Translation Part2: And as they prayed. As they prayed They released a Bible. They taught us to pray with eyes closed And when we opened his eyes, we had their Bibles in hand And in their hands, they had our land. Will have to take a look at Mama Congo Will have to improve its image in the promised land Will have to take our land, even keeping the Bible Because it teaches us the love of neighbor, Loving the Congo, it is to be able to love the Congolese.
I was lucky enough to see Balogi at a free concert in Chicago's millenium park last night. I almost didn't go. I had never heard of him but he had me and most of the crowd on their feet dancing .He' s going to be at the Folk and Roots festival on Sunday in Chicago and if you're in Chicago you should be sure to check him out.
Bravo!
the artist may think she/he is sending a his/her message to the audience that message to the audience which is from the artist is called a preferred reading. however, in this world no receiver takes preferred reading from a medium only a a medium reading or the opposite reading so the artist so-called artist never and i say never make the meaning because we think the music's meaning has important implications on the us.
Most artists are not sending messages. They simply write from inspiration and the listener makes what he/she likes of it.
I think the problem for you is that you are dismissing enjoyment of music by trying to analyse it through some spurious psychological disection that simply confuses the issue.
Pop music, unlike classical, is transient, temporary and ultimately irrelevant, no matter how good it is, so why not just enjoy it?
@alisdfd1992: Baloji was born in the DRC, but his Belgian father took him to Belgium when he was four years old. He grew up speaking (and rapping) Belgian French.
The album this song is from (Kinshasa Succursale) came about when he went back to reconnect with his Congolese mother, and his roots.
@throbule U SHUT UP IM NOT THE AUDIENCE THE AUDIENCE IS NEVER PASSIVE AS THE AUDIENCE MAKES THE MEANING OF ANY MEDIUM U IDIOT GO AND LEARN ABOUT MEDIA AND ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH THE AUDIENCE SIMPLE SPEAK IN THE NATIVE LANGUAGE TO SHOW THE STRENGTH OF AFRICA AND ITS COLONIERS FAILED SIMPLY
The audience has a right to be anything it wants to be - but when an audience member (like you) starts to tell an artist what they must do, then its time for that audience member to shut up.
Baloji (and all other artists) have the sole power to make all decisions about their art, and therefore they outrank you and your opinions.
Just pay your entrance fee (or buy the CD), sit and enjoy, clap at the end and then just leave please.
Thats all any artist needs from you (the audience).
Furthermore - Since when did an audience make the meaning of any medium?
The meaning and intention of all art and music is entirely in the mind of the artist.
The consumer can say what he/she likes about that music or art, but it does not change it or give it a new meaning above the artist or musician, and as such, is subordinate to the artists original inspiration.
Its all in your head this media relationship bollox you mention.
@throbule look at consumer's culture pop music, people buy pop track because they interpret the meaning to mean something for them and has a meaning in their life.however, the truth is that just because we sing a song has no meaning to us, we are just copying someone's else feelings which is the artist who sung the soNg ADORNO HE CALL IT PSUEDO-INDIVIDUALIZED
There you go displaying your knowledge of media gobbleygook again.
People buy music because they like it, not because it has meaning - meaning only comes with time.
Unless we know what an artist's inspiration or intention was, we can only put our own meaning on a song or a piece of music, and it rarely has anything to do with what the artist had in mind.
That does not devalue the consumers feelings - but they are still subordinate to the artists own ideas of what the music means.
Hi, my name is Willy. just thought i'd say i made it back all right! :) was great to see you, but a bit short. could've stayed there whole night :( but saw that there is a concert in brussels in june.. ;)
hey balo! catching a plane in 2h.. crossing 2000km just to be with you on saturday night at la cigale and express my admiration :) ohhh will miss my flight..! good luck!! and bisous to all fans! :)
This is so beautiful it brings back memories of earliest childhood when my mother & I used to walk across the reflected pool of the parks and gaze into the beauties of nature thereafter, she would smile at me and reassure me of my safety and said to me: do not fear what u cannot understand, only, open your eyes, but watch with your heart and feel with your soul and embrace NATURE, ANd thus u embrace you, For YOU, my dear son, are NATURE too... How, I love her for her wisdom!
Senga77 said you are the pride of Congo...he/she is wrong; you are the pride of Africa, A(lgeria) to Z(imbabwe)...T trop fort cousin, t la fierte d'Afrique
The title of the album it's "Hotel Impala". I'm not sure whether you can get a translation anywhere.. But I can tell you that the texts are amazing. Give me goosebumps :) Luck with getting the album!
ok , les belges ont planifient la division du congo alors eux ne peuvent pas resoudre le leur god pay the back what they did plan for congo now you can see the dramas in their poor country
i teach a course on HIP HOP and I want to let my class know about him. I want to show the vid in the class this monday to talk about how Hip Hop is real and alive back home in Africa
Hey any place for ladies here? Balo you ROCK! Man that's pure poetry that you doing, fantastic lyrics and music that pierces right through my chest! Ai ai ai.... I'm dying, c'est sur! "Tout ceci.." is just an entry point to the album, then come the other songs.. "Ostende transit", "Septembre", "Coup de gaz" AND "NAKUENDA". Beats me! When is you coming with a concert to Eastern Europe? Peace, love et bonne chance pour la suite! For me you are making history. And bisous to all the fans ;)
Damn the last few minutes gets real.
Superb video.

Translation for the preacher at the end:
Hear me, hear me well my child.
You know why, do you know why my friend?
One day bwana arrived by boat.
They are down, they had a flag.
They planted in front of us shouting that our land was now their land.
It was no grumbling praying and crying,
There was no flag so had to keep quiet.
