Listen to what he says, because he does have a point. The character did look cartoonish, lacking the weight and fleshy qualities of a real person. Now, from what I have seen in The Amazing Spider-Man trailer, they have corrected this, as the new one looks more convincing when he's webslinging. The CGI needed to catch up to Spider-Man. It improved slightly in Spider-Man 2, which was far superior to the first film.
It's ridiculous to suggest that the movie should have been darker. The comic, even in the early Steve Ditko days, was always pretty light which was the appeal.
But they still made too many mistakes in the first Spider-Man. Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane was just one of them. Constantly putting her in peril was another. Organic webslingers... The new movie looks to be much better, as it has none of these things.
This movie is exactly what is supposed to be...it's not to realistic, but believable because of the likeability of Tobey and Kirsten it's spunky and youthfull and very sweet at moments...it's not Burton's Batman, but it's not supposed to be...Peter does'nt live in Bruce Wayne's world,he never did...he kinda lives in this one...Raimi really went for the original vision, the kinder gentler one from the sixties...i really have no complanints...i do but they're small ones...this movie really IS fun
@TETTSUUO i think its one of the best comic book movies ever made, ive never seen a movie adhere so well to its comic book roots and at the same time be an excellent movie in its own right
I have to agree with Roger Ebert on this movie because I did not like the scenes of Harry (plays by James Franco) made a rude comment at Mary Jane (plays by Kirsten Dunst), the officer yelled at Peter after he defeated Bone Saw (plays by Randy Savage "Macho-Man") at the wrestling match, the other officer (plays by Myk Watford) was going to place Spider-Man under arrest after he rescued the woman's baby from their apartment that the Green Goblin was destroying.
I actually agree with Ebert a bit. It wasn't that he moved too fast per say, but rather that he didn't feel like his body had any actual weight to it. This is simply an issue with the special effects though. The second film did a good job fixing that issue and I would generally provide it a decent recommendation.
@hoolio35 He's talking about the way he falls, and the way he moves. You can still move quickly without looking like you're light as a feather. Did you ever see the blooper real with the Pac-Man pellets? That's what this looked like.
I think Roeper is more forgiving being younger and used to CGI, while Ebert wants the more realistic look of in camera effects. It took a while before CGI got good enough for that.
(And don't tell me hoodie Spiderman looked real. Yuck.)
CGI killed handcraft model making, real stunt work. I mean, this character and movie really has to depend on the tech for some of the action of course. okay. Roger is right, just too fakey and we're still seeing the effects of this trend in super hero movies. I also think casting was completely awful, except Defoe, perfect for Osborne. Movies dated bad.
33 people liked this review? What is wrong with them; further more what is wrong with Ebert? This is the first live interpretation of Spiderman to get it right in over 40 years. Peter is a Kid when he gets his powers. Any kid would not freak out he would be excited, until he makes a mistake or mutates further.
Spider Man 3's fatal flaw was that they added Venom when there was no room for the character. Perhaps they should have left him at the end as a cliffhanger, but that to me was the worst thing.
@BondFreek Negative. Sandman was fine, just another more talented naturalistic actor should have played him, and the movie should've done more to tell his story. Where the film goes wrong is trying to tell the story of Venom, and including Gwen as a secondary character when she is a fundamental and intrinsic character to the Spidey universe who deserves her own treatment. In short, the last movie should've sought to deal with Sandman and resolve Harry.
@thinlizzybone I disagree. The only good part of having Sandman in the movie was the FX. Venom is a much more interesting character that touches on our dark half, which is what the movie was about. How we each deal with our dark half.
@thinlizzybone HAY! I'm an intellectual, and I love this movie! The problem with critics is that if you don't make the movie the way they would have they will hate it and Damn with everything they were taught in film school.
I'm with ebert on this. I didn't find this movie remotely exciting to watch because it was like watching a cartoon interact with people in fight sequences. Besides, what he failed to mention, was that the Green Goblin, instead of being menacing, was like something out of the Power Rangers tv show.
@abcldeefcgh Well the 2nd Spiderman placed more of an emphasis on Peter's life and his struggles as spiderman and developed the characters much more. Which is one of the reasons why many consider the 2nd to be better than the first.
@kingofcrime87 Actually, it was Gene Siskel who nitpicked a lot. In fact, he actually thought Pee-Wee's Big Adventure was one of the worst films of 1985.
@SLPIFan In his defense, Batman had aspects to it that were ridiculous, such as the Prince music. Also, Burton movies are often very polarizing, so I'm not really surprised.
"The movie could've done more with the scenes where Peter Parker leanrs of his new powers.".; I will say that part of the movie is really my only gripe about it, but, even still, it border-lines on nit-picking, a small, minor detail & a more-so personal preference.
I'm no comic book reader, and I prefer Superman and Batman to Spidey, but in terms of the films alone:
Spider-Man was like a candy bar: fun, sweet, and a bit satisfying, just don't expect too much substance or real value (outside of that decision scene with Mary Jane and the trolley car, I disagreee with Ebert, that WAS a great scene.)
Spider-Man 2 was like the main course at a 5-star restaurant, GREATLY statisfying, behind Superman II and The Dark Knight.
@obiwanobiwan13 I think that Spider-Man 2 is just slightly better than The Dark Knight. This is coming from a fanboy of both movies. I really liked Superman II, but I didn't think it was as good as 1, and not as good as Spider-Man 2.
Ebert's analysis of Spider-man fails to take into account that Peter Parker has "the proportionate strength and agility of a spider". He needs to go back home and jack off to Aristotle's three act paradigm while remembering that, after all, he is in fact, just a big fat loser who cannot relate to what the movie was intended to be . . . an adaptation to a FUCKING COMIC BOOK!!!
I will agree with Richard Roeper. Why should Roger Ebert hate this movie? This is an awesome superhero flick. I'll give Spiderman two big thumbs up! This should've won the Best Visual Effects Oscar though I don't mind The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers winning some. But way to go, Spiderman!
All right, how many people viewing this video who were pissed off about Roeper liking Star Wars Episode II are now acting like hypocrites and saying good things about Roeper and Bad things about Ebert for agreeing and disagreeing with you?
@The420ishere1 You are ignorant if you think that. 2 was much more widely praised and for good reason. 2 is the only good one. The other two are okay at best.
Ah...as always, Ebert misses the mark when it comes to comic book movies. Distracted once again by the special effects, this guy failed to simply sit back and enjoy the ride. A movie like this isn't meant to be taken TOO seriously...since it's forced to work on 2 levels. Remember, you still have to tailor it to the child audience. So a flashy fight scene is necessary. It kept that "comic book feel" throughout all the action.
I sorta agree with both of them, im a hugh spiderman fan and have been for a long time and was realy exited when this film finaly came out.
But had like mixed feelings when i saw it on the the one hand i thought that thoose highschool scenes were great and funny, but on the other hand Rami made him a little to boring, and the special effects when he swings through the city never impresed me and they havent improved them over the 3 films

I'm with Richard. I think the first Spider-Man is still the best, and I loved the scenes with Peter Parker in high school, and I liked The Green Goblin.

Same here.
Plus, the franchise went downhill from there so it's kinda dumb now although it was exciting at the time
