  • MOVES TO FAST????? this coming from the guy who gave thumbs up to Home Alone 3

  • @jaredbrobb1996

Listen to what he says, because he does have a point. The character did look cartoonish, lacking the weight and fleshy qualities of a real person. Now, from what I have seen in The Amazing Spider-Man trailer, they have corrected this, as the new one looks more convincing when he's webslinging. The CGI needed to catch up to Spider-Man. It improved slightly in Spider-Man 2, which was far superior to the first film.

  • It's ridiculous to suggest that the movie should have been darker. The comic, even in the early Steve Ditko days, was always pretty light which was the appeal.

  • @mrjjking77

But they still made too many mistakes in the first Spider-Man. Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane was just one of them. Constantly putting her in peril was another. Organic webslingers... The new movie looks to be much better, as it has none of these things.

  • Another bad review by Fat Ebert

  • what does does what ever a spider can didnt the old dude get

  • This movie is exactly what is supposed to be...it's not to realistic, but believable because of the likeability of Tobey and Kirsten it's spunky and youthfull and very sweet at moments...it's not Burton's Batman, but it's not supposed to be...Peter does'nt live in Bruce Wayne's world,he never did...he kinda lives in this one...Raimi really went for the original vision, the kinder gentler one from the sixties...i really have no complanints...i do but they're small ones...this movie really IS fun

  • @TETTSUUO i think its one of the best comic book movies ever made, ive never seen a movie adhere so well to its comic book roots and at the same time be an excellent movie in its own right

  • @UniteForgetLeftRight well until the batman reboot came along of course

  • this movie is stupid as shit

  • "Artificial cartoon character"

Yeah, the actual Spider-Man was unavailable for filming, so they went with CGI...

  • I have to agree with Roger Ebert on this movie because I did not like the scenes of Harry (plays by James Franco) made a rude comment at Mary Jane (plays by Kirsten Dunst), the officer yelled at Peter after he defeated Bone Saw (plays by Randy Savage "Macho-Man") at the wrestling match, the other officer (plays by Myk Watford) was going to place Spider-Man under arrest after he rescued the woman's baby from their apartment that the Green Goblin was destroying.

  • Who ever that guy is with the glasses was just nit picking at this movie

  • People still use the term pickles to describe someone in danger? pickles?

  • Comment removed

  • perfunctory

  • I would love to taste Dunst's vagina.

  • I actually agree with Ebert a bit. It wasn't that he moved too fast per say, but rather that he didn't feel like his body had any actual weight to it. This is simply an issue with the special effects though. The second film did a good job fixing that issue and I would generally provide it a decent recommendation.

  • EBERT=UGLY

    FANS=LOSERS

  • @TheBitchinbabs You mean:

    DUNN = Stupid

    Fan = Rednecks

    ?

  • Special effects in this movie are great and Spidey's moves are awesome and realistic! Ebert talks nonsense!

  • Spider-Man1 = 6.5/10

    Spider-Man 2 = 9/10

    Spider-Man 3 = 5/10.

  • This movie is CLASSIC! one of the best!

  • the trolley car scene was awesome!

  • Moves to fast?? Really now??? That is your nit pick???? This coming from the man who gave a thumbs up to Cop & A Half.

  • @Humanoidfreak

Have you ever seen Cop and a Half?

  • @Humanoidfreak XD good one.

  • The jumping isn't realistic? Here is eberts review in a nutshell. "How he all spider powers? That don't make no sense, that is impossible."

  • Good movie. But sorry Eberts right on this one.

  • THIS IS THE FUCKING LAST STRAW

    FUCK THESE GUYS

  • ebert's critique on spidermans cgi is spot on....spiderman looks like hes made

out of rubber....the cgi in the spiderman trilogy is awful....the whole crane scene in spiderman 3 looks 5 years out of date

  • strange. ebert gave a thumbs up on his website, but thumbs down on this show.

  • @500ncb He didn't; he gave it 2 1/2 stars in the paper and on the website, which as high as he can go without recommending it.

  • @michaelthemovieman oops. i made a mistake. i thought he gave 3.

  • Spiderman: 5 / 10

    Spiderman 2: 6 / 10

    Spiderman 3: 4 / 10

  • Movest to fast? has he seen a spider actual move those things can fucking move

  • spiderman moves to fast mr. ebert??? he is fucking spiderman!!!

  • @hoolio35 He's talking about the way he falls, and the way he moves. You can still move quickly without looking like you're light as a feather. Did you ever see the blooper real with the Pac-Man pellets? That's what this looked like.

I think Roeper is more forgiving being younger and used to CGI, while Ebert wants the more realistic look of in camera effects. It took a while before CGI got good enough for that.

(And don't tell me hoodie Spiderman looked real. Yuck.)

  • Isn't it cute how Roeper pretends the CGI of the first Spider-Man actually looked good?

  • I think its strange ebert was arguing physics about a comic book character named spiderman.

  • CGI killed handcraft model making, real stunt work. I mean, this character and movie really has to depend on the tech for some of the action of course. okay. Roger is right, just too fakey and we're still seeing the effects of this trend in super hero movies. I also think casting was completely awful, except Defoe, perfect for Osborne. Movies dated bad.

  • @wendileona Hey, don't forget the perfect cast choice of J Jonah Jameson too, dude.

  • 33 people liked this review? What is wrong with them; further more what is wrong with Ebert? This is the first live interpretation of Spiderman to get it right in over 40 years. Peter is a Kid when he gets his powers. Any kid would not freak out he would be excited, until he makes a mistake or mutates further.

  • Spider Man 3's fatal flaw was that they added Venom when there was no room for the character. Perhaps they should have left him at the end as a cliffhanger, but that to me was the worst thing.

  • @RichardKleiner I disagree. The fatal flaw was turning Sandman into a hot tempered moronic pussy. Sandman should not have been in Spiderman 3.

  • @BondFreek plus that. I try to forget about that scene with Emo Peter dancing :O

  • @BondFreek Negative. Sandman was fine, just another more talented naturalistic actor should have played him, and the movie should've done more to tell his story. Where the film goes wrong is trying to tell the story of Venom, and including Gwen as a secondary character when she is a fundamental and intrinsic character to the Spidey universe who deserves her own treatment. In short, the last movie should've sought to deal with Sandman and resolve Harry.

  • @thinlizzybone I disagree. The only good part of having Sandman in the movie was the FX. Venom is a much more interesting character that touches on our dark half, which is what the movie was about. How we each deal with our dark half.

  • Fuckin intellectuals.

  • @thinlizzybone HAY! I'm an intellectual, and I love this movie! The problem with critics is that if you don't make the movie the way they would have they will hate it and Damn with everything they were taught in film school.

  • I'm with ebert on this. I didn't find this movie remotely exciting to watch because it was like watching a cartoon interact with people in fight sequences. Besides, what he failed to mention, was that the Green Goblin, instead of being menacing, was like something out of the Power Rangers tv show.

  • "He moves too fast.".; He's fuckin' Spider-Man!?

  • I thought the 'Spider-Man' movies were pretty good.; I saw all 3 of them on Opening Day & I will admit they were pretty good, in my view.

  • The Spiderman movies are excellent ---

  • Moves to fast? He's fucking SPIDER-MAN!

  • @tylermane77 Word

  • @tylermane77 I was just going to say the exact same thing

  • I just need to say this...

that kid at 1:32 is just plain stupid.

  • @pvtsorrel what do you mean by that shawshank sucks?

  • Well, it was just the first movie, of course it wont be exactly perfect but in the 2nd one it greatly improved

  • @abcldeefcgh Well the 2nd Spiderman placed more of an emphasis on Peter's life and his struggles as spiderman and developed the characters much more. Which is one of the reasons why many consider the 2nd to be better than the first.

  • kirsten is realy annoying in these movies

  • Thumbs down from Roger? Shame on you!

  • The new Spider-man looks promising.

  • Ebert does nothing but nit pick. All of his points are completely irrelevent.

  • @kingofcrime87 Actually, it was Gene Siskel who nitpicked a lot. In fact, he actually thought Pee-Wee's Big Adventure was one of the worst films of 1985.

  • Ebert, my man first thumbs down to BATMAN 89 and now this?

Whatever, you're still a great critic.

I'm with Roeper on this one though. I love this movie.

  • @SLPIFan In his defense, Batman had aspects to it that were ridiculous, such as the Prince music. Also, Burton movies are often very polarizing, so I'm not really surprised.

  • "The movie could've done more with the scenes where Peter Parker leanrs of his new powers.".; I will say that part of the movie is really my only gripe about it, but, even still, it border-lines on nit-picking, a small, minor detail & a more-so personal preference.

  • I'm no comic book reader, and I prefer Superman and Batman to Spidey, but in terms of the films alone:

Spider-Man was like a candy bar: fun, sweet, and a bit satisfying, just don't expect too much substance or real value (outside of that decision scene with Mary Jane and the trolley car, I disagreee with Ebert, that WAS a great scene.)

Spider-Man 2 was like the main course at a 5-star restaurant, GREATLY statisfying, behind Superman II and The Dark Knight.

    Spider-Man 3 was just JUNK.

    :)

  • @obiwanobiwan13 I think that Spider-Man 2 is just slightly better than The Dark Knight. This is coming from a fanboy of both movies. I really liked Superman II, but I didn't think it was as good as 1, and not as good as Spider-Man 2.

  • mary jane's tits!

  • Comment removed

  • Rog should watch the behind the scenes stuff on dvd.

  • GIVE THUMBS DOWN TO ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES WILL YOU!!!!!?????? DUDE...HE'S SUPPOSED TO BE FAST!!! HE'S SUPER AGILE HENCE THE NAME SPIDER-MAN!!!!

  • @ghostbusters1235 Ebert fucking loved the second one. He named it the fourth best film of the year.

  • Comment removed

  • I adored Spider Mans 1 and 2.

  • Ebert's analysis of Spider-man fails to take into account that Peter Parker has "the proportionate strength and agility of a spider". He needs to go back home and jack off to Aristotle's three act paradigm while remembering that, after all, he is in fact, just a big fat loser who cannot relate to what the movie was intended to be . . . an adaptation to a FUCKING COMIC BOOK!!!

  • this was awesome; stop rating it down for lack of logic SCREW LOGIC

  • Spider-Man : 8.5 / 10

    Spider-Man 2 : 9 / 10

    Spider-Man 3 : 7/10

  • Pretty reasonable, but I just love Spider-Man, so here are my ratings.

    Spider-Man: 9/10

    Spider-Man 2: 10/10

    Spider-Man 3: 7.5/10

  • @moviebuffreviews

Spider-Man 2' gets a perfect 10/10, in your view...: WOW!!!

Shocker alert! Never expected that one.

  • @moviebuffreviews exactly how i would rate them, spot on.

  • @MTTT19 Spiderman 3 was one of the biggest letdowns of all movies. 0/10

  • @MTTT19 There were pointless extras and supporting characters in Spider-Man 2, if you watch the Nostalgia Critic.

  • @MTTT19 i think you are being way too kind to sp3 lol.

  • @MTTT19 Spider Man 3 3/10

  • Spiderman: 7.5/10

    Spiderman 2: 9.0/10

    Spiderman 3: 1.5/10

  • Spider-man 10/10

    Spider-man 2 10/10

    Spider-man 3 2/10

  • Spiderman 1, 7/10

    Spiderman 2, 5/10

    Spiderman 3, 2.5/10

  • @Maximillionaire666 5/10 for Spiderman 2? Worst ratings ever.

  • I will agree with Richard Roeper. Why should Roger Ebert hate this movie? This is an awesome superhero flick. I'll give Spiderman two big thumbs up! This should've won the Best Visual Effects Oscar though I don't mind The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers winning some. But way to go, Spiderman!

  • I agree with Ebert in the sense that CGI doesn't really work all that often.

  • i think the movie is a modern classic, i dont think ebert ever read comic books

  • 3:53 Roeper: "That's a good scene!"

    3:54 Ebert: "Okay, it isn't."

  • All right, how many people viewing this video who were pissed off about Roeper liking Star Wars Episode II are now acting like hypocrites and saying good things about Roeper and Bad things about Ebert for agreeing and disagreeing with you?

  • NO, CAN THE REBOOT.

  • first he hates Jumanju for having too much special effects and no story and now he's complaining about Spider-man's effects even with its story?

  • I have to agree with Ebert on the fact that the special effects were awful.

  • @phxsns1 Indeed. It looks atrociously fake, but if you look at it from a different point of view, it actually helps to enhance the comic-book feel.

  • dis is the only spiderman ovie that was good the other 2 blew ass

  • @The420ishere1 You are ignorant if you think that. 2 was much more widely praised and for good reason. 2 is the only good one. The other two are okay at best.

  • @JudgeMagisterDelita dude it doesnt stay true to the comics sam raimi changed the whole thing

  • @The420ishere1 Are you retarded? Spiderman 2 is the best of the trilogy.

  • @j04370859 dude that movie didnt have alot of action and was not that interesting i say the first one was the best but a reboot is also the best idea

  • @The420ishere1 Dude the 2nd one had a better story with emotion, better dialogue, better special effects and a better villian.

  • @j04370859 but its not the same spiderman if sam raimi changed the whole fuken movie

  • What is ebert talking about. The first spiderman was fantastic.

  • Does Ebert like any movies?

  • @PersonalJesus348 . could you give another example of a movie you liked that he didnt?

  • @SparksDrinker

    Batman Returns

  • @SparksDrinker . well then ebert and i have something in common, batman returns was trash.

  • @SparksDrinker and the original Batman?

  • @hackensac . which was original? early 90's with keaton and nicholson? or adam west?

  • @hackensac the first Burton film

  • @hackensac . with keaton and nicholson, yeah, what about it?

  • @SparksDrinker thumbs up or thumbs down? Ebert Gave thumbs down to both burton batman films. then he gave thumbs up to batman forever

Still, he gave Jumanji thumbs down for the opposite reasons from this review.

    Jumanji= good effects no story

Spider-man= good story, not on par effects

  • @hackensac Ebert gave thumbs down to Batman Forever as well. He hated all 4 of the original Batman series.

  • Spider-Man needed to talk more! he needed to be jokey; my ONLY complaint about this film is that Tobey didn't free himself as Spider-Man

  • Grandpa was confused by the special effects.

  • i usually dont agree with Roeper but here he is right

  • He moves to fast well duh he's not human he's super human.

  • damn he looks fat

  • Ah...as always, Ebert misses the mark when it comes to comic book movies. Distracted once again by the special effects, this guy failed to simply sit back and enjoy the ride. A movie like this isn't meant to be taken TOO seriously...since it's forced to work on 2 levels. Remember, you still have to tailor it to the child audience. So a flashy fight scene is necessary. It kept that "comic book feel" throughout all the action.

  • @AnalyticalMenace He liked the special effects of Spider-Man 2 better.

  • @jp3813 I thought the effects in the 1st were the best.

  • @dangkoen I didn't. It looked like rushed video game cutscenes.

  • @dangkoen Ebert gave thumbs down to Jumanji for the reverse reason

  • I liked this one but the second was far superior

  • this was my favourite film growing up, is was better then and I kind of agree with what they're saying, but this is a good movie.

  • @vegard930 favourite film growing up? You are still growing I presume.

  • I sorta agree with both of them, im a hugh spiderman fan and have been for a long time and was realy exited when this film finaly came out.

But had like mixed feelings when i saw it on the the one hand i thought that thoose highschool scenes were great and funny, but on the other hand Rami made him a little to boring, and the special effects when he swings through the city never impresed me and they havent improved them over the 3 films

  • I'm with Richard. I think the first Spider-Man is still the best, and I loved the scenes with Peter Parker in high school, and I liked The Green Goblin.

  • I'm with Roger on this one.

  • Same here.

Plus, the franchise went downhill from there so it's kinda dumb now although it was exciting at the time

  • great shot of spidey fighting thugs at :51. very comic booky

  • Good Review, Could you upload there review for Spider-Man 2?
