Dear God I have been looking for this recording for years! I had the song long ago but lost it, and have dug through tons of other artists playing it and none match Itzhak!
These sonatas were initially conceptualised for Lute or guitar - not the violin. It is easy to loose the flow of the chords on the violin, a fact that makes most interpretations sound a bit awkward when compared with guitar. Perlman is great, but Vengerov's interpretation, the more "hollow" style with less vibrato brings this out better.
@letungo I personally like this rendition. Sure it doesn't sound that baroque, but Itzhak Perlman can play it any way he wants... so why not like this? Why not be original?
To the morons out there that didn't understand my old comment on this video. I was simply stating this guy plays violin so beautifully, that our god could even learn music from him (slightly blasphemus but hey)... So now that i just explained, i don't want any stupid crap in my inbox anymore asking what i mean... It's just totally stupid that i can't make a simple comment without someone having to know what every word i type actually means.
Culture has little to do with the assessment of quality in an absolute sense. Fact is Bach's music is far more highly developed than compared with that of any other culture.
There is absolutely no doubt about Bach's religious fervour, but you are talking here about a sarabande, i.e a dance, (apparently a spanish originated natality dance?..)... I don't think they used to dance in the church, when a baby was born.. lol..
Certainly, it's absolutely gorgeous, but it's a very, VERY romantic interpretation of Bach. Too busy. Too emotional and passionate without that feeling of religiousness and prayer that solo Bach needs. Don't take my words as putting down Perlman. I love his playing and I could never surpass him, but he has the chops to make any piece sound exactly like what's in his head. In this instance, it just doesn't agree with me. Vengerov's interpretation is very emotional while being very appropriate
I don't like Vengerov's "acting", it's all not about being appropriate or not it's being about playing with heart not with head, Bach would like every TRUE version of his piece and this is as true as you can get....
I can tell you're probably not a violinist, Jonsson. Although I do agree that heart is essential to musicality, too much ruins Bach. Bach is religious music. It's about being sincere. It's about being prestine, clean, and warm. Too much romanticism screws that up. Bach's music isn't about the performer. It isn't even about Bach. It's about the music itself. The music and God, to which he dedicated every single one of his works. Perlman's playing is better geared toward romantic-era masterworks.
Well in fact I am a violonist and I am soooo much against playing "according" to the era when the piece was created. Bach's music first of all is about music and music always should involve individual feelings and what goes after individual interpretation, than on the second place things like "Bach composed for God", era and so on....
And if Bach's music isn't romantic why has he's music been re-discovered in romantic era by Mendelssohn? Don't stick so strongly to historical standards. :)
impossible. the spirituality of whatever religion or beliefs or whatever alternate spirituality one suscribes to transcends into the music not only in its conception and composition but also in its reinterpretation by others. However, i do agree with you that pety religious controversies on youtube should be avoided. let the music do the arguing. :)
though you may use an idea such as religion as motivation to play or write better... The actual mathematics of why something sounds the way it does is not related to religion.
The ability to play with "feeling" is a bunch of calculations by your brain to make what you want to hear. The notion that the music transcends ordinary things and is a huge religious thing is bullcrap. It may be affiliated with the church... but the actually sound waves have nothing to do with a religion.
i could not agree with you more. your comment and mine are not in conflict. i find spirituality in the infinitely complex relations between the mathematics of the music and the chemicals it sets off in our brain. The greeks described astronomy as a science of how tangible objects relate to each other, and music as the science of how intangible and invisible objects relate to each other.
I believe that this version of the music is beautiful, but i find it more moving in the hands of others because the spirituality factor is much greater. Just for the record, i am not saying this comes from a god (i am atheist).
Until a human brain comes to interpret it, music is nothing but sound. Culture plays a gigantic role in what we thinks sounds good.
This music is western, a culture highly inspired by the church. Ergo, to really appreciate this music is to know God in a sense, whether we believe in it or not.
Bach's music was forgotten and Mendelssohn led a rebirth in interest for his music, and trust me when I say his music was for God himself.
He dedicated every single piece, no matter how small, to God almighty, and let it be known in the manuscript himself.
I am not religious myself, but it is with that reverence in mind that I believe Bach should be interpreted. It isn't romantic music because a romantic composer liked it, y'know =P
he plays like a monkey.very hard for Bach without understanding the music he plays, like almost all the mainstream players.Listen to kuijken's playing for this piece.
Are you joking!!!??? This is Itzhak Perlman you're taking about! He's one of the greatest violinists of our time, and 135628910 you have no right to say that about him. To criticize one aspect of his playing is one thing. To call his playing "like a monkey" is another. And, of course Perlman understands the music. I'm sure he understands it better than you could ever hope to. Don't make a post like that. It doesn't impress anyone, and you make yourself look like a fool.
I played this back in February for a competition for my youth orchestra and it was a huge demand. I really envy Perlman for his musicianship and talent, in many regards, he is my idol :]

Sara lost everything in the fall of man
Like dead leaves
So she now plays on the street
With a box so neat
Shes a one man band
Making her last stand with a sarabande
She pawned her wedding band long ago in a foreign land
So this is Saras last dance
This, her Chinamans chance.

Bueno pollo,JSB es poliédrico.Perfecto y con múltiples aristas.Eso le convierte en el músico mayor y mejor de todos los tiempos.
Pero no es patrimonio de ninguna cultura, religión o época.
