  • small turn..small turn ..little bit up ....little bit up there...one more...small turn....BOOOOOMMMM XDD

  • oh yeah he is acting real educated right now

  • 1:11 "The tuning principals are the same as they were with the bass drum!" (c)

I thought he'd say next "Yep! Please, don't thank me! See you in next tutorial of series "As simple as smth else" :))

  • shit thats what my snare drum sounds like! gotta get some new drums

  • I just broke my snare wire while trying to tune my snare ! :S

  • 0:34 How my snare which is part of a 4 grand kit sounds like now coz i tried tuning it,probally even worse

  • Dude Your Funny LOL

  • Your little trick?

  • whats a full half turn?

  • @colingtr1 It's a quarter of a double turn.

  • a full half turn ? what the hell :D

  • God when he first hits the snare it sounds like Lar's one in St Anger....eeeewwww

  • lol can you even buy a $30 snare drum?

  • @aussiedrummer100 yeap there is a jinbaw one XD

  • The Evans DATK Magnetic Torque Drum Key helps and much easier than a regular drum key.

  • @CarlosMacMartin It's not about the drum key it's about the drummer...

  • "A full half turn" haha

  • @pb0o6 "a full-half turn" meaning it varies for a half to a full turn.

  • @Hellriderpl *from

  • Heres note accuracy is terrible..

  • Watched this Vid, got psyched to tune up my kit really well (been out of touch last few months) and then BAM! no tuning key in my house... wtf mega rage

  • awesome i did and it works thank you so much man you rock

  • @480drummer I went to a pawn shop today and they had a $30 snare drum, seriously and it was the exact kind I got! lol.

  • @480drummer Hey I can make it into a $1200 snare! I will dip it into silver and make it silver plated then put new wires and new heads, haha!

  • @480drummer Yeah I just picked up an old Tama Rockstar snare at a charity auction where you buy stuff by the cartload and it was burried in the bottom. It was dirty as hell and needed new heads, but it only cost $8 for the whole cart and I got some power tools too, lol.

  • @480drummer Bascially student snares.

  • @480drummer Yes, on craigslist they sell used ones for about $30.

  • Im going to go tune my snare now, I thought it sounded as snappy as i could get it since i dont like deep snares but after watching this my snare sounds like trash

  • Dang i forgot theres an order that your supposed to turn those screws

  • theres 800 dollar snare drums out there????????

  • 1:39 that's not your trick...saw it on Bob Gatzen's videos. "join me in part 2 where I start all over because I fucked up"

  • Dude, you must have cloth ears... the final tuning was worse than when you started...I'm surprised you have the balls to to make a video of your fucked up tuning procedure. ..Ever thought of asking advice from an expert about drum tuning?.. Harmonics trick your ear, so when you think the pitch is lower than it's relative opposite lug...try turning it's opposite lug higher, Yes, I said the opposite lug....It's a counter intuitive phenomenon.. same technique applies to all drums....You're Welcome.

  • Tuning marching snare drums to eachother:

Ohh this is one is to low *1/16th of a turn* SHIT TO HIGH NOW!!!

  • Anyone else hear that tritone when hes hitting the bottom head before tuning it lol?

  • That's a Remo Controlled Sound batter head. The center dot when hit controls the over-ring for a more solid controlled sound. When the head is hit outside the dot, you get more ring which some drummers find desirable. Its like two heads in one. It was designed that way. It provides ring for rim shots and cross sticking.

  • hahahaha! awesome ending

  • Could I also make my 30 dollar snare drum sound like an 800 dollar snare drum?

  • @nusaik He says that in part 2

  • @nusaik

You can get close, You'll never get an amazing sound like a maple or steel snare would give, but if you replace your heads with nice quality heads and tune it correctly it will sound very good.

  • @nusaik I did

  • @nusaik Yes you could.

  • @nusaik i don't think that

  • why is it everytime he says "hear that?" i never hear a difference. :/

  • @maggotcrash666 tone deaf.

  • @maggotcrash666 It really just takes time to be able to hear the difference. If you can start to tune a guitar to itself it helps a lot.

  • @maggotcrash666 Tone deaf.

  • my snare has too much of a ring to it, no matter how you tune it. i wonder how to make my snare stop ringing so much. any advice?

  • @xFreestyleKingx you could use moon gel i bought mine in guitar center and i dont know where to but it it;s good

  • @dennislup yea guitar center is the place to get almost anything. too bad i live over 30 miles from it. fuel always takes away my money almost everytime i go there lol

  • @xFreestyleKingx ghetto solution DUCT TAPE!!

  • i hate tuning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hey, would anyone mind having a quick look at my drum video and give me some advice on tuning?

Got a nice set of drums but they don't sound too nice at the minute :(

    Thanks guys, much appreciated

  • Мишка Михалков мог бы и по-русски рассказать))))))))

  • WHOA! this dudes face is doing a ROD SERLING twilight zone narrator face twitch thing holy shit.*you have just entered"The drum tuning zone" DAaaaa da da da da!

he also has that "Max Headroom twitch too" see Mat Frewer@Maxheadroom 1980's MTV show thing.

  • WHOA! this dudes face is doing a ROD SERLING twilight zone narrator face twitch thing holy shit.*you have just entered"The drum tuning zone" DAaaaa da da da da!

  • I like to go quite tight 2 if u know what i mean

  • I've done just about everything from both parts one and two of this video, And i still have that annoying rattle from my snare, what else can I do do get rid of that? it drives me nuts

  • @flyingmonkeysquad tape a business card about an inch away from the rim, it dampens the ringing sound without killing the tone of the drum

  • @gibelsnbits at the bottom of the snare or top?

  • @gibelsnbits and that will get rid of the buzzing/rattle sound of the snares?

  • I've done just about everything from both parts one and two of this video, And i still have that annoying rattle from my snare, is there anyway to fix that??

  • It's embarrassing because that is what my snare drum sounds like.

  • I have a $350 snare and I would do ANYTHING to have it sound like the untuned version at 0:35

  • how do you get the springs to be tighter so when you hit the drum it sounds alot less denser ?

  • SWAT Snare Wire Arrestor & Tuner Drum Muffler Dampener!

  • Comment removed

  • its more easier if you have the evans torque key ;)

  • lol, I didn't notice that there were two parts, so at the end I was just: WTF? SO I JUST DID THAT FOR NO REASON?

    Drum Noob right here.

  • million dollar snare drum!

  • umm... you cant make a snare drum sound like a million dollar snare drum unless you go to the university. (its a joke, type in million dollar band see what you get)

  • could somebody tell me what resonate means please :)

  • @JoeH757 res·o·nate: Produce or be filled with a deep, full, reverberating sound

  • @JoeH757 How long the sound is !

  • Ok, all fine, when you are in silent room. Hows do you tune your stuff in a room full of noise, like other muscians playing and tuning and seting up gear?

  • lol i thought the end of THIS vid was the end of the entire lesson i was like wtf hahah

"IT DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE BUT I STILL DON'T LIKE IT"

  • Revolutionary new way of dampening your snare, "SWAT Snare Wire Arrestor & Tuner", search "SWAT" in "Musical Instruments" category at eBay.com works great! Check it out!

  • If you keep hitting that reso head like that you will damage it !

tap it with your fingers while your drum is on the floor it works better !

  • rock band (unplugged) with my friends :D

  • you speak too much!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i spent about an hour tuning my snare and thought it sounded pretty good. when he first hit the drum, it sounded exactly like mine. I RAGED MY FUCKING BALLS OFF.

  • @roadsofethiopia oh hope your balls recover man :). I'm not that good at tuning either, but from what I have heard from multiple people is that it just takes practice before you get good at it.

  • @roadsofethiopia no worries man Ive gotten very frustrated with my snare drum too

make sure you tuned it along with the rest of your kit remember that all the drums have to work together

  • @roadsofethiopia hey its not just tunig its also heads

  • Comment removed

  • @roadsofethiopia it's probably because there are easier ways than this video.

  • thanks man, my snare sounds even worse than in the beginning of the vid haha

  • you paid 800 dollars just for the snare

    holy shit

  • @0GobbleGobble0 Well if your a professional it's worth the money.

  • What series of evans snare batter is that?

  • Thank you!!! These two videos were a HUGE help!!!

  • Just get SWAT - Snare Wire Arrestor & Tuner Drum Muffler Dampener at eBay makes your snare a power snare and sound great!

  • thx 4 showing how 2 tune them, had no idea how to do it!!

  • no difference to me

  • when he hits the snare the 1st few times, he looks so disgusted i thought he was going to puke !!

  • Hey why is it that when I play my snare right in the middle, it sounds nice. But when I hit off center it sounds bad and it sounds like it farts/ buzzes any help will be appreciatted : )

  • @TheBlackMonster74 the more you hit far of the center, the more the head generates harmonics, and you have a snare response. That's why sound engineers always say "please, play on the center of the head". Some snare drums are good-natured (if you play with fingers like Simon Phillips, it's difficult to hit the center), but you have to work on it, especially if you play funk. Some use this phenomenon : watch Terri Lyne at the Roy Haynes concert, she has one of the nicest sounds ever heard.

  • how do u tighten the snare wires

  • @cat101ism by the throwoff

  • hey is that a Evans Hazy 300 or 200?

  • 4:57 - Lateralus! lol

  • @ixnxiablefulable hahahaha too right !

  • i hate tuning mydrums, it is the most annoying task of drumming. I have found one way of doing things, which is to place your fist in the middle and tighten untill all the ripples are gone. It gets a good even point to tune onwards from.

  • IT MADE A DIFFERENCE BUT I STLL DNT LIKE ITXDDD

  • This guy really cares about the prices.

  • a long time ago i got the joey jordison signature snare drum from a local music store and what i found out is there is to much ring, everything is okay so i dont need to tune it. what can i do to get rid of the ring?

  • @JoeyJordison12328 have you tryed dampening it lightly?

  • @ISk8Emerica7 recently i got a muffling ring, so its all good lol

  • ha that snare looks exactly like the snare i just bought today

  • Never hit any reso-head with a stick man! Especially the ultra thin snare reso....

  • still sounds like crap

  • I dont get this....So I get that you have to make them all sound the same....but how do you know what its meant to sound like overall?

  • @unisickle : This is where drums get personal and preference plays a large part. To determine your 'overall' sound, you will have to put in a heap of hours trying different combinations until you find one you like. Unfortunately there is no formular for this. Be sure to take the time trying out top head / bottom head combinations, record a hit or two if you can, then make a small variation and record it again. That will help you understand the relationship between the two heads ..

  • i tune the drums for the marching band and our snares suck. i tuned some of them once but it still had a loud ringing sound after i hit. but if i put my hand on top of it, it sounds perfect..any cheap way of making it sound like that all the time without buying anything?

  • @andoi9292 There are E-Rings and Remo Rings, but that takes away the ability to play near the rim of the snare, because you end up hitting the ring. Moongel is another product, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for Marching Band type snares.

  • i like the music at the end and beggining....

  • oh thank you now can tune my teachers snare it sounds awful! lol

  • ive seen a 30$ snare...i own one...was part of my first drumset xD(millenium sets ftw. xD) or maybe 40$ but who cares ...its a piece of crap and it now mainly consists off duct tape^^

  • sounds like ass

  • how offten should i tune them

  • I dont lik this guy,Im sorry,he sounds nasty and sarcastic,$30 snare drum? Nigga you tell me where to find a drum that price cause the cheapest Ive seen are 100 and up

  • @6sic666666 Dude seriously, he meant something like "It sounds like a cheap snaredrum". I haven't seen a $30 snaredrum too, but does it matter? The point is it sounds cheap.

  • @6sic666666 my first set cost 100 and I sold the snare at a yardsale for 10..i probably ripped the guy off cause im pretty sure that it was made of plastic but was somehow supposed to be a legit set....it was a first act...so u can find insane cheap snares but they are sooooo badd

  • @sdeezy8 a plastic snare??? Never heard of them XD

Do you still have your old set? Cause Im trying to buy another set..

  • @6sic666666 i dont really know if it was really plastic but it was terrible..no i dont hav the set...for a total of 20 dollars so u wouldnt want it anyway...

  • @sdeezy8 Well,I do,i'll give you 30 for it,If the bass drum is 20 or 22''

    I have a secret,to make drumsets sound good,And its not tuning,Its something I...Inventented myself :)

  • Goddamn, my snare sounds like the $30 dollar snare, because it is XD Well, not anymore, this video helps so much, ta.

  • we can actually crank it up. A FULL HALF TURN. XD

  • I still think the best sounding snares are John bonhams and Ian Paice`s.

  • ive just started beginning drumming, i dont know if i should leave the wires on the snare??? i play metalcore/deathcore (well thts wht i will play :) )

  • you might watch "Sold Their Souls for Rock and Roll" here on youtube and then reconsider where you want your life to lead.

  • i would, its your sound though, i depens on you! and if you snare isn't in tune, the snares on the bottom won't work like they should so i might be worth it to go to a music store and get it tuned up

  • if you take the snares (wires) off it will sound like a tom... so yes you definitely need them.

  • Thnks for the help, :):):)

  • hahahahahah you just started drumming and your gonna play metalcore/deathcore lol such a douche

  • @billycorganisgod yer i know it sounds faggish, lt me put it this way in like 8 years time id like to be able to play deathcore

  • You mean for tuning purposes? If yes then it is easier to take them off to tune. if just for playing then you need to have the snares the get the snare sound. otherwise its just a tom.

  • hi. i wanna buy a snare drum head and i want that you recommended to me. i want buy a power center head, power center reverse dot or ec2 snare. what you recommended to me...

  • lol still sounds crappy ! grr maybe my band teacher kan help me?

  • 0:44!!

    He sounds pretty angry. ;D

  • @DannyDubstep yah!hahahahaha

  • haha a full half turn

  • Could anyone explain what he means when he is using the drum key and he says "over two?"

I know that you're supposed to rotate the lugs across from one another, but I've never heard anything about an "over two" rule.

  • When he goes across, he picks goes clockwise and skips (1 or 2) tension rods. That's when he says over two (over the rods).

  • @cloroxx123 I think he means, finished two or something like that.

  • Is that a ludwig black beauty snare drum?

  • @pearldrummerbt123 not just a clear ambassador.... be sure it's a snare side head. if you use a standard clear amb on the snare side, you will be running a 10mil head on both sides... that would be a very dead drum. be sure to get a hazy or a black suede standard. a head made specifically for snare side. 3mil thick.

  • It came with a set of Pearl Forum, I believe. It is a Pearl anyways, including the heads. I'm pretty much a starter, and I can't wait until I can get these drums tuned up nice.

  • what note should both heads be at?

  • Why doesn't my bottom head ring out when I listen to it? It lasts like 1/10th of a second.

  • you might have a very deep snare bed, or the head might be way too tight. Or... the head might be stretched or damaged (i.e. pulling out of the hoop).

  • haha, my snare sounds like that first x]

  • mine too =D

  • ya its not that bad

  • I know! I hate the way it sounds and it's a really good snare, it has to be out of tune

  • @majjuus mines too ;DD

  • @majjuus mine 2! Tunning is a pain

  • @majjuus hahaha mines used too!

  • i dont know about you.... but i like that lol

  • $800 for a snare? (feint)

  • i just bought chris adlers snare drum. it rocks

  • what snare is that?

  • @SomeBrioche Orange County Drums and Percussion(OCDP) like Travis Barker uses

  • thats a death metal sounding drum Tuned to B at the start, thats on perpus because its a very powerful sound that u need to get used to.

  • hey can anyone tell me how to replace a stripped drum receptor lug? The part that you screw the tension rods into... 2 of mine are stripped completely out and I know where to buy them but I dont know how to replace them.

  • i dont have a snare drum key

  • You gotta be kidding me!? You use the same drum key you tune your toms and bass drum with... Jeeeesus.....

  • You dont use a hammer when the correct tool is a drumkey, correct me if im wrong

  • Seriously, shamwow's absorb the sound (haha, I made a funny) and the work really good as cheap muffling. Use some on your bass drum and your snare.

  • i have a pillow in the bass

  • me 2

  • @bsumattallica Yeah!!!!1 Me tooo

  • His snare is so ringy its disgusting. Getting the brutal CRACK is pretty simple.

Tune the batter head as tight as your can get it. You shouldn't be able to press the head down very much, if at all.

Tune the bottom head so only the wrinkles are gone. You should be able to press it in about 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch.

Fiddle with your snare wires to personal preference, I like mine really tight. And for christ's sake use muffling! I used to use shamwow's with duct tape, but now i use moongels.
