@imamovic2 indeed. the only machines that could continue to operate would be those which do not need electrics of any kind to operate, such as sailing vessels and steam locomotives and there are so damned few of those left around the world that they would just provide a drop in the bucket in an attempt to keep up and even if enough of these machines could be brought to bear on the world after such an event, the skills needed to operate and maintain them are just as rare.
@houndjog ...yes, the power plants will be fine, but the transformers outside the factory which convert high voltage electricity into low voltage electricity for the household appliances. (if this was not done, the high voltage electricity would blow up your television, or, as you Americans say it, TV and other of your household appliances.) So, due to the transformers problem, no type of power plant will be able to supply electricity.

I've got a few solar panels. Having them is part of being prepared for disaster. There any number of disasters that could take out the power grid though. A solar ejection is only one of them.

Unless you're living near a river or you've got your own well, what are you going to do for water? Within days, 300 million Americans will face imminent death from dehydration. When the power goes, there's no more farming because modern industrial framing requires irrigation, which requires electricity to pump water. No farming, no food. Realistically, how much food and water can you store for the future? And when you've downed your last bottle of water and feasted on your last can of sardines, what then? If such a solar storm ever hit earth, we would all be goners in just a few weeks.

The answer. Seriously, invest immediately in Faraday cages and boxes for your Electrial equipment. Invest in solar panels and DC-AC inverters. Obviously store them in a Faraday environment during a storm. download all the survival data you can, and PRINT IT OUT. THere will be a warning, not much, but a warning. Fill your baths with water and bottle as much as U can. Seal your cell phones MP3 players etc in a disconnected microwave oven if U have, It's a natural Faraday box. Torches & tin food.

better be prepared than sorry. whether this is truly going to happen or not. it's better to be prepared. i got a suggestion, maybe each home should install solar panel so atleast there's still a usable amount of electricity that can be used in case of emergency for every house hold. i think that will work.....

I've got a few solar panels. Having them is part of being prepared for disaster. There any number of disasters that could take out the power grid though. A solar ejection is only one of them.
A good place to learn about preparedness is the survivalpodcast.
The funny thing is that most of the things I do to prepare for disaster also benefit me even if there is no disaster. I recomend episode 319 if you're wondering how.

Also consider this: is it predicted that in the event of a nuclear war the use of Electric Magnetic Pulses -generated by nuclear weapons being detonated in the upper atmosphere- will be the first stage of the attack, EMPs knock out power, and if some nations do not realize that this was caused by the sun they may think that they are under attack, and may launch their own missiles.

@cronesius Your right, an event of this magnitude is highly unlikely (The last one occurred in 1859 [The Carrington Event] and are a 1:500 year event), but a severe solar storm is possible in this cycle, and NOAA and NASA are holding a conference on it in Washington D.C. called the Space Weather Emergency Forum. More than likely, we would see something more similar to Quebec in 1989. It will be bad, but for most places, the blackout will take no more than a few months.

The "evidence" compiled for some major 2012 apocalypse is pure bull, seeing the same stupidity and disasters that have plagued humanity since the beginning of time and interpreting it as "signs" for some sort of trumped-up apocalypse.

This docu-drama is pretty silly. When the power goes, so goes the water supply because you can't pump the water through the pipes any more. Unless you're living near a river or you've got your own well, what are you going to do for water? Within days, 300 million Americans will face imminent death from dehydration. How do you recover from that? Even if you've got water, how will food reach you if there is no commerce, no shipping, no transportation?

When the power goes, there's no more farming because modern industrial framing requires irrigation, which requires electricity to pump water. No farming, no food. Realistically, how much food and water can you store for the future? And when you've downed your last bottle of water and feasted on your last can of sardines, what then? If such a solar storm ever hit earth, we would all be goners in just a few weeks.

The answer. Seriously, invest immediately in Faraday cages and boxes for your Electrial equipment. Invest in solar panels and DC-AC inverters. Obviously store them in a Faraday environment during a storm. download all the survival data you can, and PRINT IT OUT. THere will be a warning, not much, but a warning. Fill your baths with water and bottle as much as U can. Seal your cell phones MP3 players etc in a disconnected microwave oven if U have, It's a natural Faraday box. Torches & tin food.

Best thing to do is to move to the country and learn how to grow your own food and hopefully have access to running water. If not, then move to less populated cities.
