Lightwave 3D was used for many movies, even back on the Amiga PC. Lightwave 3D was used on the following recent movies for example: Battlestar Galactica TV-series, Sin City, Star Trek VI - XI, 300 and Star Wars.

I posted a video response, all the sabers in the film were done in shake using the ILM method here. I also made a macro to make it quicker to apply and tweak the glows. Great tutorials!

Ah, since we're talking about Compositing - I'm quite handy in Autodesk Combustion. and the video I have posted called "Will I ever get Widescreen right?" was on the first day when Youtube switched to WS and on a Consumer NLE program I was using for the first time. I had no Idea what size to upload in. (Standard Widescreen or HD)
