  • Glad to see we're all mature and DON'T resort to mindless name-calling... Anyway, it is stupid for us NOT to go to a coin dollar system... STUPID is wasting billions of dollars on $1 paper notes that last 18 months....

  • In britain we don't use 1 pound notes, we use coins. The lowest note you an get is a fiver. America is weird.

  • For anybody that thinks that our government is too powerful should pay attention to this. Our government is so weak and stupid that they can't change our currency. This has little to do with public popularity. Every time I go to the store I always got change in bills instead of $1 coins. To just about everybody, money is money. They didn't care if it was coins or bills. All they had to do was take bills out of circulation and replace them with coins. Idiots.

  • @captainspirou read your comment wrong sorry

  • Who cares. A pocket full of coins sucks.

  • @jschultzVII A pocket full of paper is way worse than a pocket full of coins. Fact.

  • @stripe64 lol. You're a faggot. Fact.

  • @jschultzVII Nice retort homophobe. You know what they say about people who are homophobic, right?

  • @stripe64 Nope. I've never given a shit about what "they" say. I'm not calling you gay, i'm calling you a bundle of kindling. Because I hope you die in a fire. Fact.

  • I'm still learning about our government lol shit if it wasn't for the Young Turks I'll give two flying F#(k$ bout whats goin on...with that said, ya I dont know much bout whats goin on but I'm more then willing to help change it =)

  • @chaotic719playa You can't get all of your news from one source. I would definitely expand your horizons beyond that of TYT. They really don't have a full grasp of reality.

  • They should imprint the "United States" emblem with a giant "Vise" squeezing out the money out our pockets, shit by next year, who knows if I can even afford to get on the internet since they wanna shut us down anyways...I wanna head to the moon to make my own government, oh wait, they own that shit too! FTW (F#ck the world)

  • hey, i use those!

  • TYT, you're so ignorant some times. The top-rated comments are absolutely correct. The privately-owned 'Federal' Reserve is stealing from the people via the government. The establishment of the Fed in 1913 and the final abolition of the gold standard in 1971 were two of the greatest tragedies in US history.

  • @SkullOfYorick "The privately-owned 'Federal' Reserve is stealing from the people via the government. The establishment of the Fed in 1913 and the final abolition of the gold standard in 1971 were two of the greatest tragedies in US history."

This story has nothing to do with the either the Federal Reserve or the gold standard.

  • @WG55 "This story has nothing to do with the either the Federal Reserve or the gold standard."

Yes it does, if you can't make the connection, you probably shouldn't be using the Internets.

  • I call for suspending penny minting. In this day and age, pennies are nothing but an inconvenience to everyone. If my sources are right, it takes 2¢ to mint one penny.

If a part of the national budget must be cut, well...

  • @seanmatthewrosen Military. Also, it costs $0.12 to make a $100. I'd say we make up the cost of minting cents and nickels LIKE CRAZY.

  • Hell yeah... reduce the value of the dollar even further!

  • They'll put Obama on ALL the money probably...

  • 1.4 billuon dollars??? Spend it on education, you fucking retards. I am sure it will be going to aid the enemies so they can fight Americsns so we can have another decade of war ....

  • @A7S8A6D "1.4 billuon dollars??? Spend it on education, you fucking retards."

They have a stock of 1.4 billion COINS, not a $1.4 billion surplus to the program. The money saved from stopping the minting of presidential coins is $50 million.

  • Terrible call, coins work awesome, it was a bit of sanity when I saw some dollar coin operated things in vegas when I came to the states. Cmon america, stay civilized, only primitives use dollar bills.

  • meh i just used like 20 1 dollar coins for snacks

  • Grover Cleveland is Ron Paul's favorite president

  • wait... does that include the Sacagawea dollar?

  • send them over here to ecuador, we looove those coins

  • Wait biden

  • Lol, O so that's why he sounds like a latino woman XD

  • or print money on hemp

  • Its even worse than that Cenk. For every 4 coins made, 1 Sacajawea coin had to be minted. So not only were the Pres. coins overminted, they had to overmint Sacajawea coins too. As you would say, disaster.

  • I never even knew $1 coins existed before i watched this video.

  • YOU DON'T KNOW THAT MAN!

  • Chester A Author was mentioned on Die hard with Avengeance

  • TYT. Your wrong, it's a horrible call. These coins are interest free money, that fat cat Fed Reserve does not like. That's why banks are ordered to decirculate these coins when they receive them. Check out Money Masters by Bill Still.

  • @longenecker79 Um, all money is interest free right now.

  • @greg55666 Federal Reserve lends money to banks and banks lend money to everyone else at 4-6% interest. All new money (paper notes backed by the Federal Reserve) that enters our economy is borrowed into existence. It is a debt born at birth of its circulation. Sure the federalreserve.gov has current borrowing rates set at 0%–0.25%. The Federal Reserve is a corporation that is chaired by bankers. Bankers lending bankers money at zero percent isn’t a gift to us citizens. Sad facts!

  • @longenecker79 It's "YOU'RE" wrong, you fucking moron

  • @longenecker79 Yep. Also, the cost of production may be more, but in the long run, the cost of the $1 coin is waaaay cheaper than $1 bill. $1 bills don't last very long, coins last forever.

Just another example of how ignorant TYT are.

  • Racism is prejudice plus power.

  • Hahaha, which news story is the "you don't know that man" sample from? Its come up alot in your more recent stories. Nice one!

  • NOT FAIR! I want my Obama coin.

  • Sorry Cenk, this is actually a terrible call. What they SHOULD have done was simply stopped printing $1 paper bills and forced the coins on to the public ... and ditched the penny. If congress was serious about fixing the budget this would be beyond common sense. I love the coins and am really upset that they are getting rid of them.

  • @Bitthebeast exactly how would it help fix our budget?

  • @mike414993 Paper bills have to be reprinted every 5 years or so, while coins have a circulation life near 50 years.

  • @Bitthebeast ok but like paper money it matters how much value people put into money and people have a tendency to put more into paper money then coined money so it wouldn't be that easy for everyone to adjust to just coin money

  • @Bitthebeast I'm sure I would have loved the coins...if I ever saw them in circulation...

  • @Bitthebeast That doesn't fix the budget as much as it encourages inflation.

And for some reason people love quarters, so they'd just use four quarters. After all, no one uses the goddamn half dollar.

  • @Bitthebeast So without the penny what do you think should represent one cent? Or do you think there are too many pennies circulating? No hate just curious

  • @Bitthebeast hmmm ditched the penny are you that stupid that means they would have to completely change the whole price system what if you get 11.22 in change start making 2 3 4 6 7 8 9 coins that will fix the problem surely make triple the coins just to fix that ONE problem what if you get 1 dollar in change give you change in which NO ONE WANTS

  • @Bitthebeast what if you have 1000 dollars and want to buy something dumb a shit load o quarters on the cashiers desk and have them count it?

  • LIFE ISN'T A BLINKING CONTEST BIDEN!!!!!

  • Dollars coins are given as change at LA Metro stations when buying tickets. They're going to have to redo the machines to give back dollar bills.

  • The dollar coins look too much like quarters. I hate having them for fear I'll put one in a machine. Also, most of the machines you use coins for don't take them.

  • Silly American's and their hate for dollar coins. Paper dollars suck and get ripped and torn all the time. I enjoy the one dollar and two dollar coins that we have here in Canada. Canada is also getting rid of paper bill and is introducing bills made out of plastic. They cost twice as much to make but they last 4 times as long as paper bills.

  • @Chaoitcme We have had plastic notes here in Australia since the early to mid 90s, believe me they are much better best of all you can accidentally leave them in the washing machine and they will be still good!

  • @SprattyD Canada just released the first plastic 100 dollar bill. Eventually all the bills will be plastic over the next year or so I believe. Silly American's think that their money is so great. The truth is that coins last longer than bills. The plastic bills are great as well. American's should use more coins and eventually change their bills to plastic. I doubt that will ever happen though.

  • @Chaoitcme Why you're cool because Canada is at a next trend in money. "Silly American's" Money is money regardless... It quickly becomes devalued when nobody gives a fuck.

  • @okonomiyaki51 I said silly American's because they are losing money by still using dollar bills. I moved to Canada about 8 years ago and at first I hated the coins. But after awhile I realized that they are a lot easier to use than dollar bills. The bill should still be used but the smallest amount should be 5 dollars. Canada is now making their bills out of plastic that last 4 times longer. Other countries have been using plastic bills for awhile now. They save money.

  • @Chaoitcme If the smallest bill is $5 and the smallest coin is $0.05, what's the difference from the smallest bill being $1 and the smallest coin being $0.01? Just means prices are higher. $500 for a TV instead of $100.

  • @TTEchidna Guess you never moved from a small city like I did huh...I moved from a not so big town all the way to San Diego. Dam, the money I made there was twice as much as when I lived back in Colorado, BUT when I had a job in SD I did make alot, then again the price of living was higher so it equaled out...0.05 still had the same price just seemed more at the time but same as if I lived back in CO, thing is we need a better economy to uprise the shiny (not worth shit) penny these days!

  • @chaotic719playa I've always lived in the Chicago area, so I'm pretty used to the big city. And while cents are "worthless", nickels become the same way once cents are demonetized - they're then the lowest denomination coin, you can't get anything lower, and while we actually use our dime so we don't have to get so many nickels in change, it never stopped us from pretending the $2 bill doesn't exist and getting 4 ones when we get $9 in change.

  • @TTEchidna I'm rubbing my two nickels together now we speak and I'll be dammed if its enough to even pay attention anymore these days lol Happy Holidays!

  • @Chaoitcme $5 being the lowest bill makes no sense. It's just that the money's worthless so the $1 denomination becomes like making a 25¢ bill. Solution is not to eliminate lower denominations, converting lowest bills into coin format like Canada, Australia, and Europe did, it's to stop the goddamn inflation that's been growing out of control since Nixon.

  • @okonomiyaki51 And therein in the problem. No one gives a fuck about the cent, therefore it's becoming "worthless", leading to a lower-value dollar. Once the nickel's the lowest-value coin, no one'll want those either - it'll become "ah you can keep the nickel" instead of "ah you can keep the penny". Further decrease. Eventually it becomes "ah you can keep the dollar", and a bottle of pop costs $100.

  • @Chaoitcme We use four of our six coins and six of our seven bills. I agree we need to make more use of the half and dollar coins, but still, it's an even amount. All coins $1 and below, all bills $1 and above - it just makes sense to divide at the decimal line.

  • @SprattyD I like the idea of plastic bills. Paper money is filthy. At least we could sterilize plastic money with hot water and soap every now and then!

  • @jdh501 It's why I use $2's. No one touches them, so I get brand-new ones.

  • This just proves how bad the money situation is.

Also I always remember that Chester A. Arthur was 21st POTUS because of Die Hard With Vengeance :)

  • Grover Cleveland was the best US president. Vetoed more bills than anybody else.

  • GRESHAM'S LAW.

  • I know of Chester A. Arthur and i'm British. He was referenced on How I Met Your Mother though :p

  • LOVE the sound byte at 1:29, haven't heard it on the show for about 13 months!

  • When did the government ever stop worrying about wasting taxpayers money?

  • @Dwicker64 Only when it's a PR stunt, and not actual saving money.

  • American coins are free money, they are not debt based, they are issued by the mint instead of the fed.

  • The US mint would actually save money if the $1 bill were eliminated in favour of the $1 coin because on average the bills circulate for the least amount of time because they become tatty and drop to bits. In the UK we have £1 and £2 coins. There are loads of coins knocking about from as early as 1978 in general circulation.

  • You don't know that man!!!

You don't know me, and I don't know you!!

  • John McClane would have figured out the bomb riddle faster in Die Hard 3 with the Chester A. Arthur coin...

  • The Unemployed Philosophers Guild sells a finger puppet collection of Forgotten PResidents: Chester A. Arthur, Gerald Ford, Millard Fillmore, and Martin Van Buren.

  • On behalf of helping the Government and the American People, I will personally take those 1.4 Billion Excess coins, Contact me Biden.

  • ease up on the make up ana.

  • Anna that's her name right? get's prettier every episode

  • We have $1 and $2 coins in Canada. How do you guys plug parking meters? Carry a bag of quarters? Our $5 is going soon. The USA should get on the metric system but I guess with the state of education down there it would take until 2076 for you to figure it out. Would be a good idea and timing with your country rebuilding. A job creator.

  • @CATSASS1117

Quarters are used for parking meters.

  • @ACluelessKid You have a keen grasp of the obvious. I carry 2 coins for a $4 meter and you carry 16 quarters. Brilliant.

  • You dont know that man!

  • You haven't seen our local titty bar. Those girls should be glad people stuff $1 bills in their panties and not nickels. *shudders*

  • Yeah, that was kinda what I was thinking as an alternative to stuffing bills in their g-string. It already looks like a coin slot, I mean come on.

  • GOLD!

No, I mean the story is gold, I'm not a Ron Paulite. Don't yell at me. Soundboard FTW

  • Hell, I'd enjoy a Chester A. Arthur coin. Use em too.

  • Pro tip: stop printing the $1 bill and favour the coin, also stop printing the penny. Tadaaaah money saved all around.

  • STOP PRINTING 1 DOLLAR BILLS.The 1 $ coin is good. We waste a lot of money on the short term use of paper. A 1 $ bill lasts only 18 months before needing to be reprinted again. A 1$ coin lasts at least 30 years or more. Stop making pennies. Australia has already did this...

  • @movieguystarraisin We're cycling out the 5c coin as I understand it, and you guys are still using 1c coins! The fuck?

  • @movieguystarraisin woohoo! i'm living in australia now...i was wondering why they don't have a $1 note, and this makes perfect sense

  • @movieguystarraisin I know, I can't believe Cenk isn't aware of this! I watched this video to hear him go off on how stupid the government is for still printing dollar bills. They always say "people don't use them"--I know how to get people to use them: stop making dollar bills!

Don't stop making pennies. If you stop making pennies, corps will just round everything up. It's an instant 5% tax hike.

  • @movieguystarraisin The real solution is to revalue the currency. Starting coins at $0.05 and starting bills at $5 is the same as starting coins at $0.01 and starting bills at $1 - the only difference is that the money's actually worth something.

The real solution to keeping the dollar bill around longer is to not use it so much. Give a $5 for a $2 thing, you get three one-dollar bills back most often. A better way is to use $2's to supplement the $1's.

  • Wow America. You have to be the most wasteful country there is. 2 $1 denomonations? Phase out the $1 bill. Everywhere else has $1 coins. The only coin to phase out is the penny

  • Comment removed

  • Theres only one reason the US still produces $1.00 bills instead of coins. Strippers.

  • @hash1212121212 Hells yeah! Can you imagine how much harder it would be to have a stripper pull a coin out of your mouth with her tits? And how are you going to stuff a coin in her g-string, never mind, I thought of one way, but I don't think those sweet, beautiful strippers would like it too much. Come on people!

  • @senortonyful ...but they can squat pick up a coin with their clam.

  • @senortonyful

Why not stuff $5 bills in their strings?

  • @Tounushi provide a worthy stripper.

  • @Tounushi Because the girls don't work THAT hard for the money. $1 bills will suffice.

  • @senortonyful Maybe they should patent "stripper bills". The strippers could then exchange those for real money at a bank or something.

  • @Ericthebearjew1 Brilliant man! We're gonna be rich!

  • Kill the pennies and the $1 bills, and get $1 coins into general use!

One cent coins cost more to manufacture than they are nominally worth (which isn't much shit to begin with) and $1 coins last a whole lot longer in circulation than $1 bills (again, savings in manufacture and materials).

  • I never saw any business or anyone exchanging dollar coins, so how am I suppose to use them?

  • I guess in the U.S the dollar coin is a bit superfluous, you already have a dollar bill, so all your coins are small change, unlike in Australia where we have 1 & 2 dollar coins.

  • Anyone know where the "You don't know know that man!" sound clip is from?

  • Keep the dollar coins and stop making pennies!

  • @Clecokeebz Britain's "Monster Raving Loony Party" put that idea into their manifesto as a joke, but kept it in because the public loved it so much.

Their idea of connecting hamster wheels to the national grid didn't go down so well.

  • The people haven't liked them for decades, but that hasn't mattered to the decision-makers.

  • I think they should have dropped the note instead, would have saved a lot of money.

  • dollar coins always FAIL ... when will the mint learn this?

  • @eahazell They work in Canada. But you need to drop the $1 bill at the same time.

  • @eahazell

Dollar bills are a bigger fail.

A coin lasts at least five times longer in circulation than a bill does and coins are far more resistant to abuse. That way the total manufacturing costs of $1 units are lower with coins than with bills.

US is the only country that produces bills worth a single unit of national currency. That might've worked during the gold standard, but not today.

And why are $1 coins a fail in your opinion? Too lazy to carry a few coins?

  • @eahazell

They wouldn't fail (for some odd reason they fail only /IN AMERICA/) if $1 bills were phased out. And how could you mix bucks and quarters? The dollar coins that are in circulation are gold in color. Quarters are silver/steel.

The reason nobody uses dollar coins is because they're using $1 bills. That is the ONLY obstacle in the way of widespread use of $1 or even $2 coins.

Without going into economic arguments about the euro, you cannot deny that 1€ and 2€ coins work.

  • @Tounushi but teh clip in question targeted US coins. And your point is valid. Until the paper bill goes or at least gets reduced it will continue to fail. The first few (Carter Quarter) were similar in size and colour. The rest have been close in size and until they get used to looking for them...the will feel quarter and stack it between real quarters. I didn't say we are all smart..but I live here..I see the stupid daily and it hurts

  • @eahazell

"I see the stupid daily and it hurts"

Awesome. May I quote you on that? :)

  • @Tounushi please do

  • Bummer on the Grover Cleveland coins; he's my distant cousin* as my mother was a Cleveland, and I wanted to add him to my collection.

    *Third Cousin Six Times Removed

  • @jtgus nuccah polease

  • The US government is always losing money when creating money....

  • Cenk... What is up with that gash on your forehead? It wasn't there before...WTF??

  • @zenguin13 He actually has always had that. Maybe it's the lighting or something in this one, because it is more noticeable here.

  • They won't stop printing $1 bills, because the "dollar bill slot in the soda machine" lobby won't allow it.

  • Chester A Arthur?!?!? He was the 21st President of the United States of America!!!!

I know this because I have seen Die Hard 3

  • Shoulda done what Canada did, get RID of the 1 dollar bills. Don't leave both in circulation. Nobody likes coins, why would they use them given the option. Gotta force people to use em. Why? Because they are cheaper in the long run. they last longer than bills, so no need to reclaim, destroy, reprint as much.

  • I have dollar coins and they suck because i cant use them at vending machines at school or people wont accept them

  • Americans are addicted to symbolism

  • Here is a hint or the US mint. When you start making $1 coins STOP printing $1 bills.

  • @colmeweb That would mean the US actually had to know something about economics >:3

  • all they're good for is coin slots at theme parks.

  • I'm fairly interested in US history and read a lot about it and I can honestly say I know little of those 3 presidents except for their names.

  • Eisenhower dollar coins are the shit! Screw the Susan B. Anthony and the Sakeaguea ones. I want my Eisenhower dollar coins, goddammit!

  • You can`t use coins in the US because most people will refuse them, either out of fear of being worthless or by ignorance. I have no idea why you guys are so attached to your bills but up here we have had 1 and 2$ coins for some time and it isnt the end of the world.

  • why dont they just ban pennies, they just annoy the fuck out of everyone

  • I had no Idea these coins even existed!

rep John Edward Sununu (republican) introduced the bill to make these coins, which was passed in 2005.

All this bullshit talk of spending, and deficit, but this is the SHIT republicans supported? The country was IN DEBT when this bill passed!

    OCCUPY!

  • Funny, I actually just found out today that they even MADE these.. and now they are discontinuing them lol

  • I didn't even know you guys had $1 coins in America. In Australia we have $1 and $2 coins but our smallest bill is $5. I just wish we had $1 bills here... Coins are fucking heavy and inconvenient when they mass up.

  • i have a couple of those coins, refused to use them just cos i thought they also looked kinda cool

  • They need to just stop making dollars bills and force people to use dollar coins. Better for everyone and saves the government billions of dollars. A completely simple and straight forward way to better the country and no one will do it. Stupid America.

  • @PaddyCollector How exactly would that better the country in your eyes?

  • @SaintFookinJimmy If the government saved money and was run more efficiently and logically wouldn't that make the country better? If we stopped clinging to outdated ideas and ways of doing things?

  • @PaddyCollector How is using bills outdated? Coins are what were used in medieval times. Bills are nearly weightless and take up hardly any space. Coins are heavy, occupy more space and when if you have alot, say $10+ in gold coins, it's really inconvenient to have to carry them around. In my country our smallest bill is $5 so we're always carrying around $1 and $2 coins. It's really annoying.

  • @SaintFookinJimmy Bills cost much more to make and don't last as long as coins. In the U.S. a dollar hardly buys anything. One can hardly even buy a soda for a buck. And with the wide use of debit and credit cards they are even more obsolete. It is an easy way to save billions of dollars by just eliminating one dollar bills. The mint has eliminated many monies before. They got rid of the half penny, gold/silver, the thousand dollar bill and higher units too.

  • @PaddyCollector Technically, we should save money by eliminating anything under the $100. It's all anyone uses anymore - we can just round up.

  • i have never seen a $1 coin in my life.

  • what are opennies even for!

Oh.....when they your change is $1.34 they just would DIE!!!!!!!!!

if they had to give you a nickel instead of 4 pennies (-______-)

  • I think $1 coins are cool

  • what's that soundclip that says" you dont know me and i dont know you" from?

  • The US Mint will continually print out coins of President Sarah Palin!

  • jeez I can hardly hear and my volume is at max!!

  • I love dollar coins, this is a bad call of the government and bad taste of the people
