Reaaallly nice tip! It costed me around €12 for the whole system ( mp3 player + connectors ) and it works fine for my Rhode Videomic Pro plugged in to my 7D.
If you have a T2i an alternative to tricking the AGC like this, one can install the Magic Lantern firmware which will let you turn off AGC. Among other things.
Though, may be good idea to have this trick cable around incase you run into any other device that suffers from AGC, likely would work on those too.
If I'm not mistaken, the VideoMic has the tip and ring connected together to allow it to be compatible with both mono and stereo cameras. It's sending the same mono signal to both channels. The sleeve is the common connection. So any adapter would need to send the output to only one channel of the camera. The tone is put on the other channel. That's why a Y-adapter doesn't work, it just puts the corresponding connections in parallel as it should.
...note. I realize I'm also going to need a small mp3 player as well. Plus one of these cables. But would these two parts cure the noise on my t2i with the Rode Videomic installed?.
Thanks for all your videos, there a great help. Can I ask, is this cable all that is needed? I've seem some videos where you then have to import the audio into a program and remove the tone channel there
I bought an double-rca to 3.5mmjack, then I bought a rca to rca coupler and finally I bought 2 female 3.5mm jack to rca.. I put it together, rode in one female jack, mp3 into the other, they are both plugged in the coupler and then I plugged my rca to 3.5mm jack cable in it. What's the difference between what you made and me?
Dave great video... Currently I run my Senhieser Wireless to my H4n then to my 7D. Would this "hack Cable" work in place of the H4N in order to record my wireless voice right in sync with my video? I dont't have a rode mic but looking to get one soon!
I don't really get it. If you connect mp3/4 player also to it ... can/t you just record an audio to this player (with rode connected)? What's the difference beetween recording in this/your setup and recording directly to mp3 player? Thanks in advance for an answer.
Hey Dave, have you considered making and selling these soldered wired lits to disable the AGC. Im willing to bet, if you advertised these on some sites like hv20.com, dvxuser, and here. You could do well , or at least sumpliment your income. 20.00 per kit, if you can wire five per hr, your looking at 100.00 per hr. not bad in this economy.
Got my Rode Videomic AGC disable working proper with one added component from Radio Shack, the stereo female to mono male adapter. Slap that rig in between your video mic and the dual mono female to stereo male and the agc hack works like a charm. I know you know this Dave, but in case your viewers don't- it works.
the "airline" r/l male mono to female stereo from radio shack works for this. I'll post up a video of it on my channel and how it's setup on my channel :) i used this video to test it -- i have a comparison video on my channel that i threw together real quick.
Can you make a video on your light setup please because you cant be just using room light because there is no grain and it is very sharp and is it the lens because i want to learn how to use my kit lens before I upgrade. And please share some movie mode settings that you use in different lighting. Thank you
@m3h5l5 The lighting is very simple, 99% of the time it is just natural light coming in from the window. Check out my HDR tutorial video and you can see where the light comes from.

TheOneManShow962 6 months ago
cant you just use a plug also for the mp3 side? that way you dont have to have an aux cable connected to it unless it wont work without the aux cable
scornofx 7 months ago
@scornofx also whats the point of soldering the black wires if they are not used?

Dave - do you have a thread adapter on your mic stand in order to put the rode videomic on it? If so where did you get it?

Two questions:
1. How much does this hack cost?
2. Instead of an mp3 player, would an iPhone work?

@GerlitzProductions yes all you need is the cable and a mp3 player to make it work, just delete the tone in post.

@HeroArmySurplus The hack will work for you but I am not sure this cable will work since the Senhieser might be wired differently.

@MassacreOlsztyn if you record it to your mp3 player (if it had a preamp) then you would need to sync the audio later.
