You just need more practice. If you play the game for long enough, you will eventually discover how to make the character walk. After that, it's clear sailing until you step onto the bridge.

I wish I still had my NES. I had a lot of games. I remember playing Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, Metroid, Deadly Towers, and Anticipation. I had over 70 games, but I don't remember most of them. I remember a lot of NES games being very unique (not always in a good way)

Zanac is a fun game. The different weapons are interesting, and each stage is significantly harder than the previous. There is a rumor that the game becomes harder if you play aggressively.  This leads some people to avoid destroying things unless they really need to. However, I have never been able to confirm that the game adapts to the player's actions with the exception of the boss platforms attacking faster as you destroy other parts of the boss.
