I love the music of Hendrix among other many great artists but the truth about the covers of this song is that Hendrix attended a party where Dave played this in front of him and you can see how Hendrix was inspired by this version ! Two greats !!!!!
FYI, Mason played acoustic on the Hendrix version, but then, apparently, the next day Jimi decided he didn't like how the acoustic sounded, so he recorded over Dave's track. But I've read recently that the track is Mason. Whatever the case, Mason's take on Watchtower was heavily influenced by his good friend, Jimi Hendrix. Love this version. Lead played on a Gibson Firebird (same guitar used on Freebird by Allen Collins).
This isn't bad but it is definitely not as good as Hendrix. I don't know what some people are smoking but it isn't pot. PCP maybe? Anyway I don't want to disrespect a pretty good guitarist because some people are out of their fucking minds. The guy is good.
Best All Along the Tower version or cover (in my opinion) like it better than Hendrix, and so many others, besides Mason Played acoustic on Hendrix'es Original
(note: I Also been to a bunch of Mr. Mason concerts way back to the mid 70's and the 80's.
I had the pleasure of attending many of Mr. Mason's concerts!! Been a fan since the early 70's!! Amazzing gutair player!! Better live!! God Bless him!!
@jgmh7357 I've been a fan since the early 70s also, or really since the 60s with Traffic, but have never seen him. I'll finally be seeing him in about 2 weeks in a small club....3rd row center. Can't wait!
@jgmh7357 I've never been to a Dave Mason show that wasn't great. The guys got waaaay more material that most people are aware of. And the guys a riot on stage too.
the other guitarist on this version of All Along the Watchtower, is Jim Krueger (now deceased). I have this concert performance on laser disk... the two of them together are just incredible and you can see Mason, no slouch himself... in total awe of Jim's talent... thanks for making this available!
This is the best version and the ending solo just rips, love the sound of his Firebird and his band just smokes if you had a chance to see him in the early 70's that was my favorite time for his tone of guitar, and changed his sound some after around 76 but of course still great, he actually gets better as he gets older that can't be said for alot of them....
Mike Finnigan on B3. He's the greatest musician you never heard of. Currently, he tours with Joe Cocker, and he's toured with Crosby Stills & Nash since 1980.
There probably were to many "best of" albums for Mason, Traffic, and Cocker too but the Dave Mason live album around 1980 was incredible and included this, though not live, go figure.
I love the sound he gets from his guitar. I've said on other sites where his version of this song is played, that this is the best version ever recorded even though much bigger names with bigger reputations have made names on this song.
@ls1959 Hey I agree I like Dave's version best and have posted that several times too. Most people don't even realize Dave played the acoustic guitar on Jimi Hendrix's album when he recorded it.
wow this fucking rock dear Vel didn't I told ya' this is the best cover of All Along the watchtower for sure and 100% sure i am adding it and sending to heaven and earth since is the best of the west just listen to the acoustic and the lead no one can do better
dave does this so much better than hendrix. his voice is outstanding. hendrix was always too fucked up to do it justice.

Check out the "Night of Guitars" cover from 1988 or 1989. Great lineup of guitarists; excellent cover. Steve Howe, Roby Krieger and others.
