  • Sorry to be pedantic, but it was actually 1973.

  • @Feisty1967 Sorry to also be pedantic, but it was No.1 in the Irish charts in 1972. As you say, 1973 in the UK.

  • no bassline??maybe you dont see phil playing bass???

  • @xamtex...Kohntarkosz is correct. We see Phil playing along to the studio recording which has no bass guitar in it.

  • swietny

  • Anyone ever notice there's no bass part in this song? You've got a a couple guitars playing rhythm guitar, an acoustic and an electric, but there's no bass line.

  • @Kohntarkosz lol what are you talking about... as xamtex said yea maybe you missed the bass player...playing his bass...

  • What I'm talking about is there's no bass line on the track. Listen to it. Do you hear a bass? I sure don't. You do understand that they're just lip synching in this video, don't you? As I recall, this clip is taken from a Top Of The Pops appearance, and to the best my knowledge, nobody performed live on that show during that era. In fact, a big deal was made when Iron Maiden appeared on the show in 1980 and insisted on playing live.

  • @Kohntarkosz Really? You mean this clearly recorded sound isn't live...??? Oh fuck eh, I didn't notice....wow omfg

  • @SDCDIABLO We all miss Phil may he R.I.P.

  • @SDCDIABLO We all miss Phil may he R.I.P.

  • Lynott's a legend.

A traditional irish folk song as blues rock. Sweet, simple, perhaps a touch of genius. Put this on in a local bar anywhere, you'll see what I mean.

btw, My Bloody Valentine rock harder and a lot louder than Metallica. Time for bed children. ;oP

  • A rocker singing folk with stunning results..love it!!!

  • @trotter23 seen this live, even better than the disc

  • @matrixn21

Metallica covered this Thin Lizzys version note for note. Give TL some credit.

  • TL is too good :)

  • fu 2

  • @matrixn21 your joking right? It's ashaim I'm an atheist. I'd like to think your going to hell for blasphemy... Metallica in their hey day couldn't sniff Phil Lynott's coolness...

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!

  • The songs great but, best done by the Dubliners!!!!

  • i think i like this better than metallicas version....kinda odd how much metallicas vocals mimic think lizzys

  • Comment removed

  • This record is bloody brilliant!

  • MrBob, When I heard this song for the first time, I thought that it was/is a celtic song... I have a question for you...

Is Whiskey in the jar a celtic song ,or a pub song?

  • @Freyja1133

Its a traditional Irish folk song which is sometimes played in pubs.

  • ahh the good ones die to early!! i remember Phil doing spot appearances in the Top Hat in Dun Laoghaire in the early '70s --man he was great -- he used to do songs with skid row

  • 1972? I thought this great song was released in 1980...

  • WRONG

  • o wow ur such a baddasss. cuz metallica IS the heavist band of all. this song isnt supposed to be heavy dumbass.

  • gaytallica and thin lizzy covered this song but thin lizzy is a better band anyways

  • Yup, by FAR!

  • you cannot really compare them, although i think metallica is better, but just.. their music styles are totally different..

  • Metallica and Napster don't mix. :<

  • Thin Lizzy!!! wooo...

  • theyre both good versions but it depends on how heavy u like ur music this is lighter than metallica and thats why some people dont like it i could take it or leave it but thin lizzzy is still a great band!

  • Fuck metallica they sold out as soon as they came out with the load album, were gonna cut our hair and then were gonna bitch about napster cause 20 million dollars a year just aint enough ha! fuck you metallica, phill rollin in his grave cause you suck so bad and covered his song

  • Aye, ya ain't gonna be beating phill

  • Phil was a poet, beautiful soul.

  • may have been a poet but he didn't write this particular song its ancient, its been public domain for ages

  • are you aware that phil didn't wrote this song right?

  • Yep, it's a very old Irish Traditional song, though the riff at the start is ALL Thin Lizzy!

  • yeesh, the best Thin Lizzy song for sure

  • Better than Metallica

    Normaal1975Rebel

  • MY first and favourite Lizzy Song! RIP Phil!

  • Sláinte !!!

  • Happy St. Patrick's Day!

  • i like thin lizzy's version better than metallica's and i heard metallica's first

  • metallica did a good cover of this song but you cant beat thin lizzys version. <3 ;D

  • Thin Lizzy sings this song with soul and feeling. Metallica just smashes you over the head with it.

  • Ha haa,that's good bro.

Because it's not saying one is better than the other. They both rock and Phil would be honored to know Metallica covered his song.(I believe it was James' idea)

    Lizzy Rules

  • oh my go life on mars, thats funny me too

i heard it when they fought the russians

  • Oh, those Kerry Mountains.......... Up the Kingdom !

  • Confession,I owned their 76 and 77 albums, but never got around to this tune-- did not know it existed. I'm a little embarrassed that I found it on tv - Life on Mars. Well, like a hidden gem and very late Christmas present, I am so thankful for the gift of a 3 century old Irish ballad, the soulfulness of this song just vibrates my blood.Just a theory but I think the Irish,Black Americans and Russians create the most soulful music due to the repression they experienced through the centuries

  • @MFIORE7511,

I don't about the Russians, but I know what you mean about Irish folk (having just survived into the modern era), and American Blues & Gospel. But the folk music you're sleeping on is Vietnamese.

  • this an old irish folk song. thin lizzy just transformed it, and shitty, kliff-free, metallica made a mockery of a great tune

  • Metallica did a great cover of thin lizzy's version. Explain why it sucks? It's almost exactly the same, except a little heavier

  • Comment removed

  • THEY MADE IT INTO A FAST PACE SONG

  • I used to think he said 'theres whisky in the giro'. I have since had therapy and everythings looking rosy. Keep it real.

  • moron this is who made the song.

  • Phil Lynott was the coolest Irish frontman ever. And that lead guitar is liquid gold.

  • where's the guitar solo???

  • I know !

  • There is no other version that can ever sound this good.

Phil you are sorely missed. RIP beautiful.

  • I would really love to hear shane Macgowan sing ths song with this group. Imagine that...

  • Increible versión de este clásico tradicional irlandés

  • tHIS HAS A GUITAR SOLO AND A VERSE OR TWO MISSING.

  • How can metallica or thinlizzy be playing any better they play it in completely different styles if it was the same style you could compare but they arent. I prefer metllica's cause it's faster but it is no greater or no worse than this. Great song

  • i get your point, but metallica is thrash metal...and its kind of hard to convert a country into a thrash metal song. yes the dubliners are irish hill-billy country band. if nobody beliefs me than just look at the lyrics and it will tell you. but thats the only reason why metallicas version sucks

  • but metallica isn't so chillig

  • Even this isnt the original, guys its a traditional Irish song, I couldnt tell you who wrote it, it wasnt the dubliners, its just one of those traditional songs, Thin Lizzy made it classic......fact!

  • yes but thin lizzy switched the lyrics a little, you know...and not only that, they switched to a point were when you sing this version you would not sound like a irish person. but if you sing the original lyrics you would have kind of a irish voice

  • no, metallica sucks

  • can imagine tearing down a dusty highway on a harley with this playing :P

  • thin lizzy!!! they're brilliant!!!

  • R.I.P. Phil Lynott, You are missed.

Thin Lizzy Is a remarkable band and I think that no one has yet topped them, they are in my opinion one of the best bands ever if not the best.

  • I'm sorry but I actually prefer the Metallica version.

I;m more of a metal fan than normal classic rock but i still love both versions

  • i toatally agree with u

  • i dont really like the Metallica version. this version by Thin Lizzy is my favorite

  • Yep, Thin Lizzy's is better. I love Metallica, but this version is raw and from the heart.

  • Metallica only puts effects and sound of this time. This is the reason why we heard different. But i think, this version is the number 1.

  • this is why i love America. I can say that i liked metallica's more than this one and so far no one has freaked out on me.

no wait that is how America works....WHERE AM I!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

  • Yeah! You rigth. I can say that i liked Thin Lizzy´s more than metallica and no one has freaked out of me. Maybe before metallica recording the song they did believe Thin Lizzy is great. They were child when put this song on radio Thin Lizzy. Greetings.

  • nothing beats thr original but metallica's version was good also.

  • Excellent! best version by far, from the fantastic Thin Lizzy!!!

    Love, love, love it!

    Reddirtgirl

  • the best version?

  • I think so.

Maybe, the best, or at least almost. Between Thin Lizzy and The Dubliners is definitely close. Far too close to call.

But I prefer this over Metallica.

  • i absolutely agree

  • Also enjoy Jerry Garcia and David Grisman

  • I love belting this song out on the guitar.

  • U play Guitar??? VERY cool.

  • class song lizzy great best front man ever.

  • still rocks me this

  • Why cut short the superb lead guitar section in this track by Eric Bell? I had my Air Guitar tuned and ready to go when! WTF happend there!!! have to find the complete track! reminder to self! check duration of video is longer than 3.49! when I play air guitar to this track I make Slash sound like Pish!

  • this one is about jus as good as metallicas. i heard of metallicas first though. i think thats much more popular

  • Hey there invisible, I saw them on the support band list for "Slade"in 1972, same tour, I was 12 years old, first real gig.God he was too good to die, I always loved him, suzie Quatro was good, but thin lizzy were way better.Rock on dudes,

  • I love this song. I love how they took a traditional Irish song and made it totally rock out.

  • Heard Thin Lizzy play this live on the Slade tour way back in early '72. First time I'd heard it: I thought their version of a traditional Irish folk song was fantastic and became a lifelong Lizzy fan from that moment on. Eric Bell was the epitome of cool and I loved his guitar work with the band. Such a bloody pity the TV companies always insisted on editing his f***ing solo on this track!!

  • As much as I love Metallica, this version is far better than theirs. Eric Bell's guitar work is amazing and Phil Lynott's voice suits the song so well. The definitive version of the song for me.

  • First of all...both Thin Lizzy's and Metallica's versions are both covers of a song that pretty much no one know when it originated..This is a traditional Irish folk song sang for generations....each has a rendition of the song...no better or worst just different.

  • metallica ruined this song

  • metallica sucks but they did this one pretty good they made a good video for it too

  • This version is 100 times better than that of Metallica's. Thin Lizzy all the way!

  • yes man.....we miss you thin lizzy!!

  • still the best version!!!

  • Metallica version is crap compared to this

  • good music...good times

  • im new to thin lizzy...why is the singer strumming a bass...? i like thin lizzy it just seems kinda weird

  • great voice, are they irish?

  • YES, of course!

  • God, he was so beautiful, inside and out!! had the priviledge to meet him once.. love Jim Fitzpatrick's stuff! Thanks for posting!! xxx

  • fanbloodytastic

  • i think that you're old fashion =D

  • SO liking a classic version from an IRISH band, is old fashioned rather than liking an american band ( i think metallica are american) who make this generation (and im pretty sure im around ur age) think its theirs..

I hate artists/bands who do that, they dont respect where the music has come from.. but yes liking this version is oh so gay and old fashioned ach pfft u dont know music!

  • pwnd!!

  • Das war noch Musik...

  • This song is good:)

  • This is one of the bands that inspired me to learn how to play the guitar....but the 2 Thin Lizzy guitarists who inspired me are not in this 1972 video. Brian Roberston and Scott Gorham are the 2 guys who turned me on to the twin lead guitar concept.....the guitarist in this video is Eric Bell, a very talented guitarist who left Thin Lizzy in 1974. I really like the version of this song that Metallica recorded, but I prefer this version because you can really hear the guitar parts

  • thin lizzy are the business , too bad the guy who up-loaded this video is a cock....

thin lizzy are the business, ive got a 1972 les paul reissue signed by gary moore :)

  • the cock and kery mountains lol. if your calling someone a cock cant you tell us why lol

  • Thin Lizzy were pioneers (celtic rock, 2 lead guitars) and Metallica paid them hommage - imitation is the highest form of flattery.

Phil Lynott's soulful voice captures the essence and subtlety of the lyrics - Hadfield forgot the lyrics when he sang it in Dublin - enough said.

  • the best , i love Thin Lizzy ,that is good band , and becouse the singer is half brazilian , his father was bra.. and me , fuxk cooll

  • @warsisvir, what are you trying to say regarding (half) Brazilian?, I did not get the point though.

Thin Lizzy was / is one of my favourites.

  • himan ,Philip Lynott his father was brasilian , just this man .

  • Who actually plays lead guitar on this? That lovely solo break isn't shown on any of the videos

  • Eric Bell

  • Thin Lizzy introduced the concept of twin lead guitar which means that two guys plays the same loop but in different soloparts (pitch?)

  • I think you'll find that band was Wishbone Ash - when Gorham and Robertson were auditioned Phil couldn't make his mind up and chose both of them - he then took on the twin guitar idea that Wishbone Ash had started - it's in his book.

  • I'm sorry,fair play,metallica r an awesum band,but the original is the best

  • the original is sung by drunken irishmen!!!!

  • The Thin Lizzy version isn't the original either. Its a traditional song.

  • the best
