He doesn't like to hurt Sami, and he realizes this everytime a little wihle later after it affects their relationship, because he's in love with her (even now, I think he is). He likes to play with fire, and doesn't really pay much attention to the consequences (unless it's needed).

That's why it was so refreshing when he and Nicole became friends and started falling for each other. No ugly history.They were two peas in a pod. They were sexy. Then Dena had to ruin it, of course.

Let's also take a look at the history of Soap Opera rapes over the course of decades.... Luke & Laura of GH are a prime example along with Bill & Laura of Days. Those couples became super couples. i saw the episode when ej rapped sami i thought it was terrible. i couldn't believe he could do something like that.
i think he later learned of the pain that it caused her and he told her he was sorry and she chose to forgive him.
i think after that he treated her like a woman instead of his property. that's when i started gaining respect for his character on the show.
i'm actually a fan of all the actors. not a fan of him raping her though.
