  • One of the most beautiful tribute to an artist to an artist.

  • It's a big surprise to me that this is how Don looks now, so old and overweight. It's as if marriage and raising his kids aged him a lot more than normal. Thankfully, he still sounds pretty good although his light-voiced style is gone.

  • @emofolkie With his asthma, Don may have been taking Prednisone; that will blow the human body up like a balloon.

  • @CounterCultureLives I guess the asthma is why he sounds short of breath when he talks, but he sounds alright when singing.

  • He is so old.. but his voice is still so young. :')

  • @simplybakes We all grow old..... hopefully.... if you haven't yet.... it's coming...... hopefully.

  • What A Beautiful Song!!

  • To a talented wish maker: Thank You & God Bless you always.

  • quite possibly the most beautiful song about the most beautiful man of all time, moving to say the least

  • @leonardjohnny67 I sang a moving rendition of this song in a karaoke bar one night. Yes, the audience was moved!! Quite curiously, as I sang, the audience moved.............. to the nearest exit!! :o(

  • greatest song to hear in 80,s

  • Always Brings Tears To My Eyes.......

  • "They would not listen. They're not listening still. Perhaps they never will."

This is the story of van Gogh: unrecognised as an artist until after his death.

"And when no hope was left in sight on that STARRY STARRY NIGHT. You took your life as lovers often do. But I could have told you Vincent, this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you."

  • this versions sucks, it has no feeling at all.

  • Lost my best mate, his birthday is 17th April, his name is Vincent, guess you know how I feel, Miss you mate... ... God Bless x

  • I wish to share... Thank you Don.

    " Happy Birthday Monsieur Vincent " ( born March 30, 1853 ) And with a Hearty Handshake:)

"It is good to love many things, for therein lies strength, and whosoever loves much performs much, and can accomplish much, and what is done with love is well done."

    — Vincent van Gogh

  • Am I surviving? What can I keep? what can I take?until we meet!"IT" found me again, tears are cold?blood tastes sweet, sweat is hot,Ringing is LOUD in red ,purple,BRIGHT,pain is over there for now,I push IT pulls,I pull IT BREAKS!Broken I stand when I can,I...T DOES NOT OWN ME!I smiled and turned,IT won't show itself,it just likes to BURN ,vessels rippling down my spine,Is IT today? NO,NO WAY! a pill for the chill?a shot when ITS hot?so simple it seems? IT'S not, vague, blind,,IT always stays LIFE

  • i prefer nofx's version :-)

  • feel like a big sook hearing this song with his emotion in his voice.

    Wells me up every time...

  • this song is written in tribute of painter VIncent Van Goh kinda about Van Goh's famous painting Starry Sky

  • It`s too beautiful... when he said ''perhaps they never will'' I hit the table from frustration. lol

  • when it was over I was like "where is the repeat button" beutiful song

  • There just isn't a song that is better than this.

  • BETTER SUFFER FOR YOUR SANNITYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

  • great song,i love it,,

  • I'm impressed that you "jungschnau" are actually looking at his video, not sure Don McLean was ever truly appreciated...My daughter lived in his town and she drove me by his house...I'm still a groupie at the age of...55.

  • You know what would have been awesome? If they had been able to play this song in the 11th Doctor, Doctor Who episode Vincent and the Doctor.

  • So sad

  • So sad

  • This song is so beautiful. However, what is even more beautiful is the exhibit of Van Gogh's painting, "Starry Night," that is currently on display, until January 2011, at the De Young Museum in San Francisco. If you are in the area, and you enjoy this song, please get tickets to see this magnificient painting, as well as other. I was so moved by it, it was incredible. Before I left the museum I went back to see the painting a number of times.

  • Amazing performance so mnay years later. this one proves that a tue artist can last for everr in so many ways.

Ok so it is supported by strings and a bit more retrospective but never mind it is his voice that is still filled with passion....

For those who still love (Vincent... if you udnerstand and I do) the this song captures the heart oif the artist.

Do NOT hold back if this song brings you to tears......

  • No matter the effects on what you see. Close the eyes ... feel his music letting the years that have passed come to you.

  • thanks f posting, time rapper with sync. is not important, forget this, great is lyric in space - great don mc lean, he never comes back

regards to all are here watching and listening

    reinhold3

  • You filmed this live? Wow, must have been a great experience!!!

  • Dang I gotta see him live!

  • Why are Don McLean's lips out of sync with the lyrics & guitar? I love this tune, but this lag in timing is maddening.

  • @Autistic1 It's bad, I know... At the time I posted this there was an issue with youtube skewing the audio and video by 11 30ths of a second once they were uploaded. I would skew my videos prior to uploading to compensate. After about a year, youtube did something that fixed the problem, but all my vids from then are skewed this way. At some point I will re-post this in sync, but just haven't had the time to do so.

  • @goodproblems you shouldn't apologise..thank you for uploading. the audio is very good :)

  • @Autistic1 It happens sometimes. Technology is fickle.

  • @Autistic1 if you notice, from the very beginning... the video is delayed a bit in comparisson to his voice, even when he's talking.

  • @Autistic1 he's old. duh.. and you might not know that he's just doin an out of the box technique. people

  • @Autistic1

iMAGINE UUUUUUUUUUUUU.... SINGERING, AND CHEWING AT THIS AGEEEEEEEEEEEEEE..

    UUUUUUUUUUUU WILL NEED HELPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!

    HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.... UNDESTOOD???

  • @Autistic1 ..

Just close your eyes and open your eyes.......Just beautiful still..

  • @Autistic1 with opening the video twice you can fix the time lagging.

  • I don't like when other folk try to cover this song - only Don can do it. And so well!!

  • Oh my gosh. This is SUCH a nice lullaby.

  • @thisisme0708 a nice lullaby??? a song about an artist's suicide??? Man, I thought I had a warped childhood... LOL

  • @thisisme0708 a nice lullaby??? a song about an artist's suicide??? Man, I thought I had a warped childhood... LOL don't get me wrong, I love the song, but not what i would sing to my son when he was little... (OK, maybe I shouldn't have sung "Broomstick Cowboy" to him, either.

  • @thisisme0708 a nice lullaby??? a song about an artist's suicide??? Man, I thought I had a warped childhood... LOL don't get me wrong, I love the song, but not what i would sing to my son when he was little... (OK, maybe I shouldn't have sung "Broomstick Cowboy" to him, either.)

  • Tank you, I understand well.

  • That's the great song ...

  • i love being able to say that an artist is better live! :)

  • Nice song.

  • Brilliant, touching and precise. He captures Vincent.

  • one of the best songs ever written....the melody is great as well.how i wish music today is still like this..*sigh*

  • Thanks for going to the effort of posting these vids, and the tech stuff, regardless of the skew,it is lovely to see the actual live stuff,I prefer it...as nice as the images can be. Thanks again.

  • Uploader: seriously I would edit out that intro, and start at the beginning of the song. The intro is off topic, and takes away from the beauty of the song. Maybe you can then sync the voice/video at the same time. Anyway, a suggestion and I think it's important because this performance is beautiful and should be preserved properly. thanks. ;)

  • Respond to this video... Absolutely beautiful...perfect.

  • This is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard.

  • This song really is a heart opener. i like it alot feels good to listen! makes you wanna really appreciate all those wonderful people in your life.

  • nice.......:)

  • Don McClean - Vincent (COVER) would you watch my version of it, and rate & comment? i really love this song sooo much!!

  • I had the opportunity or reading a book about Vincent's life, incredible. With this song, I can remember his life and cry in sadness because he was never understood. Love it.

  • the most beautiful song ever...thanks Don

  • I was 15 year old girl when this song came out, was played on the radio a lot. It was my favorite song then, of course I didn't literally connect with the tortured artist thing back then; I was more interested in the torture of fights with my first love, and how the world would come to a screeching halt everytime we had a fight. This song helped me cry somehow. LOL. I'm a bit older now, and the true meaning is different, though not necessarily deeper.

  • @Bombeni I concour

  • Nice voice and wonderful melody! Love it!

  • TY Don just beautiful

  • I would realy want to meet this pernson. He stands for everytihing it is beautyful, and I would want too met with him! Ié known him all my life, and i´m almost 52 years old, and still love him!

  • This video is amazing

  • I know the sound is off but there are some beautiful moments here. What a fantastic song. I got all chocked up at the end. A true perfomer a great songwriter.

  • A real masterpiece on both the musical and lyrical sides. Very beautifully performed here. In terms of contemporary/popular songwriting, I think it is unsurpassed. I only wish he had changed one word--"...as lovers SOMETIMES do..." I don't like the idea of equating, or even associating, suicide with love. It is tragic when it actually happens, as in the song. But thankfully, it isn't a norm.

  • @gregormann7 I think he's talking about the famous suicidal lovers in literature, like Romeo and Juliet or Pyramus and Thisbe (even though the former was based on the latter)/

  • @bibhuna Yeah, I suppose in context you are probably right. I guess I was only talking about the way I usually 'hear' the lyric. It really is a beautifully written piece of popular music. Makes me want to run down to the Institute of Arts! ha

  • Great song, I think he has a chance of this becoming hit! ;-)

  • Oh gosh I LOVE this song. Its one the most beautiful songs ever written.

  • oh, people, just stop complaining. If he would have played only with his guitar, then surely, there would be somebody saying that he could do more, since it's a different time now...

Just appreciate the beautiful, and absolutely divine lyrics and the outstanding music that this man can make! He is a genius and I don't think there are as many similarly extraordinary artists in this world as there are fingers on both hands...

Don McLean, YOU ARE THE BEST! :) <3

  • Awesome!

  • How can a song be written so perfectly.

  • This performance, done this way, is absolutely awesome. It makes me want to kiss his cheek and say, " Thank You" , but with so much adoration from fans I doubt it would mean anything. I have listened to other versions, but this one shows heart and soul in comparison. I listen to it over & over like a young school girl. If it were an old 45 it would be scratched up by now from over use. Hugs from a Midwest lady who loves to hear it.

  • This song is awesome.Really hits me deep

  • Nice version of a Great song. Thanks for posting.

  • Think this a classic that is awesome, quality and you are right, he still has it.

  • To the mofos who give negative feedback to fans on a song they like, please feck off and go find the music you like to listen to rather than posting feedback on music on you don't like.

  • Thank You so very much for posting this.

Even better than the record in my opinion.

I finally found my meaning in this song and it brings tears at times. (Strumming my pain with his fingers.) Smile.

Finding Joy as I keep trying. The artist in my life helps with that.

  • The string is not suitable..they should play scales instead of chordings..Mclean's voice is just so clean and clear..he is always the best~

  • He's still got it.

  • @BLACKMAGICMETALMAN12 He does indeed...!!

  • @BLACKMAGICMETALMAN12 I think, he doesn't have this video already...

  • this first time i really listened to this song, i was in the middle of an isle in Kroger, just down the street from where i once lived in another state. while slowly wandering down an isle in search of something simple and absurd, those words came through the stores ambient sounds meant to add a lovely background texture. i began to cry and then to weap. and as my mind and heart rejoiced in the sadness that was so tenderly related, my body died around me.

  • this song and don mclean never fails to bring tears to my eyes

  • IK hou van dit nummer

  • The video is not lined very well with the sound. but this never changes the fact of excellent title. Great cuts.

  • Immortal song never dies nor fade away.....Thanks for the memories........... Don Mclean.......

  • thankyou Maestro

  • WON-DER-FUL! Thanks for sharing. When was this video recorded?

  • 2005 or so. At the 1865 Sellersville Theatre in Pa.

  • Thanks for the info, pal. ;)

  • Haunting and Sublime.

  • the strings spoil it

  • Ya, I was sitting right next to the keyboard amp... lame I know...

  • @goodproblems you mean you wer at the actual live gig?? if so pretty cool,,,,,

  • @kevynewman ...yes I took this vid, thank u!

  • @goodproblems Cool!

  • @goodproblems must've been great to see him live

  • a little warm, a little sad, a little quiet.... but powerful.

  • It is my personal opinion that at no time should anyone be allowed to make a cover or, god forbid, a remix of his original version. Just my opinion though.

  • Tears....

  • Frances I know what you're Feeling and I share your feelings. Know that you're not alone. But keep in mind that this world can be what we want, the choice is ours. And the "real" people that don't care about money and all this crap are out there, amongst the other people, and if you keep in your heart the true and good intention, you will, soon or later, meet the people that deserve to be met. Regards.

  • very good still waiting

  • Excellent version, unfortunately it would make the top five in a suicide classics compilation.

  • francescoarzilli you are a real person and i feel what you mean peace be with you my friend if you let me call you a friend what a moving song

  • keyboards? sould've used real violins

  • I mean it would be great to receive uninterested help from someone which is not necessarily our father/mother/brother/sister. I mean to be true brothers without bloody link but a kind of brothers in soul.

  • I agree with you Ancestralblue, but I don't think there are so many people who try to understand the true souls of others and not just because of money. I think it's just a problem linked with the lack of sensitiveness and the nowadays world helps the development of egoism and egocentrism. A large part of people (I mean those having a decent life) don't really need help from the others and this is the ruin for the possible growth of feelings like gratitude, brotherhood, Love for the others.

  • Everytime I listen to this song I can't do much than crying. The line where it is said "This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you" reflects exactly what I feel about this world today. No one makes efforts to understand other people's true soul and we all are alone and loveless, I mean true love, that love for the human being that doesn't ask for something back but which is totally free. Great Don you understand the matter !!!

  • Yes Frances...there are people who make the effort to understand to understand the souls of others. But for the ones who don't it's usually all about the distraction presented by the material-money world. Those who learn to look past that see the Spirit of God in the other person's eyes and that creates a bond of feeling that connects them at a very deep level. They see that in other people, in animals and in themselves.

  • I know exactly what you're saying. There are so many things to be said and a simple work of art says it better than any one person will ever do. Art is real. I am so sick of political correctness and all the bs in education. They should teach more about artists and real people that made a difference like Gandhi, Walt Disney, Martin Luther King Jr., John Lennon, etc.

  • Well this is countered by the line: "For they could not love you, still your love was true"

... and you know what the following lines are.

So if you do what you're trying to say... you will end up commit suicide ^^

  • The new world order? Put the pipe down and get some sleep.

  • this song is talking about the new world order.

  • Vincent Van Gough sir. I agree with you about spreading the word. But you lose creditability and thus nobody will listen.

  • this song is so emotional...it's music and lyrics blend together perfectly and can penetrate right to your heart and soul..

  • Incredable sounds even better live!!

  • what is a minus? Do you think that when Don had the song finished he knew it was a big hit? Bet he did. It was constantly on the radio in the mid 70's. Shows you how really good music endures---

  • This is true genius. One of the most gorgeous songs ever written. Kills me every time!

  • oops didn't mean to give you a minus, sorry, I totally agree with you :) Touching every time it is..

  • poorly dubed :/

  • Comment removed

  • Poorly dubed? No, it's the sound that is not synchronized with the video, that's all.

  • Goose bumps...what a story. He is a genius author/poet. Thanks

  • I love this song, and enjoy even more to read the other comments

  • So nice to hear this again. this song gives up hope in *short living*. Don is such a good singer, hope that generations after us love this song too!

  • I could never express the opening this song cuts into my soul. It is impossible for me not to weep when I hear this. Beautiful, emotional and reflective. Yet so much more.

  • Wow, mercy me. Had never seen McClean perform. Excellent, was always awed by the words in the song.

  • great music it's really amazing thank you!

  • weathered faces lined in pain soothed beneath the artists loving hand. Is there a more beautiful lyric ? thanks so much for posting this

  • @bwspyder48 But I could have told you, Vincent, this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you...

  • Comment removed

  • Master songwriter!

  • wonderful melody, lovely voice, PERFECT LYRICS!

  • i hope Don is still alive and live longer. Long live his musics...

  • ive been here a long time and he,s still one the best. thanks goodproblems

  • This is song is just as much a masterpiece as Vincent van Goghs'paintings. Brilliant!

  • One of the greatest lyricists to pick up a pen. What a beautiful soothing voice he has, like an adult lullaby. No one could take tragic moments in history and put them to music quite like Don Mclean.Simply beautiful♥♥♥

  • man i love this song thank u for posting this

  • Thanks for the comment, I hadn't realized that it had switched back... There was time period around the time I posted this that once uploaded, all the vids would skew about 11 30ths of a second off. I started to edit the audio OFF that amount to compensate. I guess Youtube has now caught up. I can fix it, when I get a chance.

  • nice audio lag

  • yes, that synthesizer "player" should be shot.

  • one of the best songs ever

  • his voice makes me shiver.. in a good way :))

  • Senza parole! Don Mclean un mitoooooooooooooo!

  • his backing band...errrr....keyboardist?....is absolutely horrible...

  • sung from the heart... this is gold....

  • it let me fall in old days of 1978

  • this a a great version and his voice is a s good as it ever was i don't know what you are talking about yoouchun

  • Like it:D

  • although this version probably sounds not as good as the original one sang while he was young and had better vocals, but i think it has more emotions and touched me more...
