achieve a single note any other way, is it possible to bend notes when tongue blocking, because i have tried and tried and cant seem to do it. thanks

  • Comment removed

  • @whitto69 yes it is

  • thanks a lot. This helped my technique a lot in terms of volume and sound quality

  • OH MY GOD!.

I've only had my harp for 5 days and I've watched a coupple video's on lip blocking or lip pursing and i thought that you still had to have alot of pressure on the top lip to clamp down on that single note. As a result my tone was les bright, (a little dead sounding).

Literally after going to gindicks site and watching this vid, I grabed by harp tried the technique in teh begining and it worked like a charm! It seems to make bends much easier too!

  • i got my harmonica a couple of weeks ago and i was really excited about playing it. when i first looked online, though, all i could find was a bunch of confusing, unhelpful websites that didn't teach me very well at all. now that I've watched these videos i feel more encouraged to play. thank you jon for rekindling my interest in this instrument once again!

  • you sound like jack nicholson

  • Fantastic!! I have been playing for just a short time ( one Month) and these technique has made a HUGE difference. Im having diffuculty with the ca ca on the draw but hey that why im a beginner....practice practice practice.. Again Great video

  • Great. It makes fun to see your videos.

Which harp did you use for this?

  • oogie caca in my throat!! yuck .. just kidding Jon . i have been going thru your Rock and blues book and its great every time I listen i pick up on something new some nuance that makes my harp playing better

  • "BEAUTIFUL, I KNOW" You are so funny Jon! Can't wait to finally meet you at jam camp. It is on my list "to do before I die". Hey everyone. If you are a beginner Jon's stuff is the absolute best. Get his instructional stuff NOW!

    Regards

  • awesome lesson! Thank you, sir.

  • I've been playing harmonica for about 2 years or so now and I owe it all to your book "Country and Blues Harmonica for the Musically Hopeless." I seriously don't know what I would have done without it, and if it weren't for you, I wouldn't be a harmonica player. Thanks Jon!!

  • Great vid. Thanks for helping us novices.Does anyone else think Jon has a resemblance to Nick Nolte in this vid ?

  • thanks for your enthousiastic teaching!! It might get me somewehere!!

  • Got my C harp the 27th, been playing with it since then, and this has taken me miles beyond that silly book. God bless you for being brave enough to make goofy faces for the sake of embouchure!
