Anyone ever notice there's no bass part in this song? You've got a a couple guitars playing rhythm guitar, an acoustic and an electric, but there's no bass line.
What I'm talking about is there's no bass line on the track. Listen to it. Do you hear a bass? I sure don't. You do understand that they're just lip synching in this video, don't you? As I recall, this clip is taken from a Top Of The Pops appearance, and to the best my knowledge, nobody performed live on that show during that era. In fact, a big deal was made when Iron Maiden appeared on the show in 1980 and insisted on playing live.
@matrixn21 your joking right? It's ashaim I'm an atheist. I'd like to think your going to hell for blasphemy... Metallica in their hey day couldn't sniff Phil Lynott's coolness...
ahh the good ones die to early!! i remember Phil doing spot appearances in the Top Hat in Dun Laoghaire in the early '70s --man he was great -- he used to do songs with skid row
theyre both good versions but it depends on how heavy u like ur music this is lighter than metallica and thats why some people dont like it i could take it or leave it but thin lizzzy is still a great band!
Fuck metallica they sold out as soon as they came out with the load album, were gonna cut our hair and then were gonna bitch about napster cause 20 million dollars a year just aint enough ha! fuck you metallica, phill rollin in his grave cause you suck so bad and covered his song
Because it's not saying one is better than the other. They both rock and Phil would be honored to know Metallica covered his song.(I believe it was James' idea)
Confession,I owned their 76 and 77 albums, but never got around to this tune-- did not know it existed. I'm a little embarrassed that I found it on tv - Life on Mars. Well, like a hidden gem and very late Christmas present, I am so thankful for the gift of a 3 century old Irish ballad, the soulfulness of this song just vibrates my blood.Just a theory but I think the Irish,Black Americans and Russians create the most soulful music due to the repression they experienced through the centuries
I don't about the Russians, but I know what you mean about Irish folk (having just survived into the modern era), and American Blues & Gospel. But the folk music you're sleeping on is Vietnamese.
Phil Lynott made a wrote new music for an old Irish folk song. He incorporated instruments, not included in the folk tune, and wrote solos as well.
To prove my point - you said it yourself, the cover, 'it's almost exactly the same'. Metallica didn't have to change a thing, they just copied Thin Lizzy's version.
All that Metallica's cover, and the music video, say to me is 'we're washed up and making a plea to the mass music crowd to buy our shit, cause the metal heads aren't down anymore.'
How can metallica or thinlizzy be playing any better they play it in completely different styles if it was the same style you could compare but they arent. I prefer metllica's cause it's faster but it is no greater or no worse than this. Great song
i get your point, but metallica is thrash metal...and its kind of hard to convert a country into a thrash metal song. yes the dubliners are irish hill-billy country band. if nobody beliefs me than just look at the lyrics and it will tell you. but thats the only reason why metallicas version sucks
Even this isnt the original, guys its a traditional Irish song, I couldnt tell you who wrote it, it wasnt the dubliners, its just one of those traditional songs, Thin Lizzy made it classic......fact!
yes but thin lizzy switched the lyrics a little, you know...and not only that, they switched to a point were when you sing this version you would not sound like a irish person. but if you sing the original lyrics you would have kind of a irish voice
Yeah! You rigth. I can say that i liked Thin Lizzy´s more than metallica and no one has freaked out of me. Maybe before metallica recording the song they did believe Thin Lizzy is great. They were child when put this song on radio Thin Lizzy. Greetings.
Why cut short the superb lead guitar section in this track by Eric Bell? I had my Air Guitar tuned and ready to go when! WTF happend there!!! have to find the complete track! reminder to self! check duration of video is longer than 3.49! when I play air guitar to this track I make Slash sound like Pish!
Hey there invisible, I saw them on the support band list for "Slade"in 1972, same tour, I was 12 years old, first real gig.God he was too good to die, I always loved him, suzie Quatro was good, but thin lizzy were way better.Rock on dudes,
Heard Thin Lizzy play this live on the Slade tour way back in early '72. First time I'd heard it: I thought their version of a traditional Irish folk song was fantastic and became a lifelong Lizzy fan from that moment on. Eric Bell was the epitome of cool and I loved his guitar work with the band. Such a bloody pity the TV companies always insisted on editing his f***ing solo on this track!!
As much as I love Metallica, this version is far better than theirs. Eric Bell's guitar work is amazing and Phil Lynott's voice suits the song so well. The definitive version of the song for me.
First of all...both Thin Lizzy's and Metallica's versions are both covers of a song that pretty much no one know when it originated..This is a traditional Irish folk song sang for generations....each has a rendition of the song...no better or worst just different.
SO liking a classic version from an IRISH band, is old fashioned rather than liking an american band ( i think metallica are american) who make this generation (and im pretty sure im around ur age) think its theirs..
I hate artists/bands who do that, they dont respect where the music has come from.. but yes liking this version is oh so gay and old fashioned ach pfft u dont know music!
This is one of the bands that inspired me to learn how to play the guitar....but the 2 Thin Lizzy guitarists who inspired me are not in this 1972 video. Brian Roberston and Scott Gorham are the 2 guys who turned me on to the twin lead guitar concept.....the guitarist in this video is Eric Bell, a very talented guitarist who left Thin Lizzy in 1974. I really like the version of this song that Metallica recorded, but I prefer this version because you can really hear the guitar parts
I think you'll find that band was Wishbone Ash - when Gorham and Robertson were auditioned Phil couldn't make his mind up and chose both of them - he then took on the twin guitar idea that Wishbone Ash had started - it's in his book.

A traditional irish folk song as blues rock. Sweet, simple, perhaps a touch of genius. Put this on in a local bar anywhere, you'll see what I mean.

Thin Lizzy were pioneers (celtic rock, 2 lead guitars) and Metallica paid them hommage - imitation is the highest form of flattery.
Phil Lynott's soulful voice captures the essence and subtlety of the lyrics - Hadfield forgot the lyrics when he sang it in Dublin - enough said.
