  • only 240p

  • this sucks, it didn't show the parts where the plane did or didn't take off

  • @oplaopla1

the first real experiment which was the RC plane, it didn't take off. the real airplane experiment was done incorrect. airplane has airspeed not wheel speed. the pilot went by air speed.

  • @taledarkside Correct, they are not very smart. The planes wheels just spin twice as fast...

  • I should have known better, Go watch on TV!!! wtf is TV? jeeze :(

  • dear discovery network please upload the videos in a higher resolution.

  • Such an odd choice, of course the plane cannot take off unless it's airspeed is the correct level. Not ground speed....

  • Comment removed

  • @TheEodtch Actually it is a myth. The plane's is still putting out the force that it requires to take off. The wheels are just spinning faster than that. If the treadmill was moving at 1000mph the plane would take off, but the wheels would be spinning at 1000mph + Takeoff speed. The planes engine is getting its thrust from the air, not the ground, so the ground moving in the opposite direction means nothing. The air is still stagnant for the most part.

  • Comment removed

  • @TheEodtch The myth is "a plane on a treadmill will remain stationary". Its still a myth. The plane will not remain stationary, meaning it moves forward creating lift allowing it to takeoff. If you would have watched the episode they would have explained it to you, but obviously you didn't and you don't understand the physics at work.

  • @xSaCrEdKhAoSx I do understand the physics of it but no I did not watch listen to the "myth" close enough. When I was told about it the person said the plane was not aloud to move forward. I did hear it wrong, and yes the plane would move forward and I will watch closer next time before spouting off.

  • Ok so I just watched a lot of videos of 9/11 and it is classified as either a Myth or Conspiracy. I would like to know if a building (two towers) if hit from an angle, destroy the building with minimal spread, equally on both buildings. I just assumed that from watching videos if a plane did hit the building on a corner side, wouldn't some projectiles fly right through? I'm no die hard fan but I would want them to test this theory somehow.

  • I like myth busters, but why would they test such a stupid myth? I mean.... do they think we are reatarded?

  • @FailDrummer actually on average we are retarded

  • 240p We meet again.........

  • uh, WHERE'S THE TAKEOFF FOOTAGE? That's the only reason to watch this...

  • ikr

  • Y there r so many dislikes?

  • I liked the face at 2:22

  • Came here thanks to 4chin

  • So did it work?

  • @AlvinTingyk it will most definitely not work the plane needs to have air resistance so the plane will get pushed up and if the plane isnt moving it will not take off

  • why not HD :(

  • what is the episode where the athiest faggot talks about how when you die your soul gets eaten by a space eagle lol

    someone upload that

  • @TheSpiesAtHome athiest faggot?

  • What if the conveyor belt was accelerating at the same rate that the plane would have with the propellor...

  • The propeller the thrusting the air in which is still stationary. This creates forward force. The plane moves forward as normal because the power comes from the propeller, the wheels are just moving twice as fast to compensate for the "treadmill" underneath it

  • How did that guy get a pilots licence?

  • the plane takes off because the engine which powers the propeller pushes the plane forward, and the wheels only drag along. the wheels will move twice as fast to compensate for the treadmill while still being pushed forward by its propeller. so this makes it still go forward allowing it to fly. sound rite? this is wat they pretty much said at the end of the show

  • Why are people so dumb. "Oh this is impossible bla bla bla bla!!" The Mythbusters just proved it you idiots!! They explain everything and make sure they dont miss a damn thing! Its the same thing with blowing your own sail, its possible! they proved it.

  • @Bobagonoosh552 It's a TV show, not a scientific paper. They are special effects technicians, not scientists.

  • @PINGASFIST They experiment and show proof. that is science which means they are in a way, indeed scientists. Just because they dont work in a lab and wear a white lab coat does not mean they are not scientists.

  • @Bobagonoosh552 But then again, it is also a tv show meant to entertain.

  • i already know its impossible coz no air is flowing over the wings of plane

  • @anshulkamboj then why were they able to do it??

  • As a pilot, this is the most retarded thing I've ever seen and I don't even want to look for the actual results.

  • it doubles the speed forwards try backwards

  • Look! If the plane and treadmill are moving the same speed then the plane would stand stil = NO LIFT. Planes need wind speed to take off not fast moving wheels.

  • @alejandroc19 the power doesn't come from the wheels, it comes from the propeller, if it was a car then you'd be right, but it's not. it takes off.

  • @Roksonixx you make a good point but the propeller does create enough lift by itself. It's only enough to get the plane moving forward which in combination is enough for lift. No take off.

  • @alejandroc19 no you misunderstand the point, the plane moves forward as normal because the power comes from the propeller, the wheels are just moving twice as fast to compensate for the "treadmill" underneath it, lift is generated because the plane moves forward like normal regardless of what goes on to to it's wheels - watch the episode, it works

  • 204 people think an airplane's wheels provide its speed.

  • Are they scraping for ideas or what?

  • make a smoke boomb or how to make a rocket with r dandy

  • You'd think they'd upload it in a higher quality :/

  • newsflash? a plane is not a car, the thrust comes from the propeller, not the wheels, moving anything on the ground does not have anything to say...

  • So let me get this shit straight - We invaded Iraq so our economy would be strong enough to finance TV programs like this ?

Yeah, now I understand why so many former soldiers commit suicide ! LOL !

  • only a real mythbusters fan watches in 240p

  • this is how dumb people are

  • are people seriously retarded

  • I just got the whole first and third seasons on dvd so I dont know why Im here. Probably something about Youtube that makes it more fun to watch.

  • @Milomia9 it's the funny comments that they say on youtube :]

  • @dEAthsYkE378 Those are negated by all the trolls. Therre more trolls here than comedians.

  • @Milomia9 I know, but still I find them funny most of the time

  • Why even test this..?

  • i didn't realise discovery channel uses calculators to film as well

  • I can only hope that the negative votes are for being unsatisfied with the test or results, not the video being crappy

  • Stupidest experiment ever done.

  • Good video. Hi My Name is Lloyd Spell. Please let me show you what Brain Coral do. After you see this, if you understand and know what they do. Please help by contacting the Center for Disease Control or any one who can help put a stop to it. Thank you. mrlloydspell channel, Just look up lloydspell and goto channel.

  • As any first year engineering student knows, lift is created by wheels moving really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really fast.

  • @Flailwielder you're probably one of them. Btw, I never thought it like that my first year.

  • @dookiekong007 Then you must suck at metaphysics. Haven't you notices that the wheels move really really fast on a plane before it takes off? Thats because the combined radiation field of gravitons and graviolis pushes the wheels, creating lift. Its science...SCIENCE!!1!!!1!!!!111

  • IN MYTH EVALUTION WHEN ADAM TRYS TO BREATH THROUGH THE TIRE SOME TIRES ARE DIFFERENT SO HE MIGHT BE ABLE TO ACTUALLY BREATH THROUGH THE TIRE

  • 2:22 - then what? this 'clip' sucks. another corporate tease

  • dhhhhhaaa... what about the windspeed under the wings........ no way..

  • 2:22 of suspence, then cutting off before you get to see what happens, what a waste of time!

  • Greetings from Germany!

    You're to stupid .. you're really Great.

  • whats with the shitty quality

  • please Adam Jame and I am here in Brazil and how many I'm a fan of the program and wanted you fizesem an episode about the following myth: a person swallowed an explosive and she will be buried alive like the pirates did, and the explosive will explode when she is buried and his body will be intact because the sand does retain the pieces. Is this true?

  • Myth says if you cancel out the forward velocity of a plane with the backward velocity of a treadmill, can it fly? For this myth, if you have wind hitting the front of the plane at 8 m/s, then you can say the plane has a velocity of 8 m/s because the plane is catching the same wind and pressures it would at 8 m/s without the opposing forces. Myth then becomes "can a plane without velocity fly without wind?" No. If the plane flies, it's because velocities were not canceled, like in the video.

  • But, When you put it on a treadmill, only the wheels go around?

  • hmm... shouldnt adam and jamie know about all that lift and drag and everything?

  • Ok people who cant understand why the plane WILL take off: Lets say the plane takes off on a flat normal surface (not the treadmill) and when it takes off, the wheels are spinning 100 miles per hour. Lets say the treadmill is moving at 100 MPH. The plane gets on the treadmill and the propeller will pull the plane forward, but the wheels will have to spin 200 MPH to take off. The only way the airplane WOULD NOT take off, is if the treadmill was programmed to match the speed ofthehweelsoftheplane.

  • @bcopp8323 The wheels will be spinning at 200 MPH (probably measured in RPMs but whatever), the plane itself will be still going 100 mph to take off. The treadmill just makes the wheels spin faster, the plane WILL take off. I know this and I have never taken a physics class in my life.

  • @bcopp8323 Let me answer on behalf of much of the population: "Huh?" "But... but..." "Naw, it's goin' backwards on the belt" "I don't get it" "But if the wheels... um... if the wheels...um..." "Naw, yur awl rong" "Huh?"

    Pretty sad, innit? X-D

  • @carmium very

  • @bcopp8323 But the 'myth' explicitly states that the plane is moving forward at the same speed the treadmill is moving backwards, i.e. ground speed zero. You're postulating that the plane is driving forwards twice as fast, relative to the treadmill. If the difference in velocity is higher then the plane's minimum takeoff speed, then it will take off. Fair enough, but that's not what this whole utterly ridiculous myth is about.

  • this is retarded and anyone who thought it would take off is retarded and the fact they had to test whether its true is retarded jesus fucking christ its obvious it wont fly to anyone with half a brain

  • @arr5612 Have you figured out that YOU"RE the "retard" with "half a brain" here yet?

  • @carmium If you think a plane on a treadmill will take off you're retarded, however a plane on a giant conveyerbelt would.

  • @arr5612 If you are talking about a typical exercise treadmill, then obviously nothing will happen, but that was never the question. For the purposes of this exercise, there is NO difference between a conveyor belt and a treadmill. Plus, you never said anything about that in your comment. 8-P

  • @arr5612 Actually you're wrong. A static plane does not take off, true. However a plane does not take speed like a car, the car engine rotates the wheels thus a treadmill will cancel it. HOWEVER!! a plane engine does not activate the wheels, it uses air propelling, the wheels will just spin twice as fast so it will cancel the treadmill and the plane will have the same speed. This is without taking friction into consideration which will reduce the speed by a little amount.

  • @stefanstalex this whole debate is one big miscommunication, the people who say it wont take off mean an actual treadmil, the thing you excersise on, obviously it wouldnt take off one of those because it would hit the front, but if you mean a huge conveyer belt and normal plane then yes.

  • @arr5612 Well actually it's not a miss-communication, it's the fact that people have the impression that a plane will remain static on a treadmill just like a car, or a human, or anything that is using wheel propulsion, the plane however does not use that kind of propulsion, it uses air propulsion through it's propeller, so it makes a treadmill do absolutely nothing. A plain will travel at 100 km/hr on a road, add a treadmill that goes 100000 km/hr the other way, the plane will still go100km/hr

  • @stefanstalex yes, i just mean on an actual treadmil it would just hit the front and crash, its a miscommunication because people like me hear the word treadmil and think of the excersise machine, when people usually are refering to a conveyer belt. Its just people being confused with an actual treadmil and a huge conveyerbelt, it would still try to take off on a treadmil but hit the front supports lol

  • @arr5612 Lol... i think you're the only one who thought about that :D. Most people say this because they think a conveyor belt will make the plane static- like a car/human... i don't think the myth is about the plane crashing on the bars...

  • @arr5612 That's the problem of the myth, the fact that most people relate to engine-wheel-ground to gain speed, whereas a plane uses engine-propeller-air, the wheels on the plane is just to reduce friction with the ground.

The only way to do this test is not a treadmill, but a wind tunnel- which is the treadmill equivalent to a plane- now you have a decent myth, almost impossible to achieve but i think even then you will get the plane to hover.

  • This is so GD depressing. The plane only reacts with windspeed. Tie the plane to a tree, and give it a hurricane, it will take off. The treadmill has nothing to do with the plane's lift. This stupid comment thread just shows how dumb our education system is.

  • @Stammon You can say that again! I can't believe how ignorant and dumb some of these comments are. What is so hard to understand to about this? Then again, I'm not surprised. One third of the students in my physics class got a D or lower! Just pathetic.

  • @Stammon I can't believe that this conversation is still going, it's not stupidity man stupid people can usually learn things, I don't know what the hell this is

  • @Stammon "GD"? lol why not just say it? Goddamn I mean come on it's just YouTube.

  • @D119heavy GODDAMN censorship!

  • @D119heavy some people don't like to swear, because its a sin.

  • @miltonchan3 ... no it's not? what church are you doing to?

  • @genericaction

It is absolutely a sin to take the lord's name in vain. I should know, I do it often enough dealing with the idiots of the world.

  • @Stammon taking the lords name in vain isn't a sin per it's standard definition, although I was simply talking about swearing in general.

  • @genericaction being disrespectful. thats a;; i need to say.

  • @D119heavy not everyone is as vulgar as you

  • @BobtheX yeah on the cool people are. I guess if it wasn't for you super lame-o's walking around sounding like scared little kids the cool people wouldn't be as appreciated for their awesomeness

  • @D119heavy You are one pretentious bastard. *gasp* I cursed. Does that make me as cool as you?

  • @D119heavy well when people lack arguments, like you, they start to pick on other irelevant things, like you just did.

  • @Stammon No kidding. Literally even a five minute study of something called LIFT would have solved this issue? Oh wait, it wasn't even an issue.

  • @Stammon its called lift, you know how you get that?, Speed, you know what you remove by keeping the plane in the same place?, speed.

    you see it?

  • @COldfusionstorm

    SIGH!!!

No, you do not get lift from speed. You get lift from Bernoulli's Effect across the wings. Put the airplane in a box and make it go a thousand miles an hour, nothing will happen even though the airplane has "speed". Tie the airplane to a tree, and get a big fan to flow air across the wings. If the air moves fast enough to create enough lift the airplane will take off.

  • It is air flow across the wings that generate lift. The air flowing across the top of the wing travels a longer distance than the air across the bottom. That differential distance generates differential pressure, enough air flow and the lack of pressure across the top of the wing will "suck" the wing up, and the airplane with it. Putting the airplane on a treadmill to make the wheels spin does NOTHING.

The quality of education in this country would be laughable if it wasn't so sad.

  • @Stammon Stammon, the experiment explained that a conveyor belt can not hold any airplane stationary like it would to a car or a human. This is why airplanes can gain forward airspeed and take off with no problem on a conveyor belt moving at the same speed. You were assuming the plane would be held stationary by the belt. This is impossible due to physics, your assumption was wrong. You were wrong. The plane took off from a conveyor belt matching its speed.

  • @mitchio83

Listen and learn. The only factor in the airplane taking off is the wind speed over the wings. Enough airspeed, the plane takes off, not enough, the plane does not. Whether or not the airplane is tied to anything, the conveyor belt will make no difference. The wheels might turn faster, but the airplane will increase it's speed relative to the surrounding airspeed until enough air goes over the wings to create enough lift to take off. The conveyor belt has nothing to do with it.

  • @Stammon I apparently misunderstood your post, and apparently you misunderstood mine, because we are in agreeance that a conveyor belt is incapable of holding an airplane stationary, and any plane can take off easily from any treadmill going any speed due to the propulsion method.

  • @mitchio83

I have no assumptions here. If you do not understand this, you are an ignoramus. Go off and be stupid, just be quiet about it. Please guys, help me out here, I am being drowned in a sea of dumbass.

  • @Stammon That was my point i was not refering to the speed of the wheels but of the object, and the plane obvously isnt moving when its on a convyerbelt/treadmill.

Read my post again, its not as explanatory as yours but its still fully valid.

  • @Stammon That's why it is called MYTHbusters. =]

  • @Stammon I know what you mean, i was so annoyed that this made it onto the show. Although it wasn't the first time they were looking at a myth which would have been immediately obvious had somebody taken a step back and said, "hey! why don't we actually look at this myth from the standpoint of somebody over the age of 12"

  • @Stammon i was saying that to myself when i saw the example i know that and im only 13 aka i have less experience yet i know better than mythbusters!!! in ur face mum!!

  • @Stammon Hey, I knew that in the first place, but I just wanted to see what happened. You don't have to talk nasty just because people want to test a myth.

  • @Stammon "our" education system. Be more specific. Youtube is not only US or Europe but the whole world -.-'

  • @Stammon Education system could be immaculate and people still wouldn't understand this stuff. Our Education system doesn't teach people to solve problems or understand concepts, it's developed to get them to memorize facts without thinking about them, then regurgitate those facts on to paper so they'll pass a class they hate. The only thing we teach anyone is 'play along until you're out of school.'

  • @Apocol0id So true. I've been told "fake it till you make it" so many times its not even funny.

  • @Apocol0id You simply approved - by stating what's the point of the Educational system - that it is crap. If Education means Remembering, than Education is a bad thing and not what we need. We need Understanding in order to be able to progress and evolve science (ie knowledge).

  • @Stammon The USs education system is designed to educate people enough to become competent paper pushers sitting in a cubicle.

  • @Stammon I love your comment.

  • @Stammon why dont you watch the end and pay attention to what they are actually showing in the experiment before you attempt to insult our education system?

  • ummm no that wouldnt work because its the airspead accrost the wings not the speed of the ground against the tires

  • @dragonbrings that's the thing I thought, so I just closed it....

  • uhmm... a plane uses lift to takeoff... lift around the wings... not the prop or wheels

  • 1) Hold your breath.

    2) Copy all of these steps.

    3) Go to two other video.

    4) Paste it in the comments.

If you can do all of this without breathing you're a good pot smoker

  • he's a walrus!

  • go to 0:00 to skip

  • the airplane took off

  • wtf wheres the rest of the episode?

  • investigating how "airplanes" brought down those buildings when it NEVER ever happened before, besides being one of the most structurally designed buildings in the world. Why would someone(cia, federal govt) threaten the life of others over an investigation if there is nothing to hide??

  • Power on a plane comes from the propeller not the wheels really it fucking simple.

  • i dont think this is true because its only making the plane stand by itself while the ground is moving,

since the airplane needs air to take off, the air isn't moving into its on wings making it stand perfectly still while take off is virtually impossible

  • nice

  • Silly youtube scientists, stop giving us all your ridiculous theorum and watch a video on how aeroplanes actually work before giving your ludicrous ideas and suggestions. If there was any other way for aeroplanes to be taking off, it would have been done already, you're not the person that gets paid $500,000 a year to research how to do these things.

  • i dont want to visit ann arbor

  • they didnt show it wtf

  • 0:29 what is that thing what they using for moving?

  • THIS SUBJECT IS ONLY DEBATABLE BECAUSE THERE ARE DUMBASSES IN THE WORLD a one-second examination of the question by anyone with a brain gives you your answer

  • its impossible for it to take off from the tarp, its wings must catch lift

  • @sk8rguy4life1123 Watch the result of the test. The airplane took off from the tarp, and the wings caught lift.

  • what kind of model airplane is it and where can i get one

  • adam is so damn hyper

  • Can't even put on full episodes... Hulutube sucks

  • I think they shld build this in the airports for small private jets to take off, without wasting spaces.

  • @xuyingken - It wouldn't work. Moving the ground won't shorten the required take-off distance. Moving the air would be better (but would likely cause way too much turbulence to be practical, even if it could be done cheaply enough). It's all about air-speed, not ground-speed.

  • OH! pff. I just watched the second part and I was pretty confused. I didn't know that the plane would be moving. I thought the plane would stay stationary, and the tarp would move... Even still, this myth was an epic fail. Of course the plane would take off. It has nothing to do with how fast the wheels are spinning beneath the plane, it matters how fast the planes airspeed is, to create enough lift with the wings...

  • Wow.... I have seen some pretty cheesy myths on here before, but this is just an epic fail. They are trying to defy physics...

  • MYTHBUSTERS!!!!! i got this myth from a friend... PLEASE TEST IT!!!! ok so there is this old man with a grandfather clock in one house and this ghetto teen-adult with an awesome sterio system next door. one day the teen decides to cranks his speakers all the way up... and the sound waves were so loud that they were able to effect the pendulum on the clock, throwing the whole clock foward half an hour!!! CAN YOU PLEASE TEST THIS!!!!!

  • This so so FAIL by them, u need air to flow under the wings lol

  • @gorgonzo1a What is failing is your understanding. Air does flow under the wings because the plane still moves forward exactly the same way it would on a stationary runway. The only difference is the wheels are spinning faster. The propeller pulls the plane through the air. The wheels prevent drag from the runway from slowing it down. It does not matter how fast the wheels spin.

  • i researched and researched and researched and this is what i came out...

"Momentum of the plane is not needed to fly it. Just Bernoulli's Principle and Action-Reaction Law."

    such irony...

  • What about a jet?

  • @zimtower the result would be the same. The jet engines do not act against a conveyor belt, they act against the mass of the air above the conveyor belt. That mass of air is not pulled backward by a conveyor belt or tarp. The backward motion of the belt or tarp only makes the plane's wheels spin faster. This does not add drag to the plane because of the wheel bearings.

  • *Facepalms* Just the idea is silly.. Air passes by the wings, creating lift.. It does not have anything to do with the speed of the wheels.. stupidest myth ever.

  • @grahwo thats exactly what i was thinking!

  • @grahwo and yet people out there are retarded enough to still not believe or understand it.

  • @grahwo The plane took off.

  • Who even said that this would work?

  • This would only work if Chuck Norris were the pilot.

  • If the wheels are lubricated well enough, then the tarp will do nothing more than make the wheels spin twice as fast. The plane will still be pulled forward by the propeller and the low air pressure above the wing vs the higher air pressure below the wing will suck the plane up off the ground, as usual.

  • @sk8rdman so i can see yor a smart ass

  • @sk8rdman pressure would stay the same because the air around the plane is not moving youd have to have a fan that blows the airspeed when it takes off for it to completely work

  • thats true air flies the plane not speed

  • it obviously wont work. no need to even try it. lol

  • @nsupe It did work, the plane took off fine.
