The a/c in the center foreground at 1:59 was flown at one time by my good friend Loyd Adamson. It was one of the most photographed B-17s of WWII and was even on a postage stamp years ago. The picture was part of a photo shoot done in 1944 by Life magazine and was taken from one of the unit's beater aircraft. Loyd went on to fly KC-97s, KC-135s and SA-16s and also founded the USAF Survival School in Labrador. Time finally took him in '08. I still think about him almost every day.
Thanks for this. My dad flew in a B-17 crew with the 94th Bomb Group out of England. He was a Bombardier and was shot down into the English Channel on February 13, 1944. Two of the crew couldn't swim and he kept all three of them afloat until they were finally rescued by a British minesweeper. He went on to fly almost 50 more missions. He died in March of 2006 at 84 and I miss him more every day.
Just saw this 12/2011. I'll have to ask my dad if he knows the name. He served in the 532nd July 1943 to 8 Oct 1943 then POW until the end. Cecil W. Quinley (95 now). Jack Pry crew shot down over Bremmen in the Feather Merchant.
I say again now, like i've said before, Men of this calibre are not around in abundance anymore, these were men who took their responsibility's serious, Country, Family, Wifes, (GIrlfriends) I'll fight for them, But, lets not forget, this happened on both sides
seeing things like this make me wonder why some european countries hate us so much today. america saved them from nazi rule and they say they hate us. it just doesnt make sense
i seen a b17 in ocala florida and also a b25 flew in with her they where going to the municipal airport for people to come and look at them and you could get a flight in them :) they where not as big as i expected but they where still big:) and godbless anyone who flew in them during WW2
to your dad: my grandpa was a b-17 bombardier in the hunhound he got shot down from an ME-109 he is still alive and i say to you him and all of the veterans thank you for serving our country. god bless america. oh and OH MY GAWD U GOT THE MAGIC NUMBER 25 MISSIONS!!!!!!!
Thank you for posting this video of a true American Hero! I thank your dad and every WW2 vet every day. I will NEVER forget what they ALL did for US!!!
I just lost a good friend of mine, Lloyd Krueger, a B-17 navigator on June 6th, 2010. I miss him.....and feel your loss.
To the Chase family: Have been watching B17 videos today, thinking about my dad who died in 2001 just prior to 911. My dad was my hero and always be. He couldn't wait to graduate his senior year so that he could enlist and was graduated in Feb. on his 18th birthday. Had been flying since 13 so was able to pilot a B17 at age 20 from 1944-45. God bless these fine men and their memories. They will live on in our hearts forever. Miss you, dad.
as i child i had an old man in our little home town who repaired tvs. ...he only had one arm..his right one s i recall was amputated abobe the wrist. as a teen ,i would cut his grass for spending money...i asked him one day how he lost his hand... " i was a tail gunner in a b-17 in the pacific...a jap cannon shell got my arm...from that day forward ..he was my "hero"
My dad flew in B17's in Europe. During one mission he saw the tail shot off of another B17 with one of his buddies going down trapped in it. He still has nightmares about it. Rest in Peace, Mr. Chase.
It's so great to see these heros get to fly in one of the planes that changed their lives forever. My father piloted the real 909 on his last mission in 1944. When he and his fellow crew member and ball turret gunner got a complimentary flight a few years ago the gleam in their eyes was unbelievable.
@flysinthewind My grandmother remembered the American bombers flying high in the sky,she said she saw at least a 1000 bombers everyday on their way to Germany and the British Lancasters flew during the night they were so many bombers that she couldnt sleep because of the noise. Anyway, thank you America and Britain for liberating The Netherlands and Europe.
No matter if he was a tail gunner, a navigator , bombadier or pilot. Those men all contributed to the liberation of europe and holland(where i live) and i think there are lots of people that remain thankfull for the job they did back then today!
@ossie19681 I agree with ossie. I grew up in Holland but live now in Canada. However I was born way after the war it still had a great impact on my life.
Thanks to men like your father people like me and so many others could grow up in peace. We are in debt with them forever. Thanks.
The hospital quanset hut behind the monument is the museum, run by my good friends. I live in the north of England so don't get down to Ridgewell as often as I'd like. The old picturehouse with Chaplain Good-Brown's chapel still exists in the dip below where the monument is. Plus one area of quonset huts in the distance. My friend served in the McDonald crew of the 532nd sqdn, 381st BG in "French Dressing" 1945. If your father served at that time I may have something that will interest you.
Imagine your 23 years old..34,000 feet over germany during world war 2..there is no time for fear only honor. God Bless all of them that made it and RIP for the ones that werent so lucky. God Bless

Did this gentleman serve in the 532nd sqdn of the 381st BG at Ridgewell? I had a friend who served in the same unit.
Wingdoss 3 years ago
yes he did. What was your friends name?
Dad, mom, my wife and I visited Ridgewell 10 years ago together.
All that was left was beautiful farm field with one building and a monument to the 381st.
