The taliban have got nothing but time. And the US has got nothing but debt.

As soon as Russia, China et al work out how to ditch the dollar as the worlds reserve currency then they'll be free from propping it up and funding their own encirclement. They're already trying because they really dont want to go down along with the US.

When that happens, the cycle of debt and over-spending turns into total implosion.

Afghanistan and Iraq won't be won then, and won't even be relevant.

There needs to be stability there. If Iraq is lost why are a lot of things improving, such as the economy, education system, and overall safety. Its not on the fastest improvement but its on an improvement nonetheless. That is "almost won" in my opinion.

And with Afghanistan I am referring to the Taliban. I deployed there for 12 months and I will tell you the way to beat the taliban is to continually crush them and discredit them and give value to the tribal system of the Afghans.

YES! They need stability and you do hint at the right way to beat the taliban - it is far more than a military solution, but what is happening still lacks important non-military action.

But dude, Iraq is of course improving in some of those areas - could it get any worse? Reducing anywhere to rubble and calling the first sign of improvement "almost won" doesnt do it for me.

The very small number of people being the military-financial-political hegemony that cause these problems and then put good peoples lives on the line to "solve" these problems, meanwhile taking huge contracts, huge slices of deals and positions of increasing power along the way.

I never said fighting them is wrong, but we've done it so spectacularly 'wrongly' and never would have been there if those few people weren't hugely benefitting from it. And it wasn't for more education and jobs!

I also agree with action in Afghanistan, I have done since the talibans extreme laws and ways of enforcing them became very public around 10 years ago, peaking with the destruction of their countrys own heritage like the 200 foot high Buddhas of Bamiyan in early 2001. But the invasion of 2003 was a totally disgusting misappropriation of extreme force.

I also think it very suspicious that 90% of heroin in the west is now coming from Afghanistan whereas pre-2003 the taliban kept a lid on it!
