What the fuck, man? Why the hate on McGee? He tried EVERY avenue available to him to find the rest of the men in Cpl. Yost's unit given his Top Secret clearances. McGee only searched for men in Yost's unit because NO ONE ever thinks about the Japanese who were there on Iwo Jima when searching for survivors from Yost's unit.
Notice how Gibbs never got angry or disappointed with McGee? That's because he knew McGee tried everything he could to find Yost's surviving squad mates.
However distasteful this may sound, I loved how the 3 stooges's assholes puckered up as soon as Tony revealed the MoH and they snapped to good and proper! A tribute to the heroism of all MoH as well as VC recipients, not forgetting the brave soldiers who won various and many other distinctions in the line of duty.
And, I had to point out to someone, that Cpl. Yost is not the one who shows the MoH. Look closely and you will see that it is Tonys hand (sleeve color) that pulls the tie aside to show the Medal of Honor.
Under the Department of the Navy, neither Navy personnel nor Marines salute indoors unless under arms. The MP's are under arms, and have their covers (hats) on. The Navy female commander is uncovered, meaning she is not under arms. If indoors, or in civilian attire, a salute is against regulations. Protocol for those situations is to snap to attention and face the object of respect.
That officer should have saluted him also no matter what he did. He was wearing Medal of honor. As a vet I feel she was disrespectful to the man who won the nations highest honor. If not the man salute the medal.
@Tony007corp It the highest award you can win in the america military, where you can only win it by going beyond the call of duty or in other words doing something extremily brave and heroic
@Tony007corp - Didn't you even watch the whole episode?
@Lightingwarrior - Just for pedantics, Gibbs said to Caitlin earlier, "You don't *win* the Medal of Honor, Kate. You're *AWARDED* it for conspicuous gallantry above and beyond the call of duty." Nobody ever *wins* the Congressional Medal of Honor.
In some odd way this clip always make me feel the honor and gives a slight tear in my eyes. I'm no fan of war but i do respect those who fight for their countries. Not those less who get medals for it saving lives, because war can save lives even i personally think there should be better ways to solve the problems.
Durning himself said he almost never took this part because it was too personal and painful. I cannot think of anyone else in this role. His presence lent this episode palpable gravitas.
@dfdmedic647 That is CORRECT. You are giving RESPECT to the individual for his act of BRAVERY that was ABOVE & BEYOND the call of duty. An action of HEROISM that was deemed at the HIGHEST perilous risk of his own life. Usually in combat action to SAVE the life/lives of another/others. ALL military personnel (REGARDLESS of rank) are REQUIRED to give such recognition and RESPECT to those who have earned this award. They have EARNED it throught their HEROIC deed. Semper Fidelis. Col. G. USMC.
Meawins13 sorry to tell you but you are wrong. (As the award citation includes the phrase "in the name of Congress", it is sometimes erroneously called the Congressional Medal of Honor; however, the official title is simply the Medal of Honor.)
do generals salute to an enlisted man if he's wearing a medal of honor? And why don't these MOH recipients get promoted to officer rank if it's such a big deal? dumb questions, but just curious.
@kingnick104 Battlefield commissions do not exist anymore. In wars past, they did. Now they do not. By order of Congress, ANY individual who desires to become an officer in the armed forces of The United States of America MUST possess a FULL college degree (Bachelor or higher). NO exceptions. This INCLUDES those of military enlisted ranks who earn the Medal of Honor. Col. G. USMC.
@simboy418 Answer #1, YES. You are giving RESPECT to the individual for his act of BRAVERY that was ABOVE & BEYOND the call of duty. An action of HEROISM that was deemed at the HIGHEST perilous risk of his own life. Usually in combat action to SAVE the life/lives of another/others. @simboy418 Answer #2, No. It is a REQUIREMENT that to become a commissioned officer, you MUST possess a FULL college degree (Bachelor or better). The act of an enlisted military individual receiving the Medal of Honor for his act of BRAVERY that was deemed ABOVE & BEYOND the call of duty does NOT entitle them to an officer commission. His act of BRAVERY has already been recognized by his superiors & he has been given both recommendation & reception of this award. Semper Fidelis. Col. G. USMC.
@claudevsq Battlefield commissions no longer exist. In wars before, they were deemed aceptable for the brave deeds of the individual and based upon the needs of the mission. Those who displayed such acts of leadership and courage were given such commissions. Now mandated by Congress, ANY individual who desires to become an officer, MUST possess a FULL college degree (Bahelor or higher). NO exceptions. Remember, although some who earn the Medal of Honor may not be officers, they are all HEROS.
@TheRhysprice: She didn't salute because she wasn't wearing a cover (hat); you don't wear a cover indoors unless under arms (carrying a weapon), as the Marines with her are.
you should've put the part in here where they show the Japanese soldier as well . that's the one part I've wanted to see . :/ . LIke when they first meet him .
I love when Tony pulls back his lapel and shows his MOH. Charles Durning was an actual MOH recipient.
This is my favorite episode of the first 2 seasons. I could watch it over and over again and not get sick of it. I absolutely love Charles Durning. And to the person who said that those who call athletes heros-I agree. They make millions of dollars and do their stupid dances or do other stupid things while those like Charles Durning have fought for our country.
@fishergrl78 Charles Durning did fight in the war, however he wasn't a MOH recipient. From what I've heard/read he's gotten a Silver Star and something like three or four Purple Hearts. Speaking of that, I still regard him as one of my all time favorite actors and this scene just goes to prove it.
This is my absolute favorite moment on NCIS. I adore Charles Durning...and I can't think of another actor who could have brought such realism to the battle scene that comes after this. He went through so much as a 21 year old on D-Day. He is the living embodiment of HERO. It pisses me off when people call football and basketball players heroes. They are BALL PLAYERS...not heroes. Down from my soapbox now!
@swastikausa Nope.. its illegal. If one is caught wearing the MoH then he can be fined up to $100,000 and face a year in prison. This of course, is only if the law hasn't been appealed.
I love this episode, watched it earlier this evening on British TV, had to watch it again here on Youtube. This is the best NCIS episode ever, the second best being the one where Ducky's mother calls Tony an "Italian gigolo."
This the BEST episode ever. I love all the shows, but Charles Durning was magnificient. I feel the entire cast (always good) hitched it up a notch because of Charles' performance. Bravo!
Possibly the most memorable episode of the entire series. Charles Durning turns in a top-notch performance. When his character dances with Kate, it's difficult to keep a lump from forming in your throat.
they may have done some research, but they should have delved further, Sailors and Marines do not salute in doors...note they are wearing covers indoors because they are on duty, but indoors the President doesn't get a salute
damn staright they salute, put President Obama infront of one of those, help put him in his damn place.... yes the Medal of Honor rates a salute from even the President
Charles Durning (Ernie Yost) - Real life Sgt in Army Rangers. Veteran of D-Day Omaha Beach shown in Saving Private Ryan earned Silver Star and Purple Heart......later injured by German S-mine (bouncing betty). Recovered from wounds and then fought in the Battle of the Bulge....earned 2 more Purple Hearts....
@actonbath He was also one of the few survivors of the massacre of American troops by the German army, when they took American POW's and murdered them in the forest during the Battle of the Bulge.
On a lighter note, I've heard he's one hell of a ballroom dancer, too.
Charles During has been one of my favs for years. A true gentleman and class act.
This is one of my all-time favorite episodes. Charles Durning as the corporal...the awesome emotion just seeing a Medal of Honor invokes...God bless all who have ever served our flag!
this is the best episode of NCIS ever. Thats right motherfuckers, snap to attention and salute, before someone starts busting rank! That man faced an impossible enemy and still won!
I love when Tony pulls back his lapel and they salute him. Charles Durning was PHEMOMINAL in this episode. I think this episode was one of the best ever in the early seasons.
hell yea! it was mysterious and so sad too. but he was one of the men who was on Iwo Jima. where there were 4000 dead and 15000 wounded marines. and they still won. oorah Cpl. Yost
this is probably the best scene of that season and all members of the military salute a Medal Of Honor recipient they salute them as they do when in the prescense of the president
A young soldier near where I live was awarded the MOH just recently. He dove on a grenade. He took the blast and died but it saved his platoon. President Bush presented the MOH to his parents.
I am not in the military but even I would salute someone who was awarded the Medal of Honor. That is the ultimate award. Most people ever awarded it are never alive to receive it. To receive it you basically went throught hell and back twice and in most cases died to save another.
Ultimate respect to all those who have been awarded this.
I've read why this is at a couple of site on the net: By tradition the Medal of Honor is saluted by all personnel unless the military person is without cover (that is bare-headed). It's quite odd, actually, but hey, it proves that the producers do their research.
I can't remember where I saw it and who said, it was either Mark Harmon or Michael Weatherly, but apparently they have a real life NCIS agent(s) behind the scenes to help out the writers for ideas (like real life cases for inspiration for the show) and to train the actors on procedures.
@PressGangFan the have an actual NCIS agent who tries to help them stick to what really goes on at the actual NCIS not to mention the cast members do research as well
This shows how much respect people have for those who have recieved the medal of honor, there 115 likes, yet not a single dislike.

I love when Tony pulls back his lapel and they salute him. Charles Durning was PHEMOMINAL in this episode. I think this episode was one of the best ever in the early seasons.

@Gecko7291971 Well they know how to show respect to a hero when they see it, also the commander also stood to attention when she saw it
Lightingwarrior 6 months ago
@Lightingwarrior True, But she was also supposed to Salute, seeing as she wasn't wearing gloves

This whole episode was fantastic. The subject of the Medal of Honor is not trod upon lightly.

A young soldier near where I live was awarded the MOH just recently. He dove on a grenade. He took the blast and died but it saved his platoon. President Bush presented the MOH to his parents.

He was awarded that medal posthumously
Gecko7291971 2 years ago
I am not in the military but even I would salute someone who was awarded the Medal of Honor. That is the ultimate award. Most people ever awarded it are never alive to receive it. To receive it you basically went throught hell and back twice and in most cases died to save another.
Ultimate respect to all those who have been awarded this.

@nytnt4u
I totally agree with you on this
It takes a very rare breed of service person to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor

Why didn't Commander Coleman salute? She stood at attention but did not salute...I thought everyone saluted a Medal of Honor recipient?
luthierpa74 2 years ago 2
She didn't wear her hat.

@PressGangFan the have an actual NCIS agent who tries to help them stick to what really goes on at the actual NCIS not to mention the cast members do research as well
pianoaddict96 1 year ago
@PressGangFan If you noticed, Lt. Cmdr Coleman wasn't wearing gloves, so technically, she should've saluted as well
Gecko7291971 7 months ago
@PressGangFan I believe it's a sign or respect and honour those who won it
Lightingwarrior 6 months ago
